Same here. I can't see Nintendo releasing as late as September. July/August release would be appropriate, enough time to prepare for seasonal releases etc too.
Maybe they'll do an Apple: "And it's ready to buy, right now!"
Yeah, I think so too, Nintendo is playing a little being the underdog, Sony and MS knows that Wii U is going to be launch probably later next year, and BAM! new console on june.

If Nintendo were more open to Wii U information, then MS and Sony could feel some presion for next-gen, and IMO Nintendo is trying to avoid that, more room to run alone.

I'm still riding the July release bandwagon.

My initial prediction was June, either during or the week after E3. I'll still stick with that.

Nintendo also can afford to launch Wii U as both their competitors are trying to milk as much money as possible on their current gen platforms after the bloodbath they took. Sony is still in the red and will probably not get out of it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Tablet controller gets a massive redesign by next unveiling.

Im sure that Nintendo might tweak it a bit, maybe hold back a feature or two from the competition, but what sense do you mean a massive redesign, and why? I thought the general impression was that it was comfortable and nice to use.

Yeah, I can only see them tweaking a couple of things for launch, kinda like teh original Wii control vs. the final design:

They curved the B-button up, to improve ergonomics, made the controller a bit squarer, as opposed to it's initially round form, changed the on/off button, altered the lights, added a speaker and renamed the a and b buttons to 1 & 2.

Though a fairly long list, they were only slight changes.

At most, I could only think of Nintendo reducing the size of the thing, by either resizing the screen and increasing pixel density, or moving the insides in a bit? Still seems highly unlikely.

That said, it does look a little chubby at the moment. Maybe they'll remove the camera too? Would take the cost down, and having a camera pointed at your chin isn't really ideal either...

Maybe they'll tweak it so much, it makes it possible for them to sell individual controllers?

Hope so...

Every time I see the controller I cringe at the analogue pads.

Yeah, I don't believe they would remove the camera since one of the draws they seemingly want to have is live chat. Could happen though, nintendo and all...

Wtf are you talking about? Small tweaks aren't going to significantly affect the price anyway. At most they'll adjust the ergonomics once they actually have games running on it to test for long periods of play. I don't think any features are being removed

Taking the camera out would definitely reduce the cost of manufacture.

It's the most obvious feature that Nintendo would remove, if they were going to make any significant changes.

Note that I was saying this is what would happen if they made major alterations to the device - a scenario which I later claimed to be highly unlikely.

Absolutely not. Nintendo already ordered something like 60M of those 0.3Mpx in the past few years, they definitely want more :)

Seriously, this camera will not be something highter than 0.6Mpx, and if you refers to the Iwata asks about the 3DS hardware, they are saying that this doesn't cost very much at all.

Lowering the price of this thing will be very difficult. Screen and battery will be the key.

It's unlikely that Nintendo will change anything drastic about this system other than looks(which they could easily do while keeping the actual hardware the same). In fact I've been making the rounds and Nintendo of Europe still expects to roll out Wii U in the first half of 2012. I guess we'll see it again in January or so(like the 3DS), after the 3DS push and Zelda 25 anniversary marketing mumbo jumbo.

So we have your sources pointing to the first half of 2012, 01net's June rumor pointing to June (or September), and a launch title that's aiming for June.

Wii U is clearly launching in October.

Maybe I'm just being overly optimistic and wanting Nintendo to sell separate controllers! Wah.

Ah well GAF, you've proved me wrong, though I thought the cameras would be a bit higher quality if they're looking at video calls etc.

It's kinda funny that the most futuristic feature (from a Ninty perspective) on the Wii U is the video chat. There isn't even messaging on the 3DS and now we're jumping to effing live video chat?

I may be the only person on the board who absolutely loves the 3DS slide pads. These look similar.

well they do suck pretty hard.

i understand why they did it: the controller basically has to have a flat surface and analog sticks jutting out of it probably didn't feel right. this is probably their compromise between what looks marketable and what feels comfortable.

