The PS4/720 leap will be big.
If this fundamentally bothers you as a Nintendo fan, well, wait six years. Nintendo will get those graphics then.

Never expected Nintendo to match whatever the PS4/720 will do. All I want are third-party games that can be ported to Wii U -- CoD, etc..

I'm prepared for it though. I really don't know what to expect from Japan at this point.I think this is a pretty pessimistic view of things. If Wii U gets better Japanese support from Day 1, that should lead to a healthier userbase for 3rd party projects, leading to more and more support, etc.
I refuse to believe Japanese companies are dumb enough, and can even afford, to ignore what is most likely going to be the home console leader.

they're selling the engine because it improves usability and functionality for developers a lot--that's their big push. not "whoa look how sick this looks" (though there's a bit of that, too, with all the fancy lighting and all dem crazy particles [they shoulda called it Unreal Engine 4 featuring Lots of Particles!!!]) but more "look how EASY it is do to all these awesome things and you don't need to call the programmers to do it!"
Well I guess that explains your monstrous posts.Ah, my biggest problem with english is sometimes it takes me a lot more words to say the same thing. I require moar focus.
How do you feel about stuff like Watch Dogs and that Star Wars game?I really, honestly believe people are understating what will be accomplished with next generation graphics processing. I do see where the argument comes from, but I think it's moot in face of the fact the games will, by visual presentation, impress people. I think in terms of highly detailed large scale environments, physics, lighting/shadows, particle effects, and the complexity of a given scene people will be blown away, and feel it is indeed a leap over current generation capabilities.
The limitations of current generation consoles are hidden fairly well when using micro levels, but as soon as you start opening things up and demanding more complexity on a greater scale the limitations become obvious. People might not be blown away by something like the UE4 tech demo, but I assure you if you're playing something with that graphical fidelity, able to explore those distant snowy mountains in real time with that detail, the difference will be felt.
But I guess that's an underlying philosophy I have when it comes to being impressed by games. In still, and even via trailers, graphics are not as impressive as when you're sitting there, controller in hand, interacting with the world yourself, controlling the camera, and navigating the environments.
MS got Cave to make another game for them for Spring 2013, one of the few niches the Xbox has a hold of in Japan. If Nintendo can get Monster Hunter on the Wii U than they pretty much own most of Japan.
Much better but considering sales of console games, not everyone can tell or most likely just don't care. I figure the existence of games are a bigger deal than the graphics themselves. Next gen systems won't match them.In the realms of common sense, how much better are $3000 PC rigs compared to the best examples seen on current gen, and then how much of that are Sony/MS going to wack into their systems to sell at $500s or less?
Listening to the 8-4 podcast, they basicly confirm that DQ X won't launch with Wii U. That's to bad, because it could have been a big title in Japan and at the same time it could show the online capabillities according to them. But, afterwards they talk about having something else in Japan and they know Nintendo has some big stuff ready for Wii U.Yeah it is really frustrating- I have said over and over how I expect Japanese support to be good, but until we see something its all just guess work.

At this point I'm wondering what it could be; sure, you'll automaticly turn to Capcom and Monster Hunter, but surely there are other titles that could sway Japan? A big Mussou game, maybe Yakuza? I don't know which (console) series could have a big enough impact on Wii U's launch, other than that certain Capcom IP.

