Why hasn't any artist been able to match Mariah's "All I Want For Christmas Is You"?

DOn't worry. In 15-20 years when Gen X and Millennials take this shit over, its gonna be Home Alone OST, Mariah Carey, all the 80s and *90s Christmas time songs, and Trans-Siberian Christmas all the time.

*no thank you to the late 90s pop bands like Nsync please. Maaaaybe for Destiny Child's shit. Maybe.

So glad chrismas is over. Now I don't have to listen to this piece of shit song 8 times an hr from a shitty artist. Along with all other christmas songs.

Because it is all about money now, even Mariah & that is the problem/reason, lets make a song that will keep being played at Christmas so we will get a fat cheque every spring.

I don't like Mariah or her music/songs never have, as for Christmas songs, the best imo is Frankie Goes To Hollywood - The Power Of Love it was #1 here in the UK Christmas 1984, it doesn't even has Christmas in the lyrics, it is not flashy or hip, it's about the fundamental meaning of Christmas "love"., it is also well written, performed & has a good video.

This is such a US-specific thread. We seem to have a totally different family of Christmas songs here in the UK, and most are from the late 70s and 80s. All I Want for Christmas Is You is definitely well known, but I wouldn't say it leads the pack or anything, it's easily beaten by Wham and Wizzard and under tough competition from The Darkness with Don't Let The Bells Stop which is from several years later.

The GOAT is Fairytale of New York, though. It's the most honest Christmas song and the most heartfelt.

First Christmas when I didn't hear this song, not even once. Wham's Last Christmas played like 3 times a day though.

I read an article about this a few years ago. The author argued that the only person even close to creating new hit Christmas songs was Colbert from his Christmas special. Nutmeg should be getting airplay.

Don't forget Slade's "Merry Xmas Everybody".

Well y'all....we did it.

AIWFCIY has peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 this year. The highest peak by a Christmas song ever. Cheers. It will be within the top 10 next year. A+mazing!!

Normally I would argue the mediocrity of the song and how overplayed it is, but I know Touchdown has a blinded, misguided love, so enjoy your season Touchdown. 😗

Because you let your disillusions become reality and have created this thread in attempt to confirm said delusions. Much like how Mariah manufactured a narrative about Eminem's obsession with her when we all know that isn't the case.

I don't know about you but here in Southeast Asia, AIWFCIY is always overplayed here alongside our set of Christmas classics.

Also, while "Last Christmas" is also popular, I've actually never heard the original Wham version in public. They mostly play covers of it

Exactly what I was thinking when going through this thread. We have such a rich tradition of Christmas songs from the 70s/80s, it feels like the US are really missing out if all they want for Christmas is Mariah.

Edit: Out of curiosity, how well-known is Do They Know It's Christmas in the US?

My question in the OP was: How come no artist has come close yet since it's release in terms of critical acclaim and commercial success?

Nobody has answered yet it seems.
There are a bunch of Christmas songs out there that get wheeled out every year. Simple logic dictates that one of them has to be the most successful, and it happens to be this one. If it were a different one this thread would be asking the same question for that song instead.

Ugh these GIFs...do we have a containment protocol for escaped PopGAF inmates?

Anyways, best christmas song is objectively "Last Christmas", as it is the only one that manages to actually make people feel an emotion.

Hatred. Pure unadulterated hatred.

The. Best.
