Wat...wat? That cannot be true, surely.
It isn't. Read the OP if you want to know how storing and using download data works.

How many titles can the Premium and Basic Sets store in their internal storage memory?
The size of software titles will vary, so it's difficult to give a concrete answer. Please refer to the software size in the Nintendo eShop before purchasing. If there is insufficient internal storage memory, an external USB storage device can be connected to expand upon the internal storage memory. SD cards cannot be used to expand upon the internal storage memory. Details on USB devices confirmed to work will be posted in the following days.
Is it possible to copy or move software between the internal storage memory and an external USB storage device?
It is possible to move, but not to copy. For details, please select Data Management from the System Settings in the Wii U menu.
UPDATE: It turns out we were misinterpreting this information and it appears what we feared only applies to the SD card slot of the Wii U. USB hard drives should work fine and should be able to launch games just the same as you expected. Sorry folks.
Wait so this means I can't play brawl with a gamecube controler on the Wii U?
Man these questions reveal so many fails about the Wii U. Come on it can't even play dvds?! Well it probaly can my Wii can sure it has to be hacked to do so but it can. Also no achivments that makes me kind of sad I don't understand why you wouldn't put this in here. Also the lack of universal voice chat is rather anoying. Overall this system software wise is more limited than the current gen xbox and that is just stupid once microsoft releases the next gen xbox the nintendo will be really far behind I would imagine.
Where are downloadable software purchases stored?
Downloads can be stored either to the internal storage memory or to an external USB storage device. Saving to an SD Card is not supported.
What should be done when there is insufficient remaining space in the Wii U internal storage memory to download a new game?
Please increase the amount of available space by deleting unneeded data from the system's Data Management menu. Otherwise, use an external USB storage device to increase the amount of available space.
Do we know if Wii U will have a media player, can it play avi/mp4 files?
Playing videos I'd a huge part of how I use my PS3. I'll be disappointed if Wii U doesn't do this.
Without this functionally I would seriously reconsider buying this console. Hopefully this does have it.There's been no mention of any such media playback functionality.

With all the TVii talk they've been doing....of course not.Best not to get your hopes up. Nintendo isn't trying to make a multimedia machine.
excellent OP, as expected. if an SD card is required for the Wii > WU transfer, this means in addition to the one in said Wii, yeah? i figure i gotta have another one about here somewhere, no idea if it's a decent capacity or not.
also if im sitting on a VC code for Super Punch-Out!! i got from Club Nintendo, does it makes more sense to just redeem it now or on suday via the new WU?
There's one question about Miis that hasn't been answered yet and it's really bugging me...
Will you be able to use your personal Mii from your 3DS as your personal Mii on Wii U? Meaning, instead of having to make a new, separate Mii when you set up your account on Wii U, will you have the option to copy your Mii over from your 3DS and use that? I sure hope so. =/
So you can copy over your personal Mii? Oh, good!! I was disappointed that you couldn't do that with Wii to 3DS.