Did you read the "twilight-princess-ed" part? Yeah. Dragon Quest X? Yeah. MS were rather unspecific about Halo 4 for a reason, methinks - and didn't show a single frame of real footage either.

I don't see the analogy here. DQX will be released on Wii either before or simultaneously with the Wii U version. Wii is still apparently the lead platform. TP was announced for GC when it was being developed as a GC title. It was shown in playable form at E3 2005, with a release date of Q4 2005, because at that point, Nintendo apparently still aimed to release it for GC by the end of 2005.

You seem to be suggesting that Microsoft has flat-out lied about Halo 4 being a 360 title, solely to cover up their intentions to launch the next Xbox by the end of 2012. I don't think this is completely impossible, but nor can I think of any real precedent for it. If more credible rumors emerge that Halo 4 is for 720, or it hasn't been revealed as of early next year, I'll be more inclined to believe that this is the case. But for now, I'm not buying it.

I really hope you'll still be able to use the nunchuck/remote combo for future games as well.

I don't want to play my donkey kong country sequel with this thing. I gotta feel the monkey rage! (drumming like a gorilla).

Yeah, Dragon Quest X-ed should be a more appropriate term, depending on how that turns out.
As far as I remember, they announce it as a new 'trilogy for the XBox 360.' Which just sounds ridiculous taken at face value.

If anything they should add another on the back for AR shit mang.

I'd forgotten about this but I think my old speculation about the controller having a Wii-like IR camera built behind the top edge was basically unconfirmed by Nitendo wasn't it? It just has a normal IR port for some reason. (Third stick add on?)

S: Do you have a Wii U development kit yet? Are you thinking about moving on to that platform?

YN: I don’t have a development kit right now. [Laughs.] Please ask Nintendo to send me one! Or maybe Bandai Namco Games can send me one. I would really like a chance to play with that hardware. Right now there probably aren’t many development kits.
So looks like Yuki Naka doesn't have a Development Kit, but Namco Bandai does.

Whatever happened to the old Nintendo? Who were all about functionality first, aesthetics second...

When it comes to analogs Nintendo has always been different though. They seem to have their own ideas about how analogs should be used/designed. Does the classic controller have R3 L3?

Nope. Which would be a problem when porting COD, I think.

I'm hoping for this and more Classic support in first party games. I mean, honestly, you could easily play New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Donkey Kong Country Returns without "waggle". It really should be an option. It's just stubborn and lazy that they didn't bother, in my view.

I hope they pack a damned Wiimote and nunchuck in there for third party support. Losing the Wiimote is certainly not going to make me buy their console on day one.

if it was for a wiiremote, wouldn't they put it on the fact of the controller so it may be used in junction with the screen on the controller?

(Wii U does have a sensor bar of its own for the tv anyway)

That's what I'm expecting too. Windows 8 will also be an important part of the future Xbox strategy and Ballmer is crazy enough to roll everything out at once.

I can totally see Windows 8, WP8 and Nextbox all at once with several unifying features, if not sharing a large amount of code. That's always been the endgame for MS's "3 screen strategy".

All of them could run Metro Apps and the dashboard, just split on the desktop/mobile/gaming applications.

Oh great, more "old Nintendo" bullshit. :/

They haven't gone anywhere. The way that the controller is shaped and designed, sticks would be a lot less comfortable unless they were recessed, and if they're recessed it'll make it easier for dust to get in.

You guys haven't even tried them yet. Isn't it a bit early to write them off as awful or dysfunctional?

I don't own a 3DS, but I've played a few minutes of StarFox and I found the circle pads to be immediately jarring since I'm so used to sticks. That said I only played for about 5 minutes, and by the end of it the controls didn't seem quite as awkward.

Its so amazing how the human body and mind can adapt to new things... its almost as if, we were built to be able to do that. But seriously, like anything in life, driving car, learning how to walk, you practice and master it. Probably the point you were making.

That said, Nintendo did say the WiiU controllers are better built than the 3DS controls.
