Wii U Speculation Thread of Brains Beware: Wii U Re-Unveiling At E3 2012

I like how the tech demo looked of Zelda. Just make a whole game with those graphics and that's enough to make people cream. That was just some indoor scene. Imagine the beautiful fields and outdoors and dungeons and all that. Ohhh gwawadd.

Nintendo did such amazing work on the character designs in SS. The Link and Zelda models wouldn't look out of place in high-profile HD games (except for the fact that they're not bald space marines), really great.

We've seen very little unique artstyles on the PS3 and 360 for high profile games. Only Rayman Origins, PoP 2008 and LittleBigPlanet come to mind. I'm really looking forward to what Nintendo is going to do with that new power. High-profile realistic graphics aren't necessary for most Nintendo games, so I hope the teams that did Skyward Sword and Kirby Epic Yarn get really creative with all the new stuff they can do.
Shulk will be a Europe and Japan exclusive.
Hehe.

Yeah, I doubt Shulk will make it in. I do think Captain Rainbow should be in, though. Would be cool.

And yes, I'd literally do anything for Travis to be in the best Smash.

Let's hope F-Zero isn't dead for consoles, and maybe that they got the Sega team that did GX together again. They did such a good job.

F-Zero GX is simply the best racing game of all time. Nothing else even comes close.

Not sure about Shulk, but Riki would fit in pretty well w/ the smash bros world. Majority of the playerbase would be wondering why kirby's suddenly wielding a bone hammer, however.

If Nintendo offered cross-game video chat, would any of you use it?

Unlikely. I don't have that many gamer friends, and we tend to single player game mostly.

That said, having the feature to be able to chat via the OS and ring a friend could be useful for just getting in contact with someone if you needed to. Regardless of whether you were gaming or not.

That Xbox using DVD9 thread just made me realize (and appreciate) that Nintendo unveiled details about the game discs being used for Wii U early. 25GB of space is quite the forward thinking design and I'm surprised it took a recent thread like that to make me really appreciate what that meant in combination with what we're slowly beginning to meet a mutual understanding of in terms of the console's tech.

I'm also finding it harder and harder to believe that this can't constitute a generational leap even though I know what most people mean when they say it. It just sounds more and more like a pretty well done design for a "half-step", like it's the HD console that would have been if MS & Sony didn't have their design holes they fell in.*

All of this also comes with a decidedly more modern approach to its internals.

*360 having 10MB EDRAM, PS3's "strange" cell architecture, memory issues, both's anemic GPUs for 1080p -- MS gets a pass since the GPU was really something for the time and the aforementioned framebuffer ram was what capped it's overall potential, both of their high prices

As for Cross Game Video Chat, isn't that pretty much confirmed between the inital rumors of the system "streaming" footage of the game being played by a friend in an effort to "advertise" the experience to onlookers (one of the earliest rumors of Wii U from it's Cafe days was an ability to do something like this and join games seamlessly from this) and the actual demo reel showing video chat on the Wii U controller? I personally don't know what I could do with video chat like that, but I appreciate the potential it has and know that it'll mean a lot for community, something Nintendo still struggles with from time to time.

The part when the guy launch the parrot video to the TV while people is seeing something on Youtube, make me think that WiiU could be able for example to leave an app in standby while open a new one, of course that segment could be just an example, and not really to be implemented the way I'm thinking.

It is a bit of a half-step, like the dreamcast was over say, the n64. Having said that, that was a pretty big half-step.

It is a bit of a half-step, like the dreamcast was over say, the n64. Having said that, that was a pretty big half-step.

Keep in mind I'm not taking into account architectural differences, of which I know nothing, but going by wikipedia the dreamcast had roughly 2x the cpu and gpu clock speeds and 3x the ram of the N64. Though the biggest bottleneck on the 64 appears to be the 250 MB/s memory bus.

The PS2 seems to be almost or roughly 2x the Dreamcast.

The 360 appears to be more than 5-6x the Wii.

So yeah, a dreamcast - PS2 gulf between the Wii U and Xbox3 would be totally fine and dandy for me

The DreamCast wasn't really just a half-step to begin with. There were some things it even did better than the PS2, unless I'm mistaken.

Wii U will likely be the first of its kind.

That's extremely conservative. Wii is barely more powerful than the XBox. The 360 is at least 10x as powerful as the Wii.

Nintendo hit the wall on DVD capacity with Other M, having to shave seconds off the cutscenes to fit it all on one disc. This was all without HD assets. Of course they would upgrade their disc format.

Now, if they never came close to hitting that wall on Wii, we'd probably be stuck with DVD capacity for another generation.

I don't see "three-quarter step" as even a remote possibility. I still have serious doubts that it will be a half-step (by what I consider a half-step).

Honestly, an Xbox 360 with a GB of Ram is almost a half step, these machines have been memory constrained for so long. The Wii U...goddammit is going to be such a beast for Nintendo games.

