Wii U Speculation Thread of Brains Beware: Wii U Re-Unveiling At E3 2012

Oh, I know, the one potential issue is RAM imo. If Nintendo go with 1GB and Sony go with 4GB (the lower and upper bound for each respectively) then there's going to be some issues crop up as the generation progresses.

Of course, it'd be semi-mooted if MS just went with 2GB, then people would just start on their 360x2 version and tune for each of the other ones.

Well obviously the best thing for nintendo to do would be to retain the market leader crown while simultaneously fostering a platform that allows 3rd parties to make mountains of money for the first time on a nintendo console since the super nintendo. That would ensure Wii U is the lead platform for all multi-plats.

GODDAMNIT NINTENDO, IS SO SIMPLE, y u no do?

Gonna be honest.

Even if it is a Wii-style dynamic again, I'd be okay with that. Not ecstatic, but okay.

Wii had a lot of games I liked and it justified owning the system. If the Wii U is that, but with graphics that match my ever-rising minimum standard, then neat. I'll play it.

Agreed. It'd be nice if next generation, multiplats hit the console in stride, but if I can get the same level of quirky one offs with better than 360/PS3 performance, I'm sure it'll be another fun generation I can cruise out until a Bayonetta 2 or Marvel vs. Capcom 4 happens. :P

I agree with this. It wouldn't bother me to see the Wii U being underpowered significantly by comparison. But I do think it would bother Nintendo, honestly. A HUGE chunk of the money being spent on games these days are third-party games, notably the FPS brands. Nintendo can't sit that party out another generation, too much money at stake to pass up as well as essentially a part of the upcoming hobbyist generation (13-18 yr olds).

My biggest hope is Nintendo finally decides to acknowledge and support the online and feature rich potential of a system (MP/DLC/patches/features/etc). Which is another huge factor in my mind to getting more "hardcore support" and third-parties, as well as how it's supported and executed.

I think the controller input-wise needs to meet the standards of a 360/PS3 controller because for better or worse they ARE standard and in demand (among UI's especially). I don't think Nintendo will do itself any favors this generation being "different and creative", they need to offer differentiators and a strong first-party brand...but above all it's time Nintendo started meeting and exceeding consumer demand on a lot of things.

I agree, especially since I'm sure 1080p TVs will still be the standard by the end of next gen (correct me if I'm wrong, I'm no expert). But, at the same time, I can't help but shake the feeling that PS4/720 will have their Gears 3/Uncharted 3 equivalents by the end of next gen, and Wii U will be stuck with it's Skyward Sword.

Which isn't bad, and the gap probably won't be as large as this gen, but still =/

MCV speaks to retailers nationwide in its annual retail survey...

What new Console in 2012 do you most look forward too?

Vita 43%
WiiU 20%
Xbox3 02%
It was always going to be a toss-up between Wii U and PlayStation Vita for most anticipated product – and it was Sony’s upcoming portable came out on top. A 43 per cent majority voted the handheld – due to hit UK shelves on February 22nd next year – as their most anticipated product of 2012. Wii U, which has no confirmed release date as of yet, scored 20 per cent of the vote.

But one third of those surveyed were looking forward to new games more than hardware.

Which gaming hardware will have the best sales performance in 2012?

360 49%
WiiU 16%
PS3 16%
Vita 09%
3DS 07%

Retailers are confident of continued sales for Microsoft’s platform moving into 2012. 49 per cent said that Xbox 360 will be the best-performing console next year, followed by Wii U and PS3 with 16 per cent each.

Retail’s love for the Xbox 360 isn’t a suprise. The console has been a steady seller for nationals and indies throughout the year, both in terms of hardware and software sales.

Forward-looking retailers hope Wii U will surpasses the success of its predecessor, and claim PS3 sales could soar with another price cut.

Only 16 per cent of store managers reckoned the next generation of handhelds will dominate, with nine per cent backing Vita and seven per cent putting their faith in 3DS. One independent retailer added: “The Vita should be a big success if it delivers on its promises.”

The only question is how easy will porting be?

I'm of the mind that if the 360 can get ports from a modern PC, the WiiU should be in a much better position.

Shouldn't be too hard. Like you essentially pointed out the gap should be smaller than that of a 360 compared to a high-level PC. Then you combine that with the extra emphasis of game engine scalability for the next gen engines coming out and Wii U should be more than fine in the port area IMO.

Soooo... A 3x leap? Yay!

2.9999....x leap.

Things may have changed.

Nah. I think Wii U isn't deviating much from what we heard. Moderately powerful is fine considering the context of what he's saying.

