Wii U Pro Controller announced - X360pad design, no screen, "for multiplatform games"

That stick placement could either be really smart or really dumb. The most accessible face button in that configuration is the X button, while on an Xbox controller it's the A. Multiplatform controls will not be identical as they are on PS3/360.

it has a mini usb slot that means is going to have a rechargeable battery like the ps3 controller , which is awesome and not cool at the same time. hopping that the battery light changes color like the 3ds/ds ones.

Good catch, it probably will.

A poster previously said they weren't mandating using the second screen

Still, there is incentive to use it. I'm sure reviews will knock points off if it's just a blank screen the entire time.

Honestly, the xbox 360 controller is one of, if not, the best designed controller ever. It feels great in your hands and is really well done. I don't mind Nintendo borrowing some designed concepts.

The thing is, will all WiiU games use the normal and Wiimote controller with this sort of feeling slapped on?

terrible analog layout, hopefully they release an alternative controller or allow third party support because this controller will keep me away from third party titles.

I'm glad the sticks are where they are, I mean maybe the 360 pad will still be better I dunno, but at least they're not like the DS3 or CC Pro. I'm also ok with the buttons placement.

It's bluetooth and rechargeable through mini-usb>USB and it has a proper power on/off button, cool.

Because the most obvious reasons why you'd need to use this controller, over the padlet, is for games that focus on dual analogue gameplay. The tablet is just fine for games that use the face buttons primarily.
Er, maybe if you never have to use the face buttons- but even then, why is this better?

Everyone should just copy those new MadCatz MLG controllers that let you customize the placement of your buttons and sticks.

Looks like it will be great for games that use dual analog. Using the face buttons, I have two concerns. The first is just whether it will be comfortable to be reaching like that. The second is that I will accidentally hit the power button. This is coming from someone who accidentally turned off his GB Color multiple times.

Wait, so the big selling point of the Wii U is the tablet controller, and this all but confirms only first party titles will use it........WTF?

I have to say, I loves me some symmetry. The bottom part is pretty much a SNES controller, this thing will great for all the roms you people will have to re-buy on the WiiU store. :P

Except the bottom controls look way too close together. I have really mixed feelings about this controller... this looks perfect if you're playing a twin-stick shooter, but for anything else? I don't know, looks awkward.

Impressed that Nintendo recognized the need for this, but please god swap the position of that 2nd analog controller/face buttons.

maybe?

Microsoft Suing Datel For Copying Controller Design

Microsoft has filed a lawsuit against British gaming peripheral manufacture Datel for allegedly infringing on several design patents from the Xbox 360 controller.

The two Datel third-party controllers brought into question are the "TurboFire" and "Wildfire" designs. The lawsuit states Datel is infringing on a total of six patents filed by Microsoft in 2006. The patents filed mostly deal with the front design and button layout of the controller.

Patents:

D522,011
D547,763
D581,422

The Aliens game and Darksiders both use the screen. This is more for multiplayer, or another option for games where the screen isn't very important (IE: just used for a map or menus).

Original Wii CC(s) might be problematic if the triggers on the pad/pro are analog. It's already gimped by not having clicky sticks. So probably just the pad, Wiimote, and pro CC.

I think you have that backwards a bit; the original CC had analog shoulder buttons and the CC Pro dropped them.

Granted, there wasn't a single Wii game that used the analog shoulder buttons, which suggests that at one point they were trying to do a different solution for GCN BC than the "shut off all the Wii bits" method they ended up using.

"For multiplatform games?"

Ugh. Sounds like the 1st party lineup is going to be plagued with forced gimmicks like the Wii-mote (waggle).

Hopefully it's just some touch control stuff.
