Why hasn't any artist been able to match Mariah's "All I Want For Christmas Is You"?

Because they are infinitely better than Mariah Carey Christmas songs?

Stay on topic if you can peeps. Even though none of the songs that were posted randomly in this thread hold a candle to the christmas standard that is AIWFCIY, the topic at hand is why haven't any artists since the song was released in '94 not come out with their own original commercially successful and catchy holiday song?

It's seen as one of the most iconic critically acclaimed Christmas songs of all time

Not in my house, or from anything I remember.

I don't see why people like the song. I also don't get you PopGAF, I really don't. This song is average at best, so many better christmas songs out there.

EDIT: The best christmas album ever is this. No comp. Classic christmas songs are still better on their own though.

You give her too much praise, she wrote a song that sounds like it was made before because she used the "it's Christmas time and I want to be around / miss my ....." theme

Last Christmas
Please come home for Christmas
Blue Christmas
I'll be home for Christmas

I mean whatever, you're a big fan of her so it's almost like you're fishing for an argument

No it's fine! I know you're just trying to play devil's advocate (heh). No arguments here from my end. :D I agree that the spirit of the song was taken from previous old classics which in turn helps it stay relevant every year.

My question is: Why hasn't any recording artist been able to successfully create an original successful holiday song since it's iconic debut 20+ years ago?

I remember when "All I Want for Christmas is You" came out, people were amazed that a "modern" song managed to break into the tight-knit group of classics.

People were trying before. People have been trying since. It's a very hard group to break into, and I imagine that each new entry leaves less room for someone else to get in, and every failed attempt leaves people that much less willing to even listen to an attempt.

Just had to check out some of Mariah Carey's vocal range videos on the related videos tab.

My god. No-one even comes close, do they.

Well, there's Georgia Brown.

I'm very sorry.

A decent overview of this song showed up last year on Slate (remember when they mattered?):

I was going to post this! I'm glad I read the topic first; I'm surprised someone else remembered it.

Mariah's cover is better, though.

And Whitney's best Christmas song performance is Do You Hear What I Hear?. I don't know that she has an original song, but I love that performance.

Where Are You, Christmas? came close IMO. But I don't think anything has ever matched it. And it's not like artists aren't trying every year, but there's just nothing that screams a hit. Last attempt I think was Idina's original tracks on her Christmas album last year along with Ariana's. Of all the artists to try, I'm surprised Buble hasn't had something become a huge hit.

I think Fairytale of New York might be a better song, but All I Want for Christmas Is You is a better Christmas song, if that makes sense -- instantly makes me feel like "Fuck yeah, it's Christmas!"
Yeah. Fairytale of New York is good, but does not make me think Christmas.

It's also older (1987 vs 1991), so it doesn't count anyhow.

You've already had 3-4 of us bringing up The Darkness' song from 2003. No.2 in the charts in the UK, exact same placement as Mariah Carey, based on sales and not radio-play. It happened, question answered.

The UK is not the world though, and that song gets little airtime anywhere else, compared to Mariah's AIWFCIY.
(This is not a judgement on the quality of both songs, since I prefer The Darkness' one easily)

Is this a thing? I don't hear the song much and it's really not that good imo. It's just like those Nsync Christmas pop albums, overproduced and not very Christmas-y feeling

And a lot of the argument here seems to be U.S.-centric in regards to the "well-known" Christmas songs apparently being from the 1950s, which is also not the world.

It's just two close-but-different Christmas cultures colliding with each other. We had another big Christmas song, we moved on. If the OP is taking a purely U.S.-focused view on things, they're going to keep on being frustrated at not having a "suitable" answer.

(Not a pop at you, if any of it seems that way)

"Baby, Please Come Home" is the once and future champion of all Christmas songs. Mariah gave it a pretty good try though.

Mariah's version of 'Where are you Christmas?' that she co-wrote, would've been a classic for her too if she was able to keep it.

This song is one of the reasons I now hate christmas. Thank you OP, for helping me mentally prepare for the biggest 2 months of over saturated bullshit mankind has never known.

Fuck christmas, especially the god damned music.

a lot of what she's saying seems like a stretch, but "Baby It's Cold Outside" is preeeetty rapey

IMO, there's one legit "rapey" line in the song (the what's in this drink line). Everything else? I'd make the argument that the song is more about slut-shaming than it is outright coercion/force. When I read the lyrics, it seems like she actually wants to stay, and the only reason she doesn't is because of what she thinks everyone else will think.

It's really kind of sad that we can't get new timeless Christmas songs.

I feel like as I'm getting older the old idea of Christmas, the cozy, around the tree kind of Christmas is just being killed. I'm not blaming anything, except maybe people just kind of getting bored or forgetting some of the smaller traditions and it becoming all about eating, then opening gifts, then people leave and mingle. The slower paced Christmas from my youth, but especially my parents, is kind of dying.

Fairytale of New York will always be the best Christmas song.

"This".

Is Mariah Carey the only one-hit wonder to have a Christmas song as her hit

Ummm,

http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/957957/2020-vision-mariah-marks-milestone

Carey's debut single, "Vision of Love," entered the Billboard Hot 100, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Adult Contemporary in the issue dated June 2, 1990. The song would become her first of 18 Hot 100 No. 1s, the most among solo artists in the chart's 52-year history. Among all acts, only the Beatles, with 20, have more No. 1s.

Because the classics are always the best. The awesome part about Christmas music is it's always the GOATs like Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin and whoever else singing the same/similar stuff. And it doesn't really get boring cause we only listen to it like a month out of the year, and it's really good.

What I'm saying is, the same Christmas music is such a mainstay that popular artists would rather just play it same and do the same stuff.

I have a certain fondness for:

Miss You Most

Oh!
In the springtime
Those memories start to fade
With the April rain
Through the summer days
'Til autumn's leaves are gone
I get by without you
'Til the snow begins to fall
And then
I MISS YOU
