Wii U Speculation thread IV: Photoshop rumors and image memes

What if in Japan, Nintendo sets up an infrastructure where they establish “Wii U Server systems” (capable of streaming to multiple controllers) in transit systems and other applicable public places. These would be capable of streaming video services, e-shop titles, demos and 1 or 2 featured games (Monster Hunter), that people could connect their Wii U controllers to and play (providing they had pre-existing save data). Making it a tethered portable if you would. Similarly, they could transmit to Wii U compatible NFC “tokens” to download content to users that they can unlock once at home (Pokemon, etc). I know it’s unlikely, but it seems like a way to really push the system’s popularity in Japan.

People act like we've had a Wii, nWii, Wii Betta, and Wii XL so that by the time Wii U comes out it'll be confusing if Wii U is finally the next one. Hint: those never happened.

That was my original stance, but I think because we had the Wii Zapper, Wii Speak, Wii Balance Board, Wii Motion Plus, WiiMote Plus

People may confuse it with a peripheral for the Wii

The way I see it... IGN are always wrong.

They thought the 3DS needed two sticks - it didn't
They thought the Vita was set to succeed - it didn't
They think the Wii U needs a name change.....

In their defense, I still think this would have been a positive thing, and clearly so did certain developers.

Yup. "Wii" classic is HTML #999999 while "Wii" U is #8b8b8b.

solution: redesign the Wii logo with the i's as bullets, dotted with blood spatters

Hey, Ubisoft, if you're lurking, you should totally "borrow" this idea for one of the commercials for the hardcore exclusive you're undoubtedly bringing to the WiiU.

Not Rayman 2.

playing Kid Icarus, it definitely would have benefited with another stick. The game is unplayable for me without the stand.

Since I skimmed through some pages, was this posted a couple days ago?

How have you been able to utilise the Wii-U's unique features for Ghost Recon Online?

Our focus has been entirely on delivering a great launch on PC. Achieving that has been an all-hands-on-deck effort for the team this year. We're looking forward to seeing what we can do on other platforms like Wii-U once we're on solid ground with the PC launch. So no specific update for now, sorry!

So if this wasn't demoed at E3, would this be lumped in with games like Crysis 3, Epic Mickey 2, Tomb Raider, etc?

Of course, they could always just relent and call it Wii 2 with minimal damage. They could even tie in the fact that they (hopefully) get 2 tablets operational in some titles. I don't buy into the argument that people would think less of it next to a higher numerical PS4. If anything, consumers are weary of the trend that the more numerical sequels = the more decline in quality...which is why Wii U is probably the best choice.

I don't think the bolded applies beyond movie titles, honestly. iPad 2 begs to differ.

I honestly think it would be, since noone can say anything they always have to answer with either "we're not doing it at this point" or "we haven't considered it because *insert any reason here*". And people interpret those in different ways.

Basically at this point it's best to wait until E3, and just as one example that might encourage optimism for the games you mentioned possibly coming to Wii U, Warren Spector was in the developer video at Nintendo's E3 conference last year talking about Wii U, so we know they've got dev kits but may not have been ready to announce EM 2 then. Considering the apparent ease of porting from the 360 to the U, it would be surprising if they didn't do so after at least a year, but they have to deny a Wii U version either way as they would be under NDAs.

I understand your opinions. I do fear that "U" as a "modifier" isn't really describing something new or advanced, like um, "Advance" did with the Gameboy line, though. GBA didn't have that name problem, but that was before Nintendo started with all the SPs, XLs, Lites, etc. etc. I can see how an uninformed consumer would be confused by 3DS, though I wouldn't have predicted it at the time... And as was said, 3DS had its own problems before it caught it's stride so it wasn't just the name.

Keep in mind too that tons of Wii games have used Wii in the title with a "modifier." Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Music, Wii Party, etc etc. Not to mention hardware components like Wii Sensor Bar, Wii Remote, Wii Balance Board and so on. So it's understandable that some people are thinking the Wii U is some tablet controller coming out for their Wii. Anyone on NeoGAF wouldn't have the problem distinguishing, but a soccer mom or Average Joe might get confused.

The Gameboy name was very valuable when Nintendo switched gears in calling the DS the DS. So "Nintendo U" still isn't out of the question and hey, I like it. I don't know that it's really going to be a big deal if they stick with "Wii U" but I see the problem. Hopefully they work on the logo more and launching in black (or that silver mockup) might not be a bad move either.
