Another Kickstarter with Wii U stretch goal:

Looks horrendous... No lie..

On another note, both I and the wife have really been enjoying Unepic. I really like the progression in the game, and the levels and the humor so far. It has a solid challenge even on normal.

I just downloaded Knytt Underground and played through the first chapter. The graphics are great, as are the characters and dialogue. I also like the gameplay, but preferred the chapter 1 to chapter 2 in that respect. I guess things change again in later chapters... But so far I'm pleasantly surprised.

Talk about right on time. Really digging UNEPIC right now. It's a side-scrolling dungeon crawler. Think D&D meets Metroidvania. The game has a great sense of humor, great animation, but above all, solid control.

Frankly, I was in the mood for a good Western-style RPG on the Wii U or 3DS, and this fits the bill perfectly. It's not a Rogue w/perma death, although enemies do re-spawn, and it's heavy on exploration. Game encourages mapping of a fairly large 2D castle. You'll fight the usual assortment of bats, trolls, and Satyrs, but the game rewards you with a pretty robust items menu with tons of close and far ranged weapons, spell casting, item equipping, and a great mixture of enemies and bosses that require you to shuffle your gear on the fly.

This is where the comfort of the gamepad shines. Every piece of gear is assignable, and discounting the touchscreen (i'm playing off screen), there are twelve quick-slots to use. UNEPIC is all about having the right tool for a the right job. Enter a room with an evil slug, and you'll need your sharp sword because bludgeoning weapons won't work nearly as well. Shattering the barrels behind them for randomized loot, however, requires that handy mace in your inventory. Don't forget to light the torches for light, though, as traps and hidden enemies lurk in darkened hovels. Typical stuff, really, but it all feels great on the Wii U gamepad.

Anyway, just wanted to let you guys know that if you're really kind of worn out from the Japanese aesthetic (I know, it's Nintendo), and want something a little more adventure-filled, UNEPIC is a polished piece of work.

The breezy adventure soundtrack keeps the game fun, but it's the sense of humor that keeps you going. An hour in, and the game has already called out references to Metal Gear, classic D&D, Dragon Warrior, and Casltevania.

For 9.99 on the shop, this is just what the doctor ordered. Looking at the list of upcoming Wii U games, there doesn't appear to be anything to scratch this type of itch coming out all year...which is sad.

So get it.

Probably going to be purchasing Earthbound and Super Mario World. I'll think about getting Unepic also with all the positive things I've been hearing about it.

Updated development info on Liege.

Wrecking Balls Arena DX is coming to Wii U

large.jpg

This would be a big moment for any up-and-coming developer, and Team Kakumei is wasting no time, as plans to bring its OUYA game Wrecking Balls Arena to the Nintendo system under the name Wrecking Balls Arena DX are already underway. Wrecking Balls Arena DX is no mere port however, it is a sequel/expansion to the original and will feature new stages, items and gameplay elements, whilst still retaining its previous hand-drawn style and charm. The game will be coming to the OUYA as well as the Wii U, possibly sometime in 2014, but the team is toying around with the Wii U’s unique capabilities in order to get the most out of the GamePad.

Despite the first unsuccessful Kickstarter, Eden Industries is marching on with their Wii U port of Citizens of Earth.

A quick update for everyone before I retreat to get some more work done. Nintendo was kind enough to provide us with a Wii U devkit a while back, and I finally got around to start working with it. So far, the port is going exceptionally well. Just curious: anyone think they'd play Citizens of Earth on Wii U?

It seems that if you at least give indie devs Wii U dev kits (like Adelman has been doing), they seem to be willing to release their titles wherever they can, including Wii U. My guess is Nintendo has made the process pretty reasonable =).

It can only help Nitendo, they need as many developers on board, and why not cultivate a relationship with Indies and give them free dev tools and ample support, then even a minor success can be a big windfall to an indy dev. The whole process ends up creating new developers that are Nintendo platform friendly which only contributes to future success.

It's something they should have been doing for a while, not just with Indies. It's amazing what a little effort and support can do. I would love to see what Adelman could accomplish if Nintendo just gave him carte blanche to get games on the system

Yup, it's one of the nice success stories for Nintendo these days. The Wii U has pretty remarkable indie support especially you consider that it's the successor to the Wii.

i'm going to second all of that.

Cavelight would like to bring their new game Velocity Stream to Wii U.

Quote from their website:

large.jpg

In Velocity Stream, one player takes control of tha Paver, a spacecraft that leaves a trail of energy in its wake as it moves through the game world. On this track, the other players race each other.

This brilliant game mechanic eliminates track memorization

To make the game even more unique, the team is planning to, via the introduction of the Activator Mode, eliminate all shapes of downtime.

