Wii U Next Big Steps.

The next big step will be of course NFC.

it's also worrisome if they still have to hold back their Wii Pikmin to fill gaps later, a game that should have been released this year at latest.

Why is it worrying for you? Why do you have to call it Wii Pikmin? You have the end product?

And it's equally dubious that in my country I won't even get that game, nor W101 in the launch window - which has been their biggest promise in all of the consoles promotion until launch. (Which means that US/JP releases must also be somewhere in march and could equally still be delayed)

European? Its also the biggest promise for you first and foremost. And what is so dubious for you. Yeah, these games can be delayed. Thats normal.

So at this point, the thing will mostly be a Monster Hunter machine for me and if E3 doesn't show drastic improvements in their lineup, I don't expect it to ever be more than average and most likely not anywhere near the 1st party brilliance they had on the Wii (Which might have only happened because they could still use GCN tech?)

You know nothing about their upcoming first party titles, but you are already hanging your attitude out of the window. Sigh.

Nintendo's response: Fuck U

But seriously, I will be pretty upset if there aren't 1080 and Wave Race sequels, or if they are relegated to some lame-ass minigames in Wii Sports U or something.

I wouldn't mind taking a break from Mario for awhile. The market's been oversaturated with the portly plumber, in my opinion. I love Mario games, but seriously, I want some variety!

I would love to see a return to even more franchises that got neglected last gen. Starfox, F-Zero, Earthbound...or maybe bring some more NES franchises back, like Ice Climbers, Takamaru, or Wrecking Crew. Or, God forbid, some new IPs. I would love a Pokemon Snap U or Endless Ocean U (c'mon Arika!) or something similar as well to round out the year.

I don't think they'll fail us on the games front, but I certainly wouldn't expect Zelda or Mario. Maybe Metroid, since Miyamoto seemed to be hinting at that.

I'd love to see what Retro or Monolithsoft are working on, and when those games will come out.

Zelda is already in development for WiiU. Mario, besides Smash Bros, has nothing. Atleast there is nothing announced.

Ubisoft Paris should make their next sword fighting game called F U. It would actually be rated M for mature (unlike red steel) and finally deliver on all the promises their sword fighting games were supposed to offer (online sword fighting, gun play, actual blood, etc). Also, the potential for asynchronous play is endless! For instance, they could have classes that play completely differently and use different skill sets. Combat class focuses on guns, grenades, etc (can use either wii-mote or Pro Controller). Sword class would use wii-mote and focus on stealth and sword-play. Mechanic would would the WiiPad and focus on map awareness, turret placement, and other tactical options. Pilot could focus on vehicular options, like pick-ups and drop-offs, drive/fly-bys, remote weapons, etc. He would use the Gamepad as well.

I see a lot of options of a combat game like this. F U... happen now!

After Red Steel 2, I have faith in their development teams (unless they have changed... probably have).

Since the gamepad pro idea is being thrown around let's consider 3rd party Upads. Will it happen? Could Nintendo let it happen? What company could pull it off and would it be a rare instance of a 3rd party controller being significantly better than the hardware it's based off of?

The obstacles look rather intimidating for any company looking to make a Upad alternative. The hardware is simply more expensive than a typical dual analog controller. Nintendo isn't even selling the controller separately now and have not announced anything changing that in the near future. No games support two main controllers either and obviously won't until Nintendo does it themselves. A company could sell a Upad alternative as a convenient replacement controller when Joe Shmo's 8 year old son hurls the original down the steps. I doubt designing a controller to be a strict Upad clone would sell very much. The demand would simply be from people who broke their controller and could not get Nintendo to replace or fix it. There might be however a golden opportunity to improve upon the Upad's hardware. It would be pointless trying to add multi-touch or analog triggers as no games support it but surly Nintendo's LCD display could be trumped. I suppose Nintendo did leave room for a bigger battery in their controller but a new controller designed with long battery life in mind could truly solve any complaints about wanting to play the WiiU controller in long sessions or too many charges.

