Wii U Speculation Thread of Brains Beware: Wii U Re-Unveiling At E3 2012

Because Nintendo is being fucking lazy, they had 7 months to add at least one or two new experiences to showcase and they didn't add anything, the whole CES showing was pointless.

What's better, 2 new demos at CES and 2 more at E3 (when everyone will bitch "we already saw half of these new ones at CES!") or 4 new ones at E3 to salivate over plus some actual game announcements?

A bigger blowout when the gaming world is watching is far more advantageous.

Yep. No way after the stink it caused before only supporting one tablet, that they didn't fix the issue. Of course it might have been the plan all along and they just showed it too early without being far enough along to get the programming down.

Yeah any confirmation I can get of this the better.

Just imagine a Madden where you can pick your own plays, make audibles, hot routes, substitutions, etc. on your own screen. Or maybe even draw your own play up real quick!

Or how about a new Crystal Chronicles or four swords. Even having your own screen instead of split-screen multi-player will be godly.

I haven't played Madden in 10 years, but I want this. And four swords would be a killer app too. Having the ability to expand puzzles by each player going to a separate place on the map. They could really make some devious puzzles that way. One switch on death mountain, another in the lost woods...fuck me I need this.

I'm with you on #3. Personally I think the right slider should be below the buttons a la the 360 controller.
I agree but even that will lead to awkward hand placement on the tablet itself. It also wouldn't line up with the hump on the back which is there for comfort/"triggers".

Seems like a lose lose on that front, hopefully not too bad. Personally I'm more worried about the top 2.

Look at the shadow of the van from 2:48-2:50. The shadow goes from one size, goes smaller and lighter when it hits the white painted lines, then returns to normal size.

There is no reason that I can tell from an outside source that would cause the shadow to distort like that.

I'm not saying its proof positive, but its another flag to me that its rendered. Either way, its more of a demonstration of what the tablet can be used for anyway. And it looks pretty cool to me.

Nope. The shadow goes from one size to another because of the uneven road.

Given the shape/size of the controller it might be a bit awkward/cause people to stretch to copy that layout if they intended on having lots of dual analogue/trigger support. That being said, using the buttons could be just as awkward.

I think everyone is missing my point here. There is NO point to have two controllers tethered to the same console UNLESS they were showing off something behind close doors that took advantage of both the controllers.

My guess is they showed something new but made anybody who saw it sign NDAs. I know that gets us no where.... but it still makes me excited none-the-less. :)

I'd say the extra controllers were just there so they could show the controller off to more than one journalist at a time. Especially as there were three of them; while the Wii U may well end up supporting two controllers, three is pretty much out of the question.

On a slightly different topic, I liked this bit from the article you quoted from earlier:

“At E3 they didn’t commit to this, but they know how important it is to make it technically feasible to support two screens. Even if that affects framerate, as a developer and player, I don’t care. It needs to work. Developers will design appropriate games for this. If you’re building a quiz game you’re not going to give a shit about the framerate.”

Hopefully it'll either be more comfortable than it looks, or we'll see a redesign of it at E3. Considering how rushed last E3 felt I am strongly of the opinion that both console and controller will have huge aesthetic redesigns. As is both console and controller just feel like something they put together quickly as proof of concept.

Why would they show a video? "Here, let's watch a random video that represents nothing."

Either way, I'm more interested in games.

I will not have anything less than GTA V, Final Fantasy XV and Monster Hunter 4.

C'mon Iwata!

I'm not worried about comfort though, all hands on reports say it's comfortable (though who knows about prolonged gaming sessions, that can vary greatly, so we'll see), but the absence of real triggers and real analogs is annoying as hell. Also I hope the circle pads it does use, at LEAST have grips of some sort on it, unlike the 3DS.

Any F-Zero rumors?

Any F-Zero rumors?

None. Beyond confirmation that the 3D Mario and Zelda teams have begun work on iterations, Pikmin 3 is being converted from Wii and Retro and Monolith are both working on U titles (I suppose you could add in Smash, but it's only been announced to enter development) we know nothing about 1st party and there has been no rumors beyond fan's hopes and dreams.

I can't decide, is it good or bad that people can't tell the difference between film and a render?

Doesn't matter.
I mean, even in those "Crysis vs The Real World" I could always tell the differences, but overall, it just isn't important anymore.
Games have passed the mark where you can basically display a high budget movie on a console.

Not Nintendo games, and that's what matters.

Nah, it'd be the first game, so we'd actually be trying.
I'd seriously buy Madden on Wii U if it was a REAL version, not a "special" version like the Wii ones have been.
You have a problem with Imadden Babyz?

