Everything we've read about all the next systems conclude that the Wii U will be technically inferior of the three. They can possibly increase things like the clock speed and ram to help give it some longevity, but it just begs the question of why they didn't think ahead.
As long as they wanted to beat the others to the market by 1-2 years, not being technically inferior would take a miracle.

They should call it Nintendo Nintendo Nintendo Nintendo Nintendo Nintendo. That will make it obvious it's Nintendo's 6th home console, it has the recognizable brand name and there is no way it will be mistaken for Wii.
Throw "Buffalo" in there a few times and we have a winner.

Yes, GB's box was awesome, but it would be off-putting to the mainstream toady. Hell, the culsterfuck that it is the current Wii box is probably off-putting.

Ignoring the 3 or 4 home consoles Nintendo made before the NES, anyways.

Even the eShop is worlds different from WiiWare.
The Let's Golf game just released in the 3DS shop is 200 MB. The maximum size for WiiWare is 40 MB. It's a whole new world. I just wish you could buy the amount of store credit you need rather than being forced to have unusable leftover credit. Really annoys me, in fact.

If anything for WiiU-Ware, Nintendo needs to raise the cap to at least 800mb, if not 2GB. It would free up a lot of potential for all kinds of DD games. A 40mb cap on Wii was just unrealistic and foolish, they could have easily made it a 200mb cap.

Yeah. Its even worse to navigate.

Have you ever tried to fit a 5-gallon jug of milk in a fridge?

Can't say I have...

The Wii's internal flash could handle it, it's just that it would require a certain amount of space to be available. Obviously there's issues with saves, and VC/WiiWare taking up that space but they could have made that space a requirement for certain WiiWare. A 150-200MB limit could have been viable for some cases, a 40MB limit just didn't make sense.

1 game in the fridge then delete to download the next or delete/copy from SD to play a new game, not all of the 512MB internal flash was usable by users, only half.

So you think a 40meg cap was the best alternative?

And sure, I never said it wouldn't be a rigid fit. But if all VC/WiiWare was stored on SD, a 150meg game would have fit within the 256 available. My point was, a 40mb limit was far too low for any high production DD/DLC to be taken seriously. Games like World of Goo stressed the boundary of the 40mb limit, and games like Super Meat Boy were cut entirely because of it. 90% of the DD on PSN/XBL wouldn't fit within 40mb...

No, maybe allow for some bigger games but 200MB would be way to much, sub 100MB when the internal flash is so small is a good way to go.

I hope they change the name. Likelihood?

Since then, we've had Mario kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land. ie It sounds like Nintendo at the convention of silly names.

So, what do you think?!?!

PS: as indicated above that 3DS eshop really is terrible. WiiWare brims with usability compared to this.

The Wii shop is a bad website with really crap custom javascript and CSS going on... not to mention the terrible downloading bar solution of irritating coin noises at 99% complete. The loading times are absolutely terrible on every page.

In those regards the 3DS solution is much much better. The main thing the 3DS eShop needs is a quick-to-access means of filtering and searching the store. Its there, but its not intuitive, it loads up highlighting the prime showcased title and you've got to go several menu options to the left to find the search options, or click through menu options to get there. It should be easier / more prominent than that. I'm fine with them showcasing titles the way they are, but there should be a simple pop up menu system or something for browsing by Virtual Console system, price, genre, publisher etc. I've no doubt that they will actually improve it.

edit: I do wish Nintendo would just hire people who know how to make nice UIs though.

As for the name of Wii-U, I'm all for them changing it if they can think of something better -- but as you point out, given their track record lately, I'm not sure I trust them to do that. If the marketing is right first time Wii-U might be alright... its taken them a while to realise that their branding and marketing was confusing on 3DS.

Or you know a real fix, direct booting from SD without copying it to nand FIRST. If pirates can do it so does Nintendo.

In PAL Land the prices are round. 2.00€, 5.00€ etc. So it's a region thing.

Save for the loading pages which is a minor nuisance, I've never had a problem with using WiiWare or VC. It might be barebones but that's just how I like it (I don't care how it's constructed behind the scenes). At least you can do searches and categorise games by publisher and system. I don't even mind entering Credit Card info each time I make a purchase because I don't want my CC details stored online (though I do admit the option should be there to save information for those that do).

The only issue that irks me is credit. You should be able to purchase the game rather than purchasing credit to buy the game.

I wonder if Nintendo is trying to use Wii as a brand. Some may not necessarily equate Sony with PlayStation or Microsoft with Xbox. Perhaps Nintendo wants that with the Wii name?

The creator of Super Mario Land 3D says he must start narrowing down his ideas.

Yoshiaki Koizumi, the director of Super Mario Land 3D, has revealed he has too many ideas for making Super Mario games on Wii U, to the point that he has to work out which are worth pursuing.

Yoshiaki Koizumi said:
"As it turns out, I have too many ideas at the moment for Mario games on Wii U," Koizumi told Official Nintendo Magazine. "I'm going to have to start narrowing them down and thinking about which ideas might work well together so that the whole system will be an enjoyable experience rather than a hodgepodge of ideas."

New Super Mario Bros. Mii was shown at E3, but the platform holder stressed this is merely a concept demo to highlight what can be achieved on Wii U.

What would you like Nintendo to do with Super Mario on Wii U?

A return to the mushroom kingdom in glorious hd. Cape feather power-up also back. Nov.15, 2013. Believe

EDIT: Oh yeah, this time, none of this kidnapping Peach BS. This time, Bowser ain't effin' around.

As much as I hate the idea of paid DLC, Nintendo's willingness to want provide such features to third-parties can only be a good thing. However, I'm glad that Nintendo still believes that DLC from its own games should remain free. Greedy publishers have caused enough damage by abusing DLC for unnecessary micro transactions, even on the Wii.

Now if only Nintendo can fix the Wiiware/Virtual console transaction system.

Slim to none.

I suspect a different marketing approach though

I totally knew the answer, but I don't like hearing it. Hopefully their marketing approach goes down the mature, minimal route, rather than the bouncy, over expressed vowel route.

Interview with Brain in a Jar about Wii U:

The company's made some bad PS2-to-Wii port racing games, only now they're making Jungle Kartz for Wii, we'll see if that's actually decent.
Doubtful.
I think the initial reaction of all of us here at Brain in a Jar was that Nintendo were taking a step in the wrong direction by trying to bring the Wii into the ‘next generation’ territory of PS3 and Xbox 360.

Should have stopped reading there.

I honestly have no idea how he pulled that out of his ass, that it would be a "step in the wrong direction". I mean isn't it the only natural and obvious step for Nintendo to take?

I can't make head nor tail of it....

That the Power7 rumors are bullshit and so is the 16MB eDRAM speculation.
Processor will be a multicore revision of the Wii processor with clockrates much closer to Wii than XBox360.

Wild guesses of estimated clock rate of ~1,5 GHz and clarification that despite of this the CPU could be perfectly competitve with Xenon.

So a far bit worse than some of the previous rumours have had us believe?

They say it's this CPU:

And it wouldn't surprise me at all if Nintendo didn't went all out on the CPU power, my guess is that the Wii U's strongest asset will be its GPU.
