Wii U Next Big Steps.

Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3 and Monster Hunter are right around the corner. Well I´m not so sure about Pikmin...

We will likely see some games get pushed back a bit. However, Nintendo confirmed that it intentionally delayed the release of some of its 1st party games because of the amount of third-party support at launch. It must have at least including Pikmin 3.

That's what I've been thinking since E3. For a moment, with these fall conferences, they've made me believe that this ,,launch window focus'' wasn't just some farce to cover up that they simply couldn't get anything better ready, but now Pikmin and W101 don't even make it out until march in EU anymore and both are arguably the only somewhat big efforts from Nintendo themselves for longterm fans. And really, after playing it myself I don't think it's possible to completely erase the evidence that Pikmin was originally a Wii game. Which makes it incredibly dubious that they have to hold this back instead of getting it out at launch.

If the next E3 conference isn't convincing, it's save to say that their entry into HD development has utterly failed imo. And no, they haven't abandoned E3 for the sake of these Directs, the major announcements will still happen there.

A pessimistic Spieler Eins-post. Colour someone surprised. First, no they didn´t abandon the E3. It is just not the only place to go anymore. Nintendo has been obviously been able to announce BLOPS2 and Bayo 2 outside E3.

Your argument is also pretty weird. You mention W101 but instantly drop it for the sake of "If the next E3 conference isn't convincing, it's save to say that their entry into HD development has utterly failed imo."

Is multi-touch really that wanted? (3)DS isn't multi-touch, is it? They seem to be making cool stuff for those handhelds without it.

With clever design I don't think the lack of multi-touch is an issue at all. I honestly haven't even noticed it doesn't have it. Gaf being gaf I think

LOL, do people still think Nintendo has this super secret stash of games they're just waiting to announce? That they're just keeping silent for strategic purposes?

I don't know about anyone else, but what I learned from the Wii U launch fiasco is that when Nintendo keeps silent about certain details, it's not a good thing.

I'm 100% certain they have plenty of games in the making we don't know about yet. Why wouldn't they?

Right now they want us focusing on the launch window.

Just give me games and a faster OS.

Well for the moment Miiverse loads quite faster now. It took a while to load during launch day but now everything is very quick.

Another thing is that now there's real people and real drawings in the OS, I took like 5 minutes to watch those, there's some real good artists in there.

The rest of the OS needs some tweaks thought, I believe it'll happen soon enough.

Next big Steps?
  • native Virtual Console
  • faster OS
  • eShop demos

Two out of three should be accomplished by the end of the year... hopefully VC comes next.
After that: Game announcements to wash away some of the bad press the Wii U has gotten so far.

Universal accounts with proper DRM solution.
Really, right now, that's what I am hoping/pushing for the most.

I know I'll get demos and that the VC will be implemented, but a universal account system is top priority right now.

Does the Mii Verse app load faster or is the app just snappier? It's HTML so I can see how they speed up the app, but there's been no more patches so how can loading get faster?

No updates since launch day, but it really does load faster, quite a lot even.

Detach NNIDs from their consoles (we KNOW it's coming, anyone who paid attention to Nintendo Direct knows it's coming the second they mentioned integrating it into the 3DS), just sooner rather than later.

And in no particular order:

Virtual Console on eShop

New NintendoLand attractions

More games

OK, then that's weird. I wonder if Nintendo has compressed the apps and essentially caches the uncompressed ones you use the most?

It would not surprise me if they just tie it to one console of a type. 1 3DS, 1 Wii U etc.

A lot of the load times people were seeing could just be because the system was booting these features for the first time, server load balancing tweaks, optimizations to the service itself or a combination of all 3.

Nah, we'll get 2 for consoles, 2 for handhelds, multiple instances on smartphones/tablets (since you can't put those games on non-Nintendo hardware anyways), only one of each active at any one time, polls the server when you launch a game.

Nintendo's next step needs to be getting out a graphical powerhouse game that will silence all the message board detractors. That should be the top priority. I bet it's causing Iwata to wake up at night profusely sweating.