Personally, I don't believe for a second that we're not going to get a new console in some shape or form from either MS or Sony before 2014. I know there are arguments why they should or shouldn't wait that long, I just tend to lean towards the side that says they wont want to let nintendo go uncontested for that long.

But that said, it's starting to look like an absence at E3 this year for either future platforms being a very real possibility. After looking at some of the responses people had to seeing the Wii-U Zelda demo again, I think nintendo has a real chance at converting a lot of would-be haters. If they show something like the Zelda demo, something hardcore gamers would love that would just simply be impossible from a visual standpoint on current gen consoles, I think it'd turn a lot of heads. I knew it was important before, but I'm starting to think that it's going to be absolutely crucial for them to have a graphical showcase game available before the end of the year and before any ps4/720 games start getting hyped. Yes, the ps4/720 are going to stomp all over the Wii-U, but if there's nothing substantial shown or teased for either this year, I think it'll be hard for a lot of people to ignore what many presently consider to be nothing but a 360 with a tablet.

I know some speculated on this after yesterday, but Reggie clearly says will hear more about the Wii U before e3 in this video.

There's some really nice footage in there. The game's screen looks so clear, praise the lord for HD Nintendo.

I also like Reggie saying: "The best looking games will be on the Nintendo platform."

Hold your horses, Reggie, we haven't seen fully what the Wii U is capable of, yet.

There might be some stock in that article saying either Sony or MS (more likely) will drop out of the console business.
I could seriously see MS heading more towards an Apple TV like device that is trying to be an all in one device (and CES is just confirming that).
They've been moving away from real gaming for a while now.

What's this? I'm not aware.

Basically their financial reports for the quarter and such.
They usually announce something like the day after (and this year it's likely to be the DQ7 remake).

I agree with this. Gamers are a whorey lot. If Nintendo utilizes their time alone in the spotlight to showcase some truly impressive games and a strategy that clearly shows these games are going to keep coming, I think gamers are going to find the Wii U to be quite tempting.

But that means another E3 2008 can't happen. They need to shelve the "family on the couch" shtick for a while.

Gawwwd DQ7 remake will be the bomb. I honestly don't even expect a lot at GDC, something maybe but not a lot. Maybe some information but I could see them saving the bombs to drop at E3. This is assuming they actually have bombs to drop on people.

Oh, they have bombs.
Nintendo hasn't shown us anything for the Wii U yet outside of some proof of concept demos running on Wii Engines.
At the very least, we'll probably see Retro's new game.

Zelda isn't going to get Nintendo the audience they don't have (in terms of turning heads). The only thing that will really turn heads is realistic FPS. As beautiful as a showcase of Zelda, Mario, Metroid or whatever, for most people how "good the graphics" a console has is how realistic a game it can run. Anything else is chalked up to arstiness.

Probably not.

I'm betting no new games until E3.

Don't go getting people's hopes up, Ace. You know better.

*360º IRL footage*

"that's maybe rendered, because point 1, point 2, etc"

"if rendered, well, looks decent"

Cause current gen games look better than real life

You know what the Wii U really needs?
A screen shot feature.
All these beautiful HD games and with no HUDs?
That is a feature that needs to be included.

The new controller is an impressive thing to hold in your hands. It feels solid and comfortable, and nothing about it marks it as a weak link. The screen itself is bright and beautiful, much clearer than the screen on an iPad, and even small details of the games are able to be seen clearly

Hopefully will shut up the few still talking about the quality of the screen and the comfort of the controller

Nintendo will get all the multi-plat releasee, but I think they really need a good exclusive realistic FPS. What are the chances Nintendo can wrangle a Gears-esque franchise from Epic? They seem to like working on the latest, greatest hardware, which Nintendo undoubtedly will be(at least for a little while, anyway).

I agree that they need some sort of graphical showcase but I'm hesitant to bet on it because Nintendo are so damned stubborn. If they decide the "expanded audience" is more imortant to them they will lean that way and they won't consider a gritty, graphical "WOW" demo to be important. They'll go on and on and on and on about the "Experiences they are bringing to the table".

I hope I'm wrong and that their statements about wanting the core gamer aren't just rhetoric.

Epic?
Unlikely.
EA and/or Ubisoft? Probably.

Whoops, my mistake, it was just Koizumi talking about having a lot of ideas for using the Wii U, much like Konno said for MK8, and not actual confirmation that development had begun (although it likely will be soon, if not already).
