Wii U Pro Controller announced - X360pad design, no screen, "for multiplatform games"

It's understandable why GAF crashed now.

They picked the best controller to copy, but damn they had no shame with the way they ripped it off hardcore. Looking at that right analog placement is uncomfortable enough already too.

so wiiU:

  • buy console
  • buy wiimotes (X4)?
  • buy pads (X2-4)
  • buy memory card of some ilk

I can't wait for the tally of parts to have their console experience. The fact that there's a pad for 3rd party games... is NOT a positive thing.

The only thing you need is the console. I'm sure it will have some kind of built in storage, they just saw Sony shoot themselves in the foot with the Vita, Nintendo won't do that.

The Pro Pad is optional, not a requirement. Knowing Nintendo, the Wii U will probably have built-in storage and supports SD cards, not some Vita bullshit.

You realize the GamePad has all the same buttons and features as the Pro Pad, correct? Why would you need to buy that separate controller to play third party single player games? Now if you want to play multiplayer games, you'll need to purchase it, but that's been a fact since the 2600.

Welp I guess this about wraps up any possibility for (widely adopted) Wiimote'chuck shooter support, back to the dark ages of fumbling with inferior sticks.

Well I dunno about inferior, but yeah, I'd be extremely surprised if any Wii U game outside of first party titles would use the Wiimote.

Controller looks awesome, I need it in my hands. Maybe I will buy this at launch even though the New Mario game looks dissapointing so far.

The controller would be awesome if you could still have your WiiU screen pad work as sort of just a portable mini-map/HUD, and have the pro controller for standard gameplay.

Mmmm, please let this work for PC!

(Obviously Nintendo wouldn't do that, but if it connects with USB or Bluetooth then I hope modders could get it working)

We've been asking for a better Wii controller, I guess an off 360 copy is better then what we had before. Now we just need some hardcore games announced on Tuesday...

Not at all, most likely.

Granted, I could be wrong, but if anything the Wii U Pro Controller confirms that the Wiimote probably won't be used for anything but legacy controls. Similar to how the Wii had support for Gamecube controllers.

It'll be there, but devs probably won't use them. The Wii U Pro Controller looks to be the official secondary controller for the system.

This controller looks incredible. I'm not at all worried about the stick placement - looks great, honestly. Seems like there's a mini-USB port, too. Hopefully that's for charging a built-in battery, maybe as well as use the controller on PC.

I know there are already a crazy number of ways to control the Wii, but I welcome this new controller. Can't get enough Nintendo controllers, lol.

Symmetrical design is so much better than two analogues at different positions.

Howver the buttons do look to be in a wierd position.

Why? I prefer asymmetrical because it emphasizes the fact that each stick serves a specialized function - ie one stick is for movement and one is for camera control.

I'll check this out because I've been looking for something better than the silver edition 360 pad (not to mention the fucking Hori EX2 being eternally out of stock and insanely overpriced in the aftermarket), and this could be it, but I really hope the button placement will work out. I'll say this much: even though the stick placement is symmetrical, I still think it will feel better than Sony's decade-old design due to their higher positions. I'd rather reach my thumbs up vertically than across horizontally because I strongly believe that position offers an easier, wider range of movement for the standard human hand.

The classic controller pro was pretty awkward in my hands, so this is excellent news.
I wonder if MS is going to take issue with this...
Why would they? Can't think of a controller that isn't in some shape or form inspired by other controllers.

Dual Shock 3 is comfortable to me.

Classic Controller Pro is comfortable to me.

Xbox 360 controller is comfortable to me.

This looks like it will be comfortable to me, the swapped button/analog stick layout should not be an issue IMO.

agreed with all of the above. All the uproar kinda baffles me.

People crapping their pants over the button placement should keep calm and remember that at some point during the design and manufacture of this controller, someone probably held it in their hands to see if it was comfortable.

The most important thing I want to know is how comfortable the sticks are. Nintendo has stuck with that terrible grey hard plastic for a long time and it looks like this might be changed?

I don't think Nintendo is willing to give up on motion controls that easily. It's kinda the only thing that let them recover this past generation.

Might as well have kept the same button layout as the 360 controller so people don't get confused during QTEs.
Stuff like this just makes it feel like everyone wants the same exact controller. Plus they'll have people coming off of DS and 3DS anyway, and little quirks like that give some individuality. I'm sure the colored prompts the 360 has versus uncolored here would make a difference.

ALTERNATIVELY: they worry about people getting confused and axe QTEs. This will be the best solution.

Why can you buy multiple controllers on any console? Multiplayer.

Logic fails when people look for problems.

The only failure is creating an extra pad because you can't get more than one of your primary pad to work on the console.

I don't like Nintendo's philosophy with controllers on the Wii U so far. Just throwing all this shit at a wall and see what sticks. Try to please everyone, end up pleasing no one. They should've stuck with the Wiimote.

Except all of their sticks since Gamecube have been rubberized?

These look similar to the sticks on the Nunchuk or Classic Controller (Pro), just a little bit bigger and they smoothly in a circle instead of having the weird 8-way bumps and octagonal gate.

Or just take your 360 controller and emulate the stick placement with your thumb. It feels good.

This certainly didn't please me.

You'd rather Nintendo not give the option to do multiplayer? Or would you prefer they not have the GamePad?

I'm confused as to why you're upset.