I agree. I really look forward to how that Nintendo franchises translate to HD and obscene amounts of textures (compared to previous consoles).

LOL. With what I expect from PS4 and Xbox3, a "three-quarter step" is well within reach. But it depends on what they do with that GPU.

well that has as much to do with what's in sony and MS's next consoles as much as what's in nintendo's.

E3 is gonna be amazing. Sony and Microsoft will probably present their new consoles, or at the very least tease it or show a prototype and we already know Nintendo will "re"reveal the Wii U. We'll see then how apart in power the 3 consoles are. Plus more 3DS goodness.

Bring on the next gen!

I think this is gonna be what happens with people's perceptions of next-gen graphics:

People will see the WiiU's graphics and say "it looks like PS3/360 stuff" and be unimpressed except by 1st party games because who won't be impressed by a 1st party Nintendo game in HD? But the reaction will be largely "eh" or negative.

Then people will see the first bullshot videos from Sony and Microsoft and say Nintendo dropped the ball again.

Then people will see real game footage from the next Sony and Microsoft consoles and realize that they look pretty much like WiiU graphics.

Then all will be right with the world.

The potential is so damn ridonculous. And I'm super excited for the controller. I'm practically salivating. I...will be sorely tempted to buy all three machines next-gen.

Anyway, I keep fantasizing about a real gritty F-Zero. I want those ships to look like they are made of metal, with charred jet nozzles, scratched paint...awesome shader effects everywhere. Sigh.

You must have missed the Dreamcast - PS2 comparison era. Here's what will really happen:

Then pixel counting comparisons between different versions of Dead or Alive will continue for 5 years until one of the systems becomes non-viable or defunct, and even then the losing side will insist that they were right all along.

Criterion could pull that off. *HINT HINT NINTENDO* If Team Ninja can make a Metroid game, then Criterion can make a F-Zero game, damn it!

It will definitely trample all over E3 '11. I'm really looking forward to next year's E3.

My current budget will keep me in check. Probably so much so that I hope I'll have enough for Wii U.

Not just F-Zero, but this as well.

The Galaxy series is so ridiculously better looking than anything else on Wii. Sure, the locales are designed in such a way that the entire systems resources are just on that creature, and with the Wii U, you could have vast areas with everything being that good looking (well, even better looking).

Anyway, this generation was the Wii and the HD Twins. Will the next generation just be the HD Triplets? I see Sony being wounded this generation, the ocean was reddened with their blood. Will there be three competitors or will one be forced to bow out?

Galaxy is #1 to me as well, but Xenoblade and Last Story aren't slouches either IMO.

*Still believes at least Xenoblade gets an HD remake and release for Wii U in NA*

^_^

Sony is definitely about to experience there "Gamecube". I look forward to seeing how they turn it around.

And look what I found. Someone made a video of their top 10 Wii games based on graphics. It really shows to me that while Wii's hardware was limited, some didn't put forth much effort.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0a2rHtE9WsA

They don't have SMG #1 though and they chose the wrong RE game IMO. If Twilight Princess made it then so should RE4.

Man...I have mixed feelings on Monster Hunter 3, fantastic art-design, tiny areas...you load into another shoe box every 10 feet.

I was reading up on how great the online features are for MK 7. Nintendo surely needs to build all of this into the Wii U, because it sounds like they've finally figured it out and are doing it very well with that game.

.

Looking forward to the Wind Waker sequel with no textures whatsoever.

A lot of Nintendo's first party games don't really need heavy texturing. Although Mario galaxy had some really nice fur effects

Ya know, its really true honestly. I remember making some posts back during e3 about what franchises would benefit most from the new hardware. This is why I keep mentioning F-Zero, seems like a game where you can really show off some texturing.

I can imagine GAF making those stupid "jump ship" threads all over again. Hivemind really can be a headache.

AMD engineers: "And with the advanced unified shaders, you can now apply POM and SSAO to your textures, and it supports up to 2kx2k texture, normal and detail maps"

Nintendo developer: "wow, sounds good. Just a quick clarification - whats a 'texture'? "

edit: Although Pikmin was one of the most amazing looking games I'd seen at the time. Pikmin 3 with stereo 3D support, with super texturing would be amazing.

I'm with you; Wii U is going to explode heads just because we'll finally get Nintendo titles in HD. Add in the 3rd parties and the fact it's going to obviously outshine the 360/PS3 and it will be great for us. The controller, if marketed and implemented right should also pull in the mainstream and casual market too. I see a good future ahead for Nintendo. Maybe not Wii and DS levels, but really solid.

My budget only allows for one console, and Wii U will be it.

Honestly, Nintendo can still make a gorgeous game using GCN era tech. Last fight in Skyward Sword makes me wonder what Nintendo's devs can do with new era tech.

And I have a feeling it will be the closest to Pixar gaming has come yet.