Yeah....this wont happen.

I'm not so sure.

Ericsson's engineers stated flat out that the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 phone could not do multi-touch, and then about a year after it was out there was an update that magically added it...

Yeah I guess it's possible the app screen just sits there as it's contacting the network and doing who knows what.

You're optimistic, but I hope that happens! I only need one more in case my Wii U dies.

I have no idea how the fuck they can do it, but they need to try and convince people the Wii U shouldn't be compared to the Nextbox and PS4 when they launch next year. Other than that, Nintendo will continue to sell boatloads of 1st party software.

Nintendo 3rd party ports are going to be fucked. If the Wii U is having trouble porting current gen games, then when the Nextbox and PS4 come, they're boned for the most part. The future ports are going to look so fucking wretched in comparison...they basically will be entirely different games. With that said, Nintendo and 3rd party devs need to be smart, so you may actually see a lot of 3rd party exclusives that get ported to the other consoles much later on.

In terms of what I want...I'll buy the thing when the first real Mario, Zelda, Smash, or Metroid game comes out for it. Nintendo consoles almost will always catch me because of their exclusive software.

You answered your own question. WiiU needs great exclusives, like Bayo 2 and Nintendo's own games.

Next round of announcements has to be big.

Well, it stands to reason that if they don't do it this way, content migration 6 years from now is going to involve ANOTHER software tool that doesn't need to exist if they just did it this way, among all the other benefits. So it's gonna be there.

Gamecube Controller Pro, with a Wii U/Wii mode Toggle.

Probably gonna be third party, but would be awesome to make a website where you can get ones with skins based on your favorite Nintendo Franchise or character or even a SSB one.

Also make ones that are Atomic Purple, Fire Orange, Jungle Green, Watermelon Red, Smokey Gray, or Ice Blue....

Also work out a Starcraft U or Army Men RTS U.

Also, also Pokemon Snap! U!

Also more MMO support, get some Free 2 Plays in there.

Also Breakfast.

I think they could have showed a lot more at the last E3. But they needed something to combat 2013 E3-nextgen-pocalypse.

It's been a few years since the last stellar Nintendo E3. I think this year will be it.

pikmin 3's delay kinda sucks the most since that'll probably end the franchise. it could have had some time to shine during launch, especially given what the launch titles were.

if nintendo's initiative to revive old franchises is real (we've probably seen examples in seaman, bayonetta, and zombi), then they probably have a couple things being held close to their chest. not a ton, but maybe two or three more exclusive titles outside of their first-party offerings that would be a bone to throw to the hardcore.

i almost fully expect retro's next game to hit next year. ead tokyo's next console game should be launching next year as well.

the only wild card is more traditional third party games. i don't think the wii u will get the quirky stuff the wii did. it'll probably get the occasional franchise hanger-on like no more heroes 3 or something, but those quirky games will be on the 3ds, mobile devices, and/or virtual store services. multiplayer games is a must, and more than that- they have to work well. i think the stigma the wii u will never overcome is having xbox 360 games that run way worse. not that i think matters will improve on that front as time goes on.

Multi-touch is an answer to phones and tablets not having buttons. Why would it be needed on a system with a full array of inputs.

All I want is a faster OS and bug fixes so my console doesn't crash. I also wouldn't mind a bigger battery (only 1500mAH on Game Pad) so it doesn't run out of battery in like 3 hours. I mean, my phone has a way bigger battery than the Game Pad.

Your argument is also pretty weird. You mention W101 but instantly drop it for the sake of "If the next E3 conference isn't convincing, it's save to say that their entry into HD development has utterly failed imo."

