Why hasn't any artist been able to match Mariah's "All I Want For Christmas Is You"?

That's a low-blow, shame on you.

She redeemed herself that same month

When it's Christmas time I only listen to the classics
I don't mess with anything from the 90's forward

Frank Sinatra
Dean Martin
The Bing

Those are the classics that remind me of the spirit of Christmas

Pop song "all I want for Christmas is a hit record" sounds way too commercial to me

Are you going to engage with her argument at all?

What exactly is there to argue? It is a christmas love song. A girl is in love with a guy, why should she want family time when she wants her man? And if a man sings the song, suddenly it's a stalker song - so it's only a stalker song if a man sings it? Are you fucking kidding me?

When you have an agenda, your logic skews in a certain direction.
For some everything is black and white, no grey.

That songs just says that the singer wants their loved one in their life for x-mas.
There is nothing wrong with that, a lot of people that celebrate x-mas want that.
Some people interpret it as their significant other, others see it as family/friends.
Others see it as sexism against women.

I don't really see the problem with that. I can see it as a love song, but Sarkeesian, who's really focused on feminism, hears a different message. I don't really hear anything in the music or lyrics that contradicts her interpretation, and it's a matter of opinion, which I think she's entitled to.

This is taking it so far though, it's ridiculous.

I mean, no1 in her list is definitely sexist, as many songs from that decade. But twisting everything into a sexist agenda is gross. No, I don't want a fucking Buffy Scythe, I want a man (or a woman), what the fuck is your problem?

I'm not seeing anything about this that's worth getting upset about.

Seems the lyrics are very open,
since they can be interpreted as a persons kids, significant other, etc...
Probably the reason it resonates with many as a x-mas classic.

The most sexist part of that segment was saying if a guy sings it, it's bordering on stalker.

Bolded. How is that statement ok? What if I say that if a guy sings it, it probably means he wants to dedicate his life to a woman, but if a girl sings it, she is a probably a dangerous psycopath? Because we know that's how it works. How normal does that sound?

No need to get riled up, it's only a persons opinion.
Only problem is that many see her opinions as infallible.

In reality, she says a lot of good things,
but no one is perfect, and people should never see things as black and white.
That usually only divides us, instead of bringing us together.

This is scarily good.

I have a certain fondness for:

Miss You Most

Oh!
In the springtime
Those memories start to fade
With the April rain
Through the summer days
'Til autumn's leaves are gone
I get by without you
'Til the snow begins to fall
And then
I MISS YOU

Your faves could never.

Her best ballad in my opinion (other than Outside). The milky heaviness of her voice during that era was magical

Not came close, exceeds. 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' is a good song, but it doesn't hold a candle to the GOAT, 'Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)'.

I think Touchdown's point is more that Mariah's is an original song, co-produced and co-written by her (with only one other person, Walter Afanasieff) that managed to become an annual Holiday classic.

This is probably the 2nd best Christmas song.

Me and Kelly Kapowski were incredibly blind sided when we found out George Michael was gay.

Eh, i was watching Last Christmas videoclip a few years ago and I had to wonder how did we NOT see George Michael was gay even back then.
He's caricatural, even.

Everytime I open a PopGAF thread, I always end up regretting it. I need to learn from my mistakes.

All I Want for Christmas is You is my favorite Christmas song. I do love the Phil Spector Christmas album and the Beach Boys Christmas album too. When I worked retail, it's one of the few Christmas songs I never got tired of hearing.

Holy shit, watching that Fallon video made me realize I actually DO want Mariah Carey for Christmas. Who would have known?

She's always at the top of my wish list. But I feel like I've never been a good enough boy.
Or naughty enough? Maybe that's my problem.
