Because they are infinitely better than Mariah Carey Christmas songs?
Because they are infinitely better than Mariah Carey Christmas songs?
This is probably the 2nd best Christmas song.
i mean, look at them.
That's Christmas in one picture.
It's seen as one of the most iconic critically acclaimed Christmas songs of all time
Stay on topic if you can peeps. Even though none of the songs that were posted randomly in this thread hold a candle to the christmas standard that is AIWFCIY, the topic at hand is why haven't any artists since the song was released in '94 not come out with their own original commercially successful and catchy holiday song?
You give her too much praise, she wrote a song that sounds like it was made before because she used the "it's Christmas time and I want to be around / miss my ....." themeStay on topic if you can peeps. I mean whatever, you're a big fan of her so it's almost like you're fishing for an argument
My question is: Why hasn't any recording artist been able to successfully create an original successful holiday song since it's iconic debut 20+ years ago?
Just had to check out some of Mariah Carey's vocal range videos on the related videos tab.
My god. No-one even comes close, do they.
A decent overview of this song showed up last year on Slate (remember when they mattered?):
I think Fairytale of New York might be a better song, but All I Want for Christmas Is You is a better Christmas song, if that makes sense -- instantly makes me feel like "Fuck yeah, it's Christmas!"Fairytale of New York will always be the best Christmas song.
Yeah. Fairytale of New York is good, but does not make me think Christmas.I think Fairytale of New York might be a better song, but All I Want for Christmas Is You is a better Christmas song, if that makes sense -- instantly makes me feel like "Fuck yeah, it's Christmas!"

You've already had 3-4 of us bringing up The Darkness' song from 2003. No.2 in the charts in the UK, exact same placement as Mariah Carey, based on sales and not radio-play. It happened, question answered.
possibly the second best Christmas song ever
Christmas is about cheese and these two amped it up to the max
Madonna, Britney, Christina, J Lo, Ariana Grande, Leona Lewis, Michael Buble, Jessica Simpson, Kelly Clarkson (and the list goes on...and on) have released Christmas albums
The UK is not the world though, and that song gets little airtime anywhere else, compared to Mariah's AIWFCIY.
(This is not a judgement on the quality of both songs, since I prefer The Darkness' one easily)
Where Are You, Christmas? came close IMO. But I don't think anything has ever matched it. And it's not like artists aren't trying every year, but there's just nothing that screams a hit. Last attempt I think was Idina's original tracks on her Christmas album last year along with Ariana's. Of all the artists to try, I'm surprised Buble hasn't had something become a huge hit.
Madonna released a very popular version of Santa Baby in the 80s, didn't she?err, what???
a lot of what she's saying seems like a stretch, but "Baby It's Cold Outside" is preeeetty rapey
Fairytale of New York will always be the best Christmas song.
Is Mariah Carey the only one-hit wonder to have a Christmas song as her hit
Is Mariah Carey the only one-hit wonder to have a Christmas song as her hit
Carey's debut single, "Vision of Love," entered the Billboard Hot 100, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Adult Contemporary in the issue dated June 2, 1990. The song would become her first of 18 Hot 100 No. 1s, the most among solo artists in the chart's 52-year history. Among all acts, only the Beatles, with 20, have more No. 1s.
Yuuuuuuuuuup!
because they can't surpass her talent.
