Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

You're seriously trying to say though that this game:

had better art direction?

...different strokes for different folks I guess...

Why don't we go with the source images instead of how it was displayed on the SNES?

Yes, the DKC backgrounds do look much better. In addition, the character models were a major backstep for the series and looked rather bland when compared to the ones in DKJB.

We're not going to hear any news on Monday. Folks should stop raising other folk's hopes.

Even if that rumor is true, it's not likely that there'll be any sudden flood of news on Monday. More like devs being able to announce/discuss (but not actually show, I presume) the Wii U projects they have in development as warranted.

I'd still bet on Nintendo not allowing any screens of Wii U games to be shown. They will want to have have total control on what and when the first screens and video are shown of the new console.

Yeah, SNES DKC looked amazing for its time but DKCR's art and animation pop with a lot more polish and will no doubt age better as well.

I'm inclined to agree. Nintendo's gonna want to wow people, and to have everything ready for E3 would maybe have heavier impact. They'll want to avoid any sort of "car vault" situations..

Now, I'm less conviced that they'll keep mum on just game titles as we draw nearer to E3..

I could see Nintendo lifteing NDAs on specific titles monday. Ones that meet their goals showing hardware abilities etc.

I doubt they would do a general NDA lifting.

So you're going to criticize me for using a screenshot of what DC actually ended up looking like and then compare source images of DC to a cropped, zoomed in shot of one of the more bland locations in DKCR? I might as well use dophin pics then.

Man, I hope AC3 ends up actually looking like this on wii u...

It just needs a decent framerate

I expect this to be released around the same time as the Wii U, so it'll be one of the first multiplatform games that I buy for the system. I'll be moving all of my multiplatform purchases to that system. I'm hoping that Criterion's NFS is set for that platform. It should be since EA seems to be positioning themselves as major supporter of the system.

See, that's an interesting word to use. Platformer. I never really viewed Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, Mario Sunshine and similar games as a platformer. They were more "exploration" games, I'd say. I guess that was the mindset for developers during the N64 era. "Now that we have this new 3D technology, here's a huge, open stage, now explore it and collect shit. Beat bosses, find stars, coins, jinjos, shines, blueprints, etc."

The Galaxy games ditched the exploration aspect of those games and returned to the more linear style of platforming. I'd call Galaxy 1/2 a 3D platformer. Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie? Not so much.

I can understand how they'd be viewed as more of an exploration game than a platformer. The games obviously had a different feel compared to the 2D platformers that we were all accustomed to at the time. I think that they all still had a big focus on platforming, so it was easy to label them as platformers. But i've always viewed them as part of that genre. Maybe a sub-genre.

I think the biggest problem with DK64's collecting is that the amount of collecting was just overwhelming. Mario 64 did a great job of rarely making the player feel like they had to constantly go out of their way to get what they needed to complete the game. So that game just had a really nice flow to it even though collecting played a role in what you had to do. DK64 never had that flow (at least not imo).

But I can understand why people enjoy it. I know a lot of gamers love games that give the player a lot of things to collect. And I really can't think of many games that can compete with DK64 in that area.

Thought we were talking about the art style? And I only posted the latter shot because of the DK character, sorry about not making that clear.

Had the game looked anything like this, then it would've been great.

GUYS don't you see it? They want to keep their Wii U stuff so tight that we speculate until we attack us each other - it's a tarp

BTW, Baby Yoshi's DK images look cool - but don't fit with the franchise at all.

Retro now designed the majority of MK7 tracks? The only course work they actually did was on the 3 Wuhu Island tracks which the EAD director said EAD had to edit in iwata's ask. Their main job was assisting in the art and animation department.

So Retro is to blame for the track that is "ruining" Mario Kart 7.

The SNES DKC game look like everything is made of plastic. Surely impressive that the SNES could do such graphics, but DKCR is easily so much better, as evidenced by the other screenshots Baby Yoshi edited in now.

That sounds most wise. Letting multiplatform floodgates open on "superior" versions could convince people to wait for wii u.

Well, we were destined to have this chat anyways, so might as well start here :

Those Darkstalkers 2 shots? Don't look much better than what it's going to look like on X360/PS3 - especially not to those who already have an X360/PS3.

For these multiplatform games - i don't think -anyone- who isn't a dyed in the wool Nintendo fan who hasn't bought into the current gen is going to give a twopenny fuck.

Any upgrades are going to be a bonus - now, the self same problem is going to smack X720/PS4 in the face as well if the main battle plan is to use current gen as a base, but this could be come a milstone around Wii U multi supports neck.

Again - we're likely to come back to the baseline of exactly what the WiiU can do and for that we need E3. We need to see how Wii U handles -next gen- ports to assess what we can expect for multisupport, though that's a tall order at this point given what we know of Wii U and the state of the next gen consoles.

Things that will convince people on Wii U will be third and first party exclusives. And i expect there to be some huge heavy hitters - especially in Japan. I expect some of those to start punching people in the face soon.

Don't know what DQ X will do on Wii U, but I'm curious: what kind of heavy hitters?

I expect nothing on third party exclusives.

I suspect strongly that that Nintendo-Capcom relationship spreads far and wide beyond their 3DS coziness.

Hmmm.

After the Capcom 5 I'm not so sure about that. I'd bet on a Street Fighter x Tekken Wii U versions with a few Nintendo characters like Link or Captain Falcon co-starring. On the other hand, the Wii had it's share of Capcom exclusives.

I'm waiting to see if Nintendo and Capcom take things to the next level (i.e., Capcom puts its headliners on Nintendo's home console).

This is Japan i'm talking about - if they really have thrown buckets of money at Capcom to ensure that the 3DS wasn't a failure then i'm suspecting they have pre-emptively done the same for the Wii U.

I see a few of them happening. I expect a fighter, RE 6 and did we ever get an confirmation about Dead Rising 3?

It wouldn't surprise me. I totally see something like MH 4 HD happen on Wii U with 3DS connectivity. Allthough, Capcom will have more than just MH ready for Japan. Maybe Sengoku Basara?

Still posing our opinions as fact I see :)

Like I said, there's no reason to doubt it'll happen.
But be picky in a thread of crazies anyway.
:P

Will it have Wiimote support? I think that's the big question. They patched in Move support for RE5: Gold Edition, but I don't think that they've confirmed that they'll support Move in RE6.

Eh, I can see Capcom taking the easy way and basically just mapping items to the controller and not worrying about alternate controls.

I'm expecting MH to be the main crux of the deal - i guess we'll see.

I cannot express how much I want the first (kinda) HDTV video game ever made, Hi-Ten Bomberman on Wii U with the sprite-based graphics in 1080p @ 60fps.

As very unlikely as that is to happen ;_; RIP Hudson Soft

A Kirby's Epic Yarn sequel needs to happen. The game is just an absolute delight in every possible aspect.

One of my favorite games of the last, pfft...fifteen years, easily. No, actually, take that qualifier out. Just one of my favorite games period.

I would love to see a Wii U sequel. It would be eye-popping with 1080p assets.
