Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

lulwut ?

Concerning the Wii U power ? Well, i took every precautions in the world, and never stated that it will be a beast, but it's clearly impossible for it to be equal, technically, to ps360. Now, there are situations, specific, when what you'll see on the main screen, won't be far superior that current gen versions, but me and a lot of other posters already explained why, and it can't be a serious way to gauge the Wii U capabilities.

Hey, are you serious ? I mean, you are <censored> menacing a frenchman who can infuriate and irritate people far away just by a few teasing words, imagine what kind of powers i'm gifted in real life ><

Ubisoft engage des Ninjas ?:p
About WiiU power, I think it's safe to say it's better than 360/PS3.

MOAR SHAYDUHS!!!!

We need more POWER!

Monolith basically came in as a production team to Zelda: Skyward Sword, not too differently than how Retro Studios came in as a production team to Mario Kart 7. Quite frankly Nintendo (or any in-house developer) does not 400 animators. Usually in Japan animation and additional production modeling is farmed out to several small companies. Check out any Tecmo-Koei, SEGA, Platinum, Square-Enix, Capcom game and surely you will find multiple mysterious companies pop up somewhere. Nintendo themselves have several small companies that do several small things like animation, motion capturing, digital imaging and debug. For Mario Kart 7 and Skyward Sword, they decided to use Monolith and Retro Studios to do the animation, and provide additional graphic modeling. But Monolith did not design any Zelda dungeons, nor did Retro Studios design any actual course tracks (outside of Wuhu Island which EAD edited according to the director).
Not quite true. It wasn't just a couple of artists and animators - game designers, programmers and concept artists from Monolith worked on Skyword Sword as well. It was a pretty legit coproduction, not just some grunt work. Even more obvious once you realize that, while the Disaster team worked on Skyward Sword, the Xenoblade team contracted half a dozen outside companies to help them out as well. Including studios like Production IG or Shirogumi.

At this point, I kind of don't even care how relative to the current gen the Wii U's graphics are. I'm at the stage where as long as the system is powerful enough to play Nintendo games in HD and with good image quality, I'm fine with that.

I own a Vita and have played Uncharted, Wipeout and Marvel vs Capcom on it, but I'm still absolutely fine with the way Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7 and Kid Icarus look on my 3DS. They're still nice looking (and bloody brilliant) games..

Damn, I took a break for a couple of days, come back and shit has gone crazy again. I guess so many people really want to believe that the Wii U is going to be this weak ass system. It's funny and sad at the same time.

One poster said that no matter how things work-out, there will be tears.

Now tell me.. why would someone cry if the U ended-up being decently powerful?

And a TEE EEE VEE TWO POINT OH! right?

It's amazing to see other sites pick up shit like this without any real confirmation. It's like journalism has disappeared from the gaming media. Is there actually one single site on the internet that tends to be more journalistic and investigatory with regard to gaming or is the entire gaming media industry just a pile of hacks?

Sadly, i think the journalism never appeared for gaming since the beginning, in 70% of the content (newspapers, websites, etc.). Unfortunately, it's nearly the same situation for other subjects, far more important (domestic and foreign policy for example), with just ad-nauseam repeats of AP or Reuters news.

If I see a Mario at E3, the last thing on earth I will be thinking of is how powerful the system is.

Then if I see Retro's game, I will probably buy an Iwata blowup doll.

What? Have you read some of the posts in the other threads? There will be tears either way. If it's super awesome some people will be upset because they want Nintendo to lose and there's no way they could or should have a powerful system. If it's not so awesome...you know why there will be tears. Just brings me back to how 360/PS3 footage can look worse than 360/PS3 footage. Some folks genuinely want them to fail.

I try not to spend too much time over there, lest I speak honestly and get myself into trouble right before E3. But I can imagine.

The fact that it says PS3/Vita is easier to program should have been the clearest indicator.
Yeah, everyone should know that the Vita alone is more than match for Wii U. Is just common sense.

I'm disappoint that the iPad didn't even got a mention, though.

I was joking as I put "SNES".

Your sources on the Wii U could be wrong but you're surely not lying as it was too consistent, realistic and matter-of-fact to be seen as someone fucking with people.

And i have no interest in doing that :)

I'd like to second this.

No you're doing it wrong! NEEDS MOAR POWAH7 COARS AND GDDR5 RAMS!!!

Ahh well, I tried.

And any article that claims the PS3 + Vita combo is just the same as a Wii U and Subscreen is a pile of shit.

Production work by no means grunt work. Grunt work would probably equate to some developer quietly porting a game and having no mention of their involvement. But referencing the Skyward Swords staff, there were 204 people credited in the game. Not counting any localization, debug, or special thanks.