I don't see the relation between these two things. Approaching PG for developing games for them has easily been their best move for more dedicated gamers, but it's also worrisome if they still have to hold back their Wii Pikmin to fill gaps later, a game that should have been released this year at latest. And it's equally dubious that in my country I won't even get that game, nor W101 in the launch window - which has been their biggest promise in all of the consoles promotion until launch. (Which means that US/JP releases must also be somewhere in march and could equally still be delayed)

So at this point, the thing will mostly be a Monster Hunter machine for me and if E3 doesn't show drastic improvements in their lineup, I don't expect it to ever be more than average and most likely not anywhere near the 1st party brilliance they had on the Wii (Which might have only happened because they could still use GCN tech?)

i honestly cant think of much at the moment past account migration...they already said they wanted login from PC/mobile etc, once i can migrate my account & purchases as i shouldve been able to day 1 ill be good

Next is the Wii U ambassador program :)

i mean, i'd welcome free gamecube games, yeah

I just want the GamePad to come in matte instead of glossy finish.

in all likelihood they'll sell the battery + or whatever but if and when they do a whole new pad, yeah this'd be cool

anyone asking for sort've gen-splitting stuff like analog triggers, multi-touch screens aint happening though

You answered your own question. WiiU needs great exclusives, like Bayo 2 and Nintendo's own games.

I was talking from my own experience, and knowing this is the first generation where I'll likely have expendable cash at hand to buy these tings, that's not the case for a lot of younger gamers who can only get one machine, or people only interested in gaming enough to pick up one machine.

I think Neogaf gamers are more of a special case, rather than the standard. We love gaming enough to buy stuff that we might not play 24/7. I mean people here bought Vitas for Pete's sake.

Is there a list of games currently in development for WiiU?

If the next E3 conference isn't convincing, it's save to say that their entry into HD development has utterly failed imo. And no, they haven't abandoned E3 for the sake of these Directs, the major announcements will still happen there.

Like 3DS XL.
And the new design for the Gamepad.
And New Super Mario Bros. 2.
And New Super Mario Bros. U
And Bayonetta 2.
And if we ignore Iwata's comments last month about the success of Nintendo Direct, and the desire to increase prominence on them.

No one's saying they're abandoning E3 (I certainly think the biggest titles of next year will be revealed there, as a spoiler for Microsoft and Sony's next offerings if nothing else), but it's pretty myopic not to notice that the biggest revelations of 2012 were done through Directs and other internet broadcasts.

Animal Crossing U
Baten Kaitos U
Donkey Kong U
Dragon Quest U
EarthBound U
F-Zero U
Final Fantasy U
Fire Emblem U
Golden Sun U
Kirby U
The Legend of Zelda U
Mario Galaxy U
Mario Kart U
Mario Party U
Metal Gear Solid U
Metroid U
Pilotwings U
Pokémon U
Sin and Punishment U
Sonic U
Star Fox U
Super Smash Bros. U
Wario Ware U
U Wars
Yoshi U

add:

1080 U
Batallion Wars U (or is this U Wars in the above list?)
Chibi Robo U
Custom Robo U
Disaster U
Eternal Darkness U
Geist U
Luigi's Mansion U
Mystical Ninja U
Odama U
Rogue Squadron U
Super Mario Sunshine U
Wave Race U
Xenoblade U

And I'll be super happy.

Also, bring back the bongo controller.

All I want to see at this point are some more games announced for the thing.

He speaks the truth. I'm worried about 2013 since we don't know what's coming to the system after March 2013. The state of third party support isn't clear either, so it's kind of worrying.

Firmware that makes the OS less buggy and snappier, everything takes a little too long for my liking.

I don't expect them to talk about 2013 games until after the New Year.

I would like to see them throw the hardware in the pad itself so it functions away from home as a sort of super portable but still automatically throws to a TV at home.

Like i said, there's no point for them to talk about future heavy hiiters right now. They will sell all supplies of the WiiU for the rest of the hollidays. So they keep these announcements for when they need to create some noise.

I love it because it feels like a DS even more, but I want NO DS style Zelda on it! NO Phantom HOur Glass, cho cho train thing, I hated those games. I want pretty big, more dark souls than skyrim, zelda.