Crap. I'm spamming again. >_<

Really ? Retailers expect Vita to do well ? Better than the 3DS (or rather more expect it to have the best sales performance) ? They look more forward to it than Wii U or XBox3 ? Do they know something we don't ?

No, they think that Sony = Sales still.

Vita is out in february, already being promoted. WiiU is an unknown quantity and retail in the UK don't know whether we'll be screwed over on timing. So of course they're more interested in Vita. Doesn't mean they're *more interested* in it, just that its on their roadmap more clearly as a thing to sell.

It's only because it's coming out so soon and we know a lot about it.

Yes, and this is one of the reasons I find the lack of details and hype from Nintendo and third parties disheartening.

nintendo has a vice-like grip on any potential leaks. The hype starts in 2012. We might not like it, but the rest of the year is all about making sure the 3DS gets a solid foothold and avoiding dissuading any potential Wii sales.

Nintendo doesn't want to repeat the same pricing mistake they did with the 3DS when launching the Wii U.

WII U

Nintendo's next big product launch is the Wii U, the first home console to hit the market in years and the follow-up to its smash hit Wii console.

The new console, which features a touch-screen controller and high definition graphics, will come out sometime between April and December 2012.

Fils-Aime said Nintendo has learned a lot from the mistakes it made during the 3DS launch, which lacked strong first-party titles -- meaning games made by Nintendo -- at the start.

The initial price on the 3DS was also too high, something that Nintendo will be careful about this time around, he said.

"We had to go back and reduce the price of 3DS and we certainly don't want to go through that when we launch Wii U," Fils-Aime said.

Not really something big, but I WANT NEWS, DAMN IT!

I'm just hoping at this point we get substantial news EARLY in the year. I don't want to wait until E3 for the full re-unveil, I want substantial news before then (a couple games shown, online information, SOMETHING, it doesn't have to be tons)

3DS's original price would've been worth it if it had OoT, Starfox, MGS3, RE, SFIV, and Yoshi's Island at launch, alongside some original games

but alas

It really just needed SM3DL and OoT at launch, with Mario Kart in the Fall.
The E3 hype was meteoric

Your suggestion is more realistic though

Sure but imagine a total blackout until the morning of Nintendo's E3 conference. I think Nintendo needs that hype for that day. It will be electric.

I wonder if after a year they would go as far as rename it. They know people don't like the name. (Though people didn't like Wii neither.)

It couldn't hurt them at this point.
The system isn't really known outside of the industry regulars.
I, still, personally think that it's just a bad name all around. They should just call it Nintendo. I mean, you don't get better branding than that!

Dropping the Wii brand, and changing it to the "Nintendo U" or something, would be best I think. The name itself is not particularly good, but also I think opinion of the Wii brand has diminished significantly. Make a clean break, start fresh.

What about Nintendo U? One of the reason Nintendo called the Wii "Wii" was because they wanted something easy to say in any language. U is just as easy.

EDIT: Damn it, Instro.

The Wii brand still has significant value. Probably more so than Nintendo at this point. Nintendo are never going to get the dudebros who so despise it anyway. The whole Wii U name sounds too much like "Wii University" in the US at least. It's also aimed about those who thought that Wii "wasn't for me," presumably hardcore gamers. Thing of it is, those hardcore gamers are not going to buy into it. IMO, more people would be happy with Wii2 or even Wii tu. That also makes it much more obvious that it is a real successor.

I was saying that before the E3 2011 press conference was even over. I was so sure they were going to drop the "Wii" just because that name is so associated with "old and outdated". I thought it was time to move on and create something totally new to blow us all away.

Guess not. They're really banking on brand recognition.

as much as we hate it, it's not really that bad of a bet. It's just a name. It's kind of a dumb name, but that doesn't make it a bad name. They might as well just call it the "New Wii," because that's all the U is going to symbolize to most consumers.

"Oh, there's a new Wii out? It's called the Wii U? Have you heard of the Wii U? It's the new Wii."

Wii is only associated with "old and outdated" by hardcore snobs. The system was red hot up until about last year, and even this year, Zelda is giving it a proper send off. The new system and new software will instantly revitalize the brand and all will be forgotten in the mind of the consumer. Just put a "2" after it. If anything, people will be weary of Nintendo as a company for letting their home systems flounder towards the end.

Btw, "Super" is way too 90s...and yeah, that makes me feel old.

Not sure why they need brand recognition. They are nintendo. The very name of their company is brand recognition and its going to be on the front of the system name anyway like it always is. Using the "Wii" tag is pointless to me, but I'm not running a billion dollar operation either, so what do I know lol

lol "Nintendo" wasn't even on the Wii box let alone the console.
