Wii U Speculation Thread 2: Can't take anymore of this!!!

I tried to write a list of what I'm expecting Nintendo to present on stage at E3, but I couldn't nail anything down. All of their internal teams are working on something, and they've got 3rd parties gagged within an inch of their lives. Nintendo's got so much to show this year that, even if they try to be conservative as usual, I don't think they'll be able to squeeze it all into their typical 90 minute format.

A Iwata said at the investors meeting that Nintendo really wants to wow everyone this E3. So I think they're going to try to talk about everything they conceivably can to ramp up hype for the Wii U (and maintain hype for the 3DS).

I dunno, I'm expecting a showing unlike anything we've seen from Nintendo in years. All signs point to it. I might have people over.

Vodka + shot glasses + mom's garlic hot wings recipe = BRING IT, NINTENDO.

These sound delicious.

But yeah, I think we're in for something special from Nintendo this year. I kind of wish my hype levels weren't already this high in February, but that's how it goes.

My prediction for E3: Gabe Newell appears on the stage alonside Satoru Iwata to unveil Half Life 3, then a 30 seconds teaser of real gameplay running on Wii U, the internet explodes, the pad controller by itself will automatically start to print money.

That would be my wet dream indeed as well and I've been thinking about a HL3 release on WiiU myself since last E3; in fact if Nintendo should settle an agreement with Valve and supply the WiiU with adequate tech specifics as to comply with HL's new engine's hardware requirements, well, that would be one of those smart moves they should make in order to gain the general attention and praise, at least for what concerns the Western market(for Japan maybe they should need to announce another big IP iteration).

It'll be interesting to see how the first 3rd party games will look like on WiiU. For example if GTA5 is going to get announced for WiiU, will Rockstar push its graphics? I doubt it as it will hurt PS3/360 version sales.

Hey guys I'm new to the Gaf but I've been watching this thread since the first speculation thread and I would like to say thank you guys for making the wait for E3 all the more enjoyable and here['s hoping I can contribute to the conversation without sounding/looking like a complete noob.

Well, if you've been following these threads, then you should be just fine.
Welcome to GAF!

Hurt PS3 and XBox360's sales?
I don't think so.

PS3 and X360 have a steady solid userbase, so WiiU's versions are bound to sell less, at least as in its early months it will probably start slowly.

The real question is, how much effort third-parties are going to put in upgrading PS360 multiplatforms if they could easily get away with a just slightly improved port?
For sure, in the cases when a PC version is expected, WiiU's one could be allegedly based on that rather than PS360's ones.

As for GTA5, either way a WiiU version - provided they are actually going to announce it - would take advantage of WiiU tablet, for example to take the hud and the map off the TV screen.

Also, try imagine switching radio channels and adjusting volume from the tablet(with music coming off Utablet's speakers).

Much potential in it.

Talking about putting everything from the GTA HUD really makes me hope that developers give us the option of what we want on the TV and what we want on the Wii U controller. For instance, I think having the map up on the TV would be better than having it on the controller since you need to look at that all the time when driving around. Ammo and health could go on the controller though since you don't need to look at those as often.

Hopefully they give us the option of switching their locations by just tapping a button on the screen or something.

That sounds pretty reasonable, a customizable HUD would be nice.

Most third-parties don't want to have to try anything they be happy if everything was the same, and that why Sony and MS cant try something like this they need a strong first party like Big N

but doing so put third-parties off from trying

Leave, leave now whilst you can! This thread is just a downward spiral into insanity... :(

That was the intent. It's rather effective I see. :)

^ You know you like the new one Ubermatik. And that video is awesome yes?
There's no way I would let my kids watch that if I had any.

I was nearly there, as they're both children TV shows!

It had been so long seen I captured those pictures (I have three others), that I couldn't remember the name and thought you were correct.

So enough about me (it's really always about me ;) ). I think the 3DS will get a max of 45 minutes (probably less) of E3 time while Wii U gets the majority. They have to boast about all the money hatting they did.

I'd rather have E3 2010 2.0. That conference had everything. "Oh hey guys, so here's some games you might want to play on Wii and DS. Oh yeah, about that 3DS thing: here's an IP you haven't seen in 19 years and a bunch of games that will arrive on the system. So, we cool again?"

