Wii U Speculation thread IV: Photoshop rumors and image memes

That basic math is why Sony and Microsoft were willing to lose hundreds of dollars per console initially, and it has proven to be a solid investment for both companies in the long run. Nintendo has had the luxury in the past of not having to make that investment, but if there was ever a time to do so, it's now. Nintendo could even make it more dramatic: Price the Wii U at $199, drop the Wii to $99, and watch Sony and Microsoft squirm as they try to match those prices.

There are some other interesting points there.

Too late, I'm already living a lie and prefer to stay that way! ;)

I don't know what could prevent them to include this dynamic power allocation method though, it's the perfect application thanks to the asymmetrical setting of the Wii U. Hey Nintendo, hire me, i have other ideas ! And i would cook some nice french pastries during our breaks !

Hmm. Well, it's not like they have to process the picture within a single frame. And it basically only has to figure out where the two darkish circles in oval light-ish circles are located (the closer they are to the center of the camera image, the lower you're head is tilted). So I suppose it wouldn't be too bad. I only brought up the potential for resource usage because this processing probably uses the cpu, which is not a particularly strong point of the Wii U, given current speculation.

Yeah it would certainly use the CPU, and i'm sure it will be fine, if the small 100ish Mhz ARM processors of the DSi (and from my memories, other less powerful electronic devices have such eye-tracking features) can handle this.

My major complaint is that this capability is useless if (A) you are playing a multi player game with friends, or (B) you have friends over who are watching you play a single player game.

edit: you're right, if face tracking is doable on the 3DS, it should be easy to do with minimal resources on the at-least-slightly-faster Wii U.

I really wonder how the very same journalist can change his mind (a U-turn? :-P) on the same subject in less than 3 weeks:

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articl...ess-powerful-than-ps3-xbox-360-developers-say
(don't worry about the article title, it's the analysis inside that's *quite* different from the one that went online today)

The earlier article seems to be saying "Here are some problems that may make the Wii U not succeed". The followup article seems to be saying "Nintendo has enough money to overcome any problems that may make the Wii U not succeed". I admit that I skimmed both, but the two basic assertions do not seem to conflict.

I would make it so it "clicks" into diffrent positions and stays that way.

I dont´t think your "Too many moving parts" argument does apply here.

Hey hey hey, not my argument (in fact I think it's somewhat ridiculous). Just imagining what would go through the crazy minds of Iwata and co. hehe. Nintendo have had issues w/ hinges in the past (DS lite hinges cracked for no apparent reason). I think it would be cool, though I'd rather just have two cameras. :)

Yeah, this method can't apply to every scenario and works the best for single player play, but it allows games to have an intricate, intensive use of both screens, and avoid the situation where a developer can decide "ok, i want a beautiful content on the TV, so i'll not render anything substantial other than a 2D inventory on the padlet to free (let's summarize it this way even if it's more complex than that) the capabilities used for a 0,9x 480p content (not 1x because calculating & streaming a 2D map with updated positions of your characters must take some resources) for the main screen".

An approach to have the best of both world, the two screens involved (because sacrificing the DRC to get a more impressive content on the TV could be a gameplay waste in a lot of titles) & the maximum of the guts allocated to the display you're actually focusing at.

Maybe it's just me, but reading the two articles one after another seems... weird, to say the least.

Let's look at the following example.

Newer article:
The Wii U's strategy for success is simple. It's value.

Think abut it. The raw power of a console is not the most important thing, it's price performance and the total value of the package to the user. [...] What if Nintendo were to price the Wii U at $249, or even $199? This would instantly change the battle for console leadership. Microsoft and Sony would have a huge problem trying to meet that sort of price even with their current consoles; for their next-gen consoles, forget it.

Older article:
The key issue of console price versus performance is definitely a difficult one for Nintendo. Unless they can price the Wii U very low, Microsoft and Sony will probably be able to price their consoles below the Wii U, and they may well want to do that in the Wii U's first holiday selling season. Will Nintendo be able to convince hard-core gamers to buy the Wii U if it offers somewhat less power at a higher price?

Yes, but it's limited to the foreveralone use case. On Nintendo systems, that use case is typically less common than on other systems.

So.. NoA is tweeting for us to stay tuned tonight.. very interesting. I wonder what it could be..

Wait, so Japan and Euroland both explicitly said "Hey, there's a Nintendo Direct Conference tonight!", but the Nintendo of Reggerica just vaguely hinted at us? What, do they think the Internet stops when you reach the shoreline??

It's times like these where they really, truly puzzle me.

Those two snippets kind of agree. One says "Unless Nintendo can price it very low, the competition could beat them in price". The other says "We now know that Nintendo can price it very low".