Exactly. Average user notices jump from 2d to 3d. Average user notices jump from SD to HD. Average user noticed difference between current HD gen and topend PC? Not so much. Meh. So. Who cares! Difference between Wii U and PS720 so vast it won't get decent ports? No.
8 bits to 16 bits? Ps1 to Ps2 (N64 to GC)? Graphics is not the most important but when you guys downsize the effect it has on people, it just sounds like fear.
Everyone will see the difference between this gen and the next gen. And Wii U will have the down port (if it has any, hopefully), and microsoft and sony will marketing their version as the best looking ones.
Now what is a fact, is that graphics is not the main factor for someone to pick a game, simple as it is, but we will see the damn difference.
Completely off topic but who thinks Final Fantasy XIII-3 will come to Wii U?.
You know Square is making it
I don't see it happening. Square enix probably wouldn't put Final Fantasy 13-3 on a platform where people might not have played the first 2 games
I swear this thread is going in circles. It goes like this:
Wii U graphics capabilities talk
then 3rd party talk
then xbox 720 and ps4 talk
then games we want to see on Wii U
rinse and repeat
There is one thing I'm curious about? Japanese launch games.
Think about it. Do you really think the launch games announced will satisfy the people in Japan?
I have a feeling that when Nintendo announces Japanese support, some of it will fill the launch lineup in other territories.
Sorry but I don't buy that for one second. Improvements in user interface and optimizations to the workflow are standard and should be expected from any revision. And they're also looking at a much harder market to license their engine this gen when most big publishers are using their own in house engines rather than licensing anymore.
Most studios using UE3 have allready optimized it to their workflow so the biggest pro would be that UE4 can now do a lot more sparkles.
I think one of the biggest messages of this current generation is the fact how Microsoft and Sony heavily rely on 3rd parties.
Just read the Pachter interview about Nintendo and I guess I never realized he intends to be taken as tongue and cheek humorous. I don't follow him or what he says very much but I just assumed he was a serious business guy.
With that change in understanding of him, I might change my personal perception of him and his comments. He still seems to be wrong a lot, but at least now I understand he never really intends to be correct per-say, he's just a guy who spends a lot of time on the internet and makes guesses at things like a lot of us do; only he gets paid to do it. Now that I know he's trying to be goofy, I can read his interviews in that tone. I think doing that will help a lot.
Epic are making their engine for the licensing market, it's a deeper story than you think. Just because they're popular doesn't mean it's going to be best engine for any game, infact people don't even dream of what IDTech5 [...]

Nothing news worthy but here is Darksiders 2 Wii U box art

Yeah, like I said earlier Monster Hunter came to mind because it is a big online title and 8-4 has a history with that series.
Nothing else really comes to mind as being something online based that is likely for launch window.

I doubt these japanese launch games exist at this point

Ikr? People need to realize that Sony can't afford to create a super computer after their many loses, and Microsoft has lost quite a few dollars off the 360 as well, not to mention, they have no incentive to go high-end when they know Nintendo and Sony aren't going to either.
Next gen will be a repeat of last gen, plain and simple.
Last gen? So far every gen provided a huge graphical leap over its predecessors. If that's what you expect from next gen I'd say you shouldn't be too disappointed.
PS3 was quite expecive because of the newer tech at the time (Bluray and CELL processor). It also had PS2 chips in it. Now Bluray tech is very common and much cheaper, they probably go with a more cost efficient CPU, and i doubt that PS3 hardware will be in the PS4. Based on this, i dont think that it would be unrealistic to expect a big leap and still see a ~$400 pricetag. The Xbox 360 was also around this price at launch.Ikr? He means the difference between the Wii U, PS4, and Xbox 720 will be like the Dreamcast, PS2, GameCube, and Xbox.

I also think that Microsoft and Sony will design their systems to last for a long time. The 10 year plan that some laughed at in the begining of the PS3 era is probably going to be even more realistic next generation, at least if this generation is anything to go by. Xbox 360 came out in 2005, now it is 2012 and we havnt even heard a word (officially) about a new Xbox.

Why would devs WANT to kill the Wii U?
Not sure devs have that kind of power, either.
Nintendo has... well, Nintendo. And their franchises.

the ps4 and nextbox are going to be port buddies while the nintendo thing will be starved for content again. although i'm guessing this time, developers will hope they can kill it before it ever takes off.
Yes, Sony has promised us a lot in the past, haven't they? That's why we're all enjoying our 120 FPS @ native 1080p on our PS3's =)
well publishers definitely starved the wii to death, at least. if the wii had assassin's creed, timely call of duties, and the games everything else got, it'd probably be more towards the 120m mark by now, at least.

The bad news: The PS3 version was playing beside it and the difference is night and day. Right now, PS3's version of Assassin's Creed III is, simply put, better. Even gamers without my robot eyes would be able to see the difference.
Smoother edges, better frame-rate, more detailed textures it's akin to the kind of difference we used to see in multiplatform games when the PS3 version would look shaky in comparison to Xbox 360 release. It could change before release of course, but that's how it is right now.