Allthough E3 '12 will be different. Starting with some 3DS software and quickly to reintroducing the Wii U. And all of the games.

I´m expecting something in line with E3 2006, where they started with Miyamoto on stage "directing" Wii Music and it was about Wii for 35-40 minutes before they talked about DS for 15 minutes. Last 10-15 minutes was back to Wii again to finish of the press conference. Ending was playing Wii tennis Reggie, Miyamoto, Iwata and some dude.

Yes, we may see something, although I'm not expecting it to be a launch title, as they'll probably wait till the userbase grows to a decent level.

I think the western version of DQX will probably launch simultaneously across Wii and Wii U. Userbase shouldn't be much of a worry with the Wii version backing things up.

I also don't expect it until 2013 though. For 2012 I'm just hoping for DQ I•II•III Anniversary and Slime Morimori 3. Then DQX and DQM3D in 2013.

It would be a good Japanese launch title if its paired with some other games to make people choose the Wii U version over the Wii one

I think they will scrap the tablet idea and instead let the world witness the return of the almighty "NEW POWERGLOVE" (with integrated vitality sensor and force feedback) :)

I don't think it would make sense for the sake of pacing to begin with the Wii U re-unveiling.

We already know about it, but that's the brand new stuff, keep it for last, keep the best for last.

I'd be surprised to see it on Wii in the West. I see them focusing on the Wii U version only for NA and Europe.

Minority Report future confirmed.

I don't know whether this is old or the right place to post this, but I want the next Zelda to look like this:
fanmade Zelda trailer
It's a nice creation, I'd like to know what software he uses (I reckon Autodesk Maya). Also kinda neat he works for Big Park Studios (Kinect Joy Ride, Kinect Sports Season 2). He oughta join NST or Retro, as a stepping stone, if he likes The Legend of Zelda that much. But regarding the trailer I can say I found the shading a bit off (0:20), but otherwise it's impressive and an art style like that would certainly suffice to me at least. We know though what happened due to the procrastination of a "real" The Legend of Zelda (in comparison to The Wind Waker), so Nintendo might not want to go all in on such an idea again.

Oh, I'm totally OK with this! Either a Zelda Windwaker style or another Skyward Sword style would make me very happy.

I think an improved SS style would fit a Wii U Zelda most. Imagine, no jaggies, even more details and a world as huge as Xenoblade's...

Maya with toon shaders, After Effects for integrating some of the effects and Photoshop for the texture work/static backgrounds etc.

*EDIT* ^ Yeah, same - Toon Link has found his home on handhelds as of late and I really think Nintendo could show off the power of the Wii U with a gorgeous, HD, realistic Zelda. Can't wait, to be honest.

Yeah, I do believe so. I wish they'd turn away from the OoT art work though, which has been present in every "realistic" Zelda + SS since, but that's just me.

Anouma has said that Zelda Wii U won't use the same art style as Skyward Sword. He also said the new 3DS Zelda won't be connected to the DS Zelda games, so toon link likely won't return for the next games.

They seriously can't have U be their "Super" or "64" tag for generational games on this console. Mario U, Zelda U, it all sounds terrible. Like a 90s rap rock band.

When has Zelda ever taken the generational tag? Heck 3D Mario games haven't used the generational tag since the first 3D Mario. (Mind you, Gamecube didn't have a tag)

Point is, I expect U to only be used on games like Wii Sports and such.

They weren't really concrete examples. Even on non-generational games which we can't know the name of yet, I can not think of a single case where U wouldn't sound awful.

U Music.

It sends off vibes of low-budget ripoffs with their own not-quite-Mii systems for Wii this gen.

I can agree that U Sports and U Music would be terrible titles. Then again I'm still hoping that Wii U won't be the final console name. Still, I wouldn't care in the end since it wouldn't be the games I would actually buy that would have U in the title.

I'm confident that Wii U isn't the final name. Not after Nintendo has spent months saying they've regretted naming their new handheld "3DS" because it only confused customers.

I can't remember their specific wording on their Dolphin/Revolution naming wherever it was that they announced those consoles. Did they say from the very beginning that they were only codenames? Because if they did that'd be all the bigger reason to think the name's going to be changed.

When did they say this?

The code name for Wii U was Project Café.