OYG, maybe they're releasing all the titles that were translated into English for the UK but never brought to America for mysterious reasons, to America! Hype. HYYYYYPE!

yeah, they're just going to email a link to the Nintendo Direct and say "Hey, aren't you surprised???"

Hahahaha, their teasing truly knows no bounds.

They are the best (read: cruelest) in the business at what they do. I mean, MS and Sony tend not to tease.. they just say, "hey dudes! Like, we got, like, some stuff for y'alls broskis to enjoy and stuff! Totally radical awesome! Check it out!"
(it's a parody. I have a Nintendorks version as well.)

Yet their cruelty only stokes the flames of hype. Already, I've got in the back of my mind, "What if they really do have something to announce?"

Btw, love the new avatar. :)

Nintendo Indirect

Haha, spot on.

That's just natural selection. We've evolved to survive the soul-crushing attacks of NoA. Nintendo fans who couldn't cope are now… I dunno, they're probably bronies or something.

So.. how much time left till this Nintendo Direct?
I'm afraid I won't be here cuz my girl wants to see Titanic 3D and I'm being dragged :(

Oh my god! You get the FOUR HOUR torture? What did you do to to your girl to get this hellish punishment?

Kate Winslets boobs are more interesting than the whole flick

Bring your 3DS just in case. Anyone ever tried viewing the 3DS while wearing 3D glasses? Does that make it 6D or something?

Only using Sony math.

Damnit, Kaz, PS3 is two dimensional, PS3 on 3D TVs is three dimensional, 3 accelerometers plus 3 gyros is three dimensional, 3 accelerometers plus 3 gyros plus 3 magnetometers is three dimensional, not -- respectively -- 4D, 4D, 6D, and 9D!

If she thinks anything like my gf, this thread could very well have something to do w/ it.

Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out the whole 6-axis thing. Does it really hold an advantage over the Wii Remote +?

Yes, definitely sneak to the back of the theater and strategize your sexytime to coincide with the hot sweaty action in the movie.

I will be like... I'm going to the bathroom, babe, brb
*watches conference and post on GAF from the toilet eating popcorns*

About eight and a half hours. noon Japan Time, 11pm EST, 8pm PST.

Oh shit!!!
you guys have fun for me =/

She still believes the guy will make it... you never know lol
boobs in 3D...that's the best I can hope for

Hmm. A "proper" RPG on Wii U.

Person with the DRC is the dungeon master, draws up locales and battle areas, writes up character bios, flicks previously-created characters onto the main screen. Up to 4 (8?) players use remote/nunchuk (or sixth-gen controller) to control their individual player, though some of the game play involves direct interaction with the DM, who still decides their fates with the DRC.

bonus would be haptic dice rolling, damnit!

edit: I just realized that this would probably be the first RPG ever released for a home console. All the other titles using this term have just been action adventures with stats and no actual role playing!

Copulation in greasy movie theater seats together with sticky floor and popcorn flinging teenagers isn't as nice as it sounds. Besides, bringing video recording equipment to a film screening and using it isn't a very good idea. I don't know what legislation for such is in other countries, but here in Sweden you have to pay heavy fines and authorities may even confiscate the equipment. There's also imprisonment if the crime is found too severe.

They're apparently plotting sexytime/boringtime management intertwined with Nintendo PR consumption. I applaud their efforts!

Hopefully, he isn't following live-tweets on his cell phone during the wrong parts of the movie.

"I'll never let go!"
*lets go...dude dies*
WOOHOO, NEW MARIO KART!!!!

And unfortunately, it's Titanic. The men will be paying attention to anything but the movie, be it the women, or anything else going-on..

Pfff, I liked Titanic. It was technically brilliant and had just the right level of emotional manipulation of the audience. Plus the scene with the mother reading to her children was all BUHHHHHHH D: D: D:

4D
Haptic technology
Full HD
Improved physics

*gamer happy* :O

Not just HD. Retinal display! That's next gen, baby!

Still, they need to port to real life that code snippet that involves easy duplication of character models with different hairstyles.

(I'm going to try to lean more on-topic after this post)

Don't forget 3x-4x higher quality moans.

Yes, this has gone far enough

You guys are sick... :P
I just noticed how flawless my English was on my previous posts... meh =/

I'd rather Endless Ocean 3, where I can explore the ruins.. if it weren't for the pressure.

Endless Ocean 3 needs to happen. If they can get the Vitality Sensor functional in time, all the better. Your state of relaxation could affect your oxygen supply, etc. Would be great before bedtime.

This is propably the official bootup screen for the WiiU.

This Image... in Full HD... on 50" :D

You sonofa, I was gonna post this exact thing! Great minds, etc etc.