I think Nyko had a good thing with wii controllers and accessories. Unless my memory fails me I think Nyko was the first to market with a non-Nintendo wiimote/nunchuck. They even beat Nintendo at making a classic controller that was not tethered to the wiimote and integrated M+ into the controller before the official wiimote+. They will surly keep selling these as the U still supports them but will they take the next big step forward? All their accessories I've tried are clearly cheaper than the Nintendo counterparts. They have the advantage to sell their products much cheaper. I'm hoping if they do make a NykoUpad(clearly I am not getting paid to name it) it offers a technological advantage over the official Nintendo product and not just a price advantage. I just don't think Nyko would go that route though.

What company is known capable of making a controller as advanced as the Upad and could do it better? Not much comes to mind sadly. Logitech might fit the bill as they've made game controllers and some seriously fancy universal remotes though I've never tried either first hand. Could other electronics companies that have never even dabbled in video game hardware step up?

I may just be getting ahead of myself though. Nintendo needs to allow any possible third party controller to function with the WiiU. There hasn't ever been a console in recent memory that did not have third party controllers but this situation seems unique. I don't see a reason Nintendo shouldn't support Upad alternatives but Nintendo might get weird about it. I may just be paranoid about this though.

Just curious, why not?

Can't speak for Blasty but some people were upset about buying motion+ just to be able to play the games that needed it. A better screen would not be needed to play certain games, it just enhances the experience. You will have to buy the new multi-touch controller though if the new Zelda requires it.

LOL, do people still think Nintendo has this super secret stash of games they're just waiting to announce? That they're just keeping silent for strategic purposes?

I don't know about anyone else, but what I learned from the Wii U launch fiasco is that when Nintendo keeps silent about certain details, it's not a good thing.

They has been silent about Black Ops 2, Bayonetta 2, Monster Hunter and even Epic Micky 2. Capcom, Activision and Waren Spector denied Black Ops 2 and Epic Micky 2 for Wii U until the big Wii U press conference where they all had been revealed.

So yes, I am sure Nintendo has some big third party announcements for the time after March 2013. And some big First Party announcements too. Nintendo Japan alread hints about Monoliths big Wii U RPG. Retro has something for Wii U in production, like many other Nintendo studios. At there sureky will be second party games like the Wii got in its last year with The Last Story, Pandoras Tower and Project Zero 2.

I'm thinkin a Wave Race and a 1080 game will definitely come out. Previous entries were graphically impressive, especially the water effects in wave race blue storm. Probably smart of them not to release them on wii.

The return of Ricky Winterborn will be glorious

The next step is to stop WiiU from hard crashing like it does sometimes.

Step after that is to fix the tv cut off problem. (It IS a hardware problem. Tried every option on my tv and it still doesn't size right. And no, changing the size in Miiverse/eShop doesn't work for the entire system. Just add a resize screen for entire system+games. There done.

Then add a proper account system damnit.

Edit: Reading a few posts it seems I may have misunderstood what this thread was about. Sorry if thats the case.

Seriously though, when MH3U and DQX come around I wont ever regret getting a WiiU, miiverse will be awesome with those 2 games.

I wouldn't be surprised if we had an add on at some point during the console cycle, I could definitely see the wiipad getting a revision just like the wiimote, maybe higher resolution better battery life, different screen type. Something that doesn't really affect those who already have the old version.

Apart from that hopefully just big changes to the operating system, UI, online infrastructure, downloadable games and movies, maybe even stuff like apps, that's where I hope the big improvement comes from.

But really the next big steps will be the Nintendo software, when all is said and done that will overshadow everything.

Higher resolution won't happen because it would affect the system. But a revision with better battery life, screen and less weight would be fantastic.

... longer battery life ...

They don't need a Gamepad+ to get longer battery life.

They just need a bigger/better battery. Notice that the current battery is only about half the size of the space in its compartment.

Can someone make a better pic and confirm if there are or are not any other connectors, plugs, slots, etc?

It's obvious that they have room for what a assume can only be a bigger/better battery, but if there are other connectors I could see them adding a rear facing camera or other peripheral.

Releasing the next good Final Fantasy console game. That would make for a nice coming home title. Wii U has the power to do it and it would be good for the series as well I guess.

Almost half of the games on this list did have a game on Wii last generation. No reason they couldn't do it all again plus more, despite the much bigger cost. Doing the bare minimum isn't enough, so I'd hope to see 3/4 of this list fulfilled by the end of the generation. :/
