Game Memo is reporting on a number of new features for Dragon Quest X. The site doesn't provide a source for the info, but they tend to be pretty accurate, so we can probably take their word for it.

Here's what's new in the Game Memo story:

  • The game's story will have lots of volume, with the hope that players can continue to play online for a long time.
  • Outside of story, you'll find a lot of gameplay content, as each of the game's five races have their own specific quests.
  • While it's common for online games to not have an "ending" with a "last boss," it appears that this will not apply to DQX.
  • The game's inn facility will now have a concierge. The concierge will give you info about events.
  • While the game will have auto save, you'll still be able to go to the church to pray in order to save.
  • The game will have a post office through which you can send letters and items to friends without directly meeting.
  • The game world will be many times bigger than Dragon Quest VIII's massive world.
  • Your player character is actually human, but after some sort of happening, he turns into one of the five announced races.
  • You start the game off in a small village, where you live with either your brother or sister. The game's character making feature allows you to create this family member as well.

New Controller: Approximately 5.3 inches high, 0.9 inches deep (not including buttons and other projections) and 9.0 inches long. Media: A single self-loading media bay will play 12-centimeter proprietary high-density optical discs for the new console, as well as 12-centimeter Wii optical discs.

Video Output: Supports 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i. Compatible cables include HDMI, component, S-video and composite.

Audio Output: Uses AV Multi Out connector. Six-channel PCM linear output through HDMI.

Storage: The console will have internal flash memory, as well as the option to expand its memory using either an SD memory card or an external USB hard disk drive.

CPU: IBM Power®-based multi-core microprocessor.

GPU: AMD Radeon™-based High Definition GPU.

Other: Four USB 2.0 connector slots are included. The new console is backward compatible with Wii games and Wii accessories.

I've been out of the Wii U info for a while, does this mean Wii U wont support GC controllers or GC backwards compatibility? Does the Wii U controller not have rumble support?

No, it won't support GC discs (though, it might have GC games on the eShop). Not sure if the Tablet will have rumble.

GC is removed from Wii U so they dont have to waste case space on it
 
I guess another good reason to hold onto my Wii. Really hope the Wii U controller supports Rumble. Didnt feel any at E3 :/

Thanks, but like blu indicated there isn't any discovery of cryptic specs. It's really nothing more than a hypothetical direction that Nintendo could chose.

No, it won't have GC controller and memory card ports and it won't load GC mini discs. I have no idea why that stuff can't be emulated on the Wii U, though. They have to find some workaround if they plan to sell GC titles through DD.

Two titles in North America: Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure and Shanghai 2: Dragon's Eye, both for Sega Genesis.

Plus I don't think they've ever gone two generations back. Even the DS was incompatible with any GB/GBC games, and it had a GBA slot.
 
^ As long as you can use an external HDD for Wii U they should include downloads of that size.

As much time as they have it better not be. They said it's already graphically on par with PS360 so they better be doing something with that controller. That "definitive" comment was kind of a CYA to me.

They're not still using flash memory. There's support for external harddrives.

And you truly don't think Nintendo will sell GC games through digital means on the Wii U?

I thought it was pretty obvious Nintendo wouldn't ditch their rumble tech when they were the only winners when Immersion came knocking for money.

Man I hope the next Zelda takes full advantage of the beefier hardware. I want a WOW like massive overworld with incredibly varied areas that "feel" right. Meaning, if I go to a swamp, its not like 5 feet away from a field or desert, its in some far off place on the map that takes time to travel to. I would also love huge monsters roaming the world just daring you to have a go at them, monster hunter like in that regard.

I want to help rebuild hyrule castle and have a separate mini-game involving growing your kingdom and defending it from hordes...tower defense style. Oh and throw in a sequel to cross bow training. That's it, game of the forever.

And it'll take forever to make. That would probably be a launch title for the successor of the Wii U's successor.

Actually, I can totally see that happening. Skyward Sword pushes all the limits on the Wii and they still managed to get it on the console's lifespan, so it's not farfetched to think they'll do the same for WiiU.

While we probably won't get it until the second half of the WiiU's lifespan, I can wait for an HD Zelda if Aonuma and co. decide to go all-out on it.

You don't need beefier hardware for any of that though.

HD development is much harder than Wii development. If SS took five years to make, no way what he described would take less that 7. Zelda should stick to a three-year cycle.

Nintendo development is weird, so i doubt there is anyway to know. I would take a guess and say 2 years of that where prototyping and design without the full staff during which Motion+ was developed and released. I wouldnt be surprised if early designs where scrapped in favor of the motion+ sword centric route.