4-player splitscreen gameplay video

I think the idea is interesting, but it would be even better, if it's merely the player in first position that sets the track. You need to overtake him to take control of the track. To avoid stutter when both (numbers one and two) are neck and neck, the player that overtakes the other could gain a small boost to take some distance, so it doesn't skip 10 times per second when they are right besides each other. That way it gets a bit of a Tron tactics and mechanics (although you wouldn't die running into the borders, more like F-Zero, were you slow down and lose some power). The moment you are in the lead, you could make a sharp turn, making the player that was in first position just moments before crash into a wall. It would be a game mechanic that would lead to a tactical crossover between Tron, Mario Kart and F-zero. What's not to like!

this is exactly the kind of game that the Wii U needed at launch. I mean, why only do 4 player, on Wii U they could easily do five player MP...

It makes me want a D&D style old school RPG where one player uses the gamepad to lead the other players through a Dungeon.

Me too, it would be great! Something like Demons Souls with a "Dungeon master mode", or something like Dungeon Keeper. I've seen this idea in an old pre-launch article on the Wii U:

4 words: Starbeast, exclusive WiiU title. Formal announcement coming soon. @Emi1yRogers, thanks for the support!

Another one having an announcement soon

Whoa, that game is still alive? It's been ages since it was announced as in development!

Initially said to be a PC, iPhone, iPad, Android, Nintendo 3DS eShop, Wii U game!

That was last may (that's when I made the Giant Bomb wiki page)

curious to see what it is!

Updates:

Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's Party update scheduled to February 13th
The new GamePad themed update of Spin the Bottle: Bumpie’s Party will be available on February 13th. The update introduces 6 new minigames focusing on the technology of the GamePad such as the camera, gyroscope, face and smile detection, touch screen and thumb sticks.

The update will be free for owners of the game, but after February 13th the price of the game will increase to 8.99€/11.99$. This pricing structure is new to console games:

We are basically trying to do “DLC’s done right”. Instead of trying to milk extra money out of your hardcore fans and early adopters, we reward them with free content. New customers will have to pay a bit more, but they are also getting a better game for the money so I don’t really see anyone losing. Says Lau Korsgaard, Creative Director in KnapNok Games.

The update will include:
- The six new minigames that lets you photograph, tickle, twist and mime for each other, bringing the total number of minigames up to 23.

- We are taking pictures of you while you play! View them later in the gallery for laughter or embarrassment.

- Lots of new bonus challenges added for even more variation.

- TV settings: finally you can decide what is shown on the TV by choosing between classic, campfire, clone or camera mode.

- Plus lots of small tweaks and fixes

New mini games:

Act like an Animal
A classical charades game! The GamePad shows a picture of an animal, one player has to mime it, the partner have to guess it. Can you mime a gorilla, a kangaroo or a crab? What about a unicorn, worm or a T-Rex?

Put your Hat on
Use the GamePad screen and camera to search around the room for virtual hats placed in the air. One player positions themselves with the hat on their head. The partner simply has to take a picture.

Footie Ball
A game of two, playing ball on the GamePad, using only their feet.

Don’t Laugh
In this game the two players are playing against the audience. The goal of the players is to look into the camera and not laugh. The goal of the audience is do everything they can in order to stop the players doing just so.

Body Twister
Player A holds the GamePad on their knee, player B touches the screen with their elbow. Player A holds the GamePad on their stomach, player B touches the screen with their nose. Player A holds the GamePad on their shoulder, player B touches the screen with their butt.

Nature Photographer
In nature photographer two players holds the GamePad at the same time standing shoulder to shoulder. They now have to search the room for a butterfly and take pictures of it. This requires tight communication and coordinated movement.

It exists. Look for "Krautscape" on YouTube or Google ;)

Really hope we start getting some great eshop titles for Wii U. Nothing shown on the last couple pages really interests me.

Hmm... I really wonder what the hell Shin'en is doing. They said they only reveal game when they're ready to show something, yet they logo-revealed FRN and haven't shown anything since then. There's also that 2nd Wii U game that would be revealed "soon"... when? :p

Anyway, do we have an ETA on Tengami? It's definitely my most anticipated Wii U eShop title so far.

You think it'd be worth it for La-Mulana 1 to ever happen on Wii U?

It's clearly made for 640x480 in mind and judging by the sequel, it's not like they're making a full-blown HD game anyway even though they want to bring that to Wii U and other HD platforms.

Here's the original on Wii:

And it's 4:3 anyway which Nigoro even said would not have been possible in 16:9 anyway.

All Enjoy Up could do if they attempted is to make it scale better to 1080p and allow Off-TV play, but you'd be at the mercy of 4:3 unless they fake it with boarders which I don't like the idea of. Unless they do it right I guess.

What do you think?

With the way EnjoyUp handles their WiiU ports, I would say that it's likely. You should ask them on Facebook. They seemed pretty keen on the idea of an HD Chronos Twin when I asked them.

I asked about that and to help with LM2 on Wii U, they just said to just help the KS it seems.

A port of LM1 shouldn't be that expensive at all, especially if they do it Two Tribes style, and give it to us for $2! :D
