Wii U Update adds Off TV play for Wii mode (but you can't use gamepad to control)

Works as expected. Neat option actually.
If a later update adds support to use Classic Controller-enabled games directly would be cool. But I wasn't expecting it anyway.

So I was just, efficiently, playing Skyward Sword while starring down at the gamepad in my lap. this is pretty awesome seeing as I've practically have a portable wii
and Majora's Mask VC
.

I'd just like to ask if this is the large fall update that was promised at the end of September/ early October? I don't think it is, but I am not sure. I did think that the fall update would include the Miiverse expansion.

The only thing good about this is N64 games on the wii u pad screen.

The problem is we are going to have to wait and pay the $5 or whatever upgrade fee for proper wii u support for them. As it is right now this offers nearly no incentive to not use the tv unless there truly is somebody hogging it.

awesome, now I can play Smash 64 on the small screen!

It will be, just you wait and see. This will be Nintendo thinking they're amazing and leading the industry.

Such a sexy controller! :)

I just finished playing a few matches of Project M on the gamepad. Had to play in 4:3 since I wanted to load it up quickly through HBC. Looked amazing though.

What was cool is that this update came at a great time! My girlfriend had just came home with her sister and wanted to watch movies together, so I went and used this to my advantage. Amazing!

I would've loved an option to queue eShop purchased with Spotpass so that they start automatically when the game is released. I guess this isn't that - at least, yet. But good update.

I don't see how they could've properly implemented Wiimote controller mapping to the Gamepad. This is still a cool feature for those who don't have the TV available all the time.

Can't the Wiimote be mapped to the Gamepad? Maybe the right analog can act like the pointer or whatever.

Anyways, it's a pretty cool feature.

(Un)Fun Fact:

Wii Mode will not boot unless the Wii U is connected to a TV. I didn't know this before, but it's really sad and dumb. I was hoping to navigate the Wii Menu with my Classic Controller and play some Wii games on my Gamepad since I don't have a TV in my dorm, but that no can happen.

:(

The chorus of disappointment in this thread kind of says otherwise.

Plenty of people asking to play Wii games using the gamepad. Using the gamepad as a minature TV to play Wii games through? Not so much.

Chorus of dissapointment in nintendo related threads? Not saying anything really.
Whatever,, Im done with all the Wii Games.
Also havent turned my Wii U on since February....

You should really check out the wii hidden gem thread

Are you sure? Try holding down the B button before you turn the Wii U on. It should launch Wii Mode without asking you to click with the Wii Remote, and it should automatically launch with the Gamepad streaming.

Confirming that this is great with Wii Fit. Watch tv, put the gamepad beneath, select workouts with the wii remote. Makes a world of difference for the ones that don't require full focus on the screen.

Now that seems silly. Hopefully there's a solution.

I tried, and it still asks me to select the Wii Menu on the screen. I blindly clicked around with the CC and found the button, but I was then told that I was unable to launch the Wii Menu.

Same here. No TV. We're the people who this feature makes the most sense for.....so hopefully it gets fixed.

I can understand the complaints about the VC/Classic Controller thing, and to a point, I can understand the complaints about the (very few) Wii games with Classic Controller support not being playable with just the Gamepad...

But people who think Skyward Sword or Mario Galaxy are basically not going to be Wii games anymore? That they were going to work just fine without game-specific patching and coding to essentially rebalance how those games played? Those people are straight-up delusional.

Making CC supported games controllable via the gamepad would mean that the CC would be obsolete, and no more CC sales for Nintendo. So probably not going to happen.

yeah..and you can check BMI results free from tv

For all of you running homebrew on the vWii...

If you install channel forwarders, the homebrew will display in the correct aspect ratio.

There seems to be a problem with the homebrew channel where it's not allowing anything to be displayed in 16:9.

As long as there's a forwarder, you're good though.

Another half assed effort from Nintendo.

I would be more surprised if Nintendo delivered a competent feature rich update, then releasing these half assed and gimped services and products.

If you change the mode to non-HDMI in the settings, it will launch without needing a tv. I just did it and am now playing re4.

i get playing wii games on it being great, but not with another controller.

it goes from a wii handheld, to playing a wii on a super small tv...

If I'm ever traveling, you can bet my nerdy ass is gonna bring my Wii U along and take advantage of this. I was just playing Metroid Prime 3 and RE4 with Wii controls in my bed. I don't care how silly I'll look, cuz that's awesome.