Nintendo EAD
SRD Technology
Nintendo SPD
Monolith Soft
Digital Media Labs Inc.

The programming was all SRD (One of the two main Nintendo EAD program teams located in the basement of the central office). If you look at the staff closely you will see a pattern in the following.

Graphic Design:
Core Zelda Team in Kyoto / Monolith Soft / EAD Tokyo Super Mario Galaxy 2 staff

Animation
Nintendo SPD / Monolith Soft / Digital Media Labs

Both Monolith Soft and the EAD Tokyo Super Mario Galaxy 2 staff joined the core team in the production phase. You can see in the in game credits they break it up for you.. splitting the developers.. and showing you at what phase of the development they joined. Most of that Super Mario Galaxy 2 staff that joined on Skyward Sword did not work on 3D land i think.

But this multi-family-developer production allliance is going to continue. This generation and onward more so than ever. Smash Bros. Brawl probably showed them all how it would work, and they did it again with Kid Icarus: Uprising actually.

iPhone/iPad easier to program for than Wii U confirmed.

Not a PoS. Just an April Fools joke that wasn't able to be published on a Sunday.

Imagineton:

For the physics of Mario Universe feather cape !

Or just a static one with less resources required, i bet it won't bother the majority of players.

Save if for SSB. :)

That wound is still healing, Acebandage. *cries in front of the Isaac pic*

Also, I'm very surprised to see IGN being completely conservative in the midst of all this bullshit. Very unlike them, they must know something...

Yes, but I have also seen the same printed in other articles since E3. Madness.

A little aside. Does anyone listen to the Weekend Confirmed podcast? I've been away from it for a few weeks but listened to the most recent one today and they talked for a while about Durango, Orbis etc but I have NEVER heard then talk that in depth about the Wii U. Have they talked about Wii U lately? The thing is coming out this year, we actually have people leaking bits of info about it and we're getting a bit of a picture about the console, but it still seems to get ignored. This is reaffirms that the gaming media just seems to not give a shit about Nintendo anymore. I remember the time they gave to talking about the XBox 10 year anniversary and reluctantly talked about the GC one for about 5 seconds when it was mentioned it was its anniversary too :) I could just be paranoid of course :)

Well, the GC is right there with the GBA in terms of notoriety: a solid system but I wouldn't blame anyone for glossing over it's anniversary. You might be paranoid. :P

Alot of what I used to consider crackpot theories about anti-Nintendo publishing and press are much better articulated here by you all, though. To the point where they are pretty convincing.

I wouldn't be surprised if Wii U ends being inferior to PS3/360 in some hardware aspects, some source indicate it's on par with current, and other say it's slightly superior. Nintendo is probably making use of modern techniques to cover up the lack of hardware power, but in practice it's inferior in raw numbers.

That Gamebiz article is rediculous, they could have at least tried to not look like complete trolls and also included some quotes from folks like Randy Pitchford and Mark Rein, but no. Two points of view in a gaming "media" article? C'mon.

Mmmm, I love french bread, perfect for homemade sandwiches.

Nintendo half-assing it is no surprise, but anyone who thinks that the Wii U is going to be less powerful than current gen is fucking dumb, and should be called out on their fucking dumbness.

I doubt nintendo is half assing anything.

I'm certain that if they do decide to go with a console barely at the level of the current gen or weaker, it's because they have some piece of software that they think will save their bacon. They've got a plan, I'm sure of it. Whether it's going to turn out they way they want is another matter entirely.

They knew how to choose a word that would pierce the typical, uninformed reader's heart. Shader is that term you hear about just enough that it isn't a quantifier among the industry (yet), but sounds really important.

Whoever came up with this is a really bitter a**hole.

You people are way too hard on Dark Dawn.
=/
Wanted to like it, I waited forever. It was just far more convoluted in terms of plot than it had to be.

It'll only be less powerful when taking specs based on numbers on a piece of paper for a few things.
In practice, no single part of it will be less powerful.

something to keep in mind is whether or not nintendo actually increased the performance of their console by a significant amount.

i think it's reasonable to suspect the 3ds was originally launching in 2010, and the wii u was launching in 2011. then everything got pushed back 4-6 months, shoving the wii u into a middle-of-the-year 2012 release (with the same specs).

now it's more likely that the console will not release at the end of june, but towards the later end of the year. with an extra year to futz around, they might have just kept everything the same while they focused on getting things like the tablet working and games finalized.

tl;dr the wii u might be a system that was meant to be comparable to the ps3/360 in 2011, released one year later.
