Wild Gate: The Next Generation (of Battle Royale)

As we wait for Godzilla to show up on Saturday (April 12th, 2025 - 10:00am PDT), I thought it would be a great use of time to talk about my disappointment in NeoGAF.

Ya'll missed BADLY on Wildgate. This is a surefire GAAS hit and not a soul here saw it. Not one. Not a clarky clarky , not a James Sawyer Ford James Sawyer Ford , not a yurinka yurinka or a Mibu no ookami Mibu no ookami .

Dreamhaven (publisher) and Moonshot Games (dev) released two forgettable trailers that did a poor job of illustrating what this game was about. They emphasized art direction, action, and humor. Three things that aren't important in the GAAS market but are heavily overvalued by internet discourse.

This is what they should have done. Here's a full, mostly unedited, gameplay loop. It's an episode of Star Trek, only you play it. The ending of this clip...the build up to that climax, is why Battle Royale is so much better than the lesser PvP genres...

What does it do well that most people didn't notice?

- Pairs high skill aggro players with low skill casual players better than anything on the market. There are PvP centric "boarding class" characters who's role is to disrupt enemy ships by out DPSing opponents. There are "pilot class" characters who's role it is to drive the bus and make longer strategy call outs to teammates. This class needs to have high game awareness but doesn't require crazy thumbs to compete. There are "janitor class" characters who's job it is to clean up the ship when it's on fire. This is great for people who want to hang out with friends but can't handle the PvP. Shout it from the rooftops...this is brilliant f*cking design.

- The "map", called The Reach, is procedurally generated. Moonshot essentially created 20 PoI's and 10 space "hazards" for Wildgate. Each match pulls 15 PoI's and 5 space hazards and shuffles them up so you're discovering them as you play. That has two impactful benefits. First, the map doesn't get stale like it does in most PvP centric games. Once you play Route 66 in Overwatch 122 times, it loses a bit of it's luster. Secondly, that means each update hits harder because pulling from 40 PoI's and 20 space hazards (after Season 6) makes The Reach that much more diverse. Again, brilliant game design.

- Moonshot understood the GAAS market is moving away from competitive "sports style" games, into more social "heroes journey" types games. They Wayne Gretzkey'd the market when Firewalk (Concord) and Mountaintop Studios (Spectre Divide) fell on their face.

So for everyone who said "Battle Royale is over" or "The GAAS market is saturated"...

Doesn't look like my bag to be honest.

All eyes on Saturday at the moment for me my man. In the mean time filling my days with POE2 and a trip down memory lane on Verdansk warzone.

Wildgate looks like a boring, unappealing, artistically uninspired and generic, and overall seems to be a mediocre game to me. I don't see why I should give any attention to it.

And well, in any case I think to try to group all GaaS to make any random take against them is dumb and stupid, as would be to do it for non-GaaS games, paid games, SP games, F2P, etc. There are a ton of types and subtypes and even within subtypes can be very different in terms of game concept, artstyle, gameplay, features or quality.

I literally can not comprehend this perspective when the only similar game in the public consciousness is Sea of Thieves. That's it.

I will not forgive these words you said here.

I have no interest in GaaS other than a cursory interest as they impact the industry. You'd never find me playing any of them. Whenever I take your side on things, it's because I'm calling balls and strikes GaaS are absolutely here to stay and while that might displease me on a personal level as a gamer, I'd like to think I'm mature enough not to let that influence my critical thinking on the subject. People pretending like companies can operate outside of the GaaS space are beyond delusional, which isn't to say that I always agree with all of your takes, some of which have been pretty hot takes.

So I watched the twitch rivals Wildgate event like 3 days ago and I was excited before that.

Looks ok. I thought it was going to be a more relaxed sea of thieves type game in space. In fact its looking way more competitive than I want

In keeping with the Star Trek theme of Wildgate...

Most of the comments here are from Type 0 civilizations. Most of you are not ready to join the Federation.

If anyone here is interested in playing Wildgate on PS5, let me know. They're sending me a key for the 10th - 14th playtest but I'm away for the week. Must have purity in your heart and a true love for GAAS to recieve the mana from Heaven.

James Sawyer Ford James Sawyer Ford - There is goodness in you. Let me know if you'd play. (PS5 key)

Edit: Disregard the above accept for the JSF compliment. Code is gone

OP when I read your post I was pretty hyped, I really liked how things sound and was all in, but after watching some videos.....ehhh not so much now.
If it's free or has a trail I'll give it a shot since you did make it sound pretty freaking cool.

If I may ask...What turned you off in particular? (This looks like the coolest, most imaginative game we've seen in years to me)

The character and creature designs. It feels a bit on the slow side and some of the overall visuals being dated. I also reminds me a lot of Wildstar visually that Sgt Asher mentioned above. (I did play and enjoyed that game for a bit back when it came out though it couldn't get me away from FF14)

I know it doesn't sound like much and it mostly petty but it did detract me from it some. But I am pretty open minded and am more then willing to give it a fair show because it does sound quite awesome still.

No, you definitely have an opinion that many share. Art style has a big impact on a lot of people.

I played a ton of Overwatch, Fortnite, and League of Legends so this style is easy to digest for me. Hoping they have another playtest in a month or two. I'll try to keep you in mind as they apparently have "friend codes" in today's playtest. Good chance the next one does as well.

Yes art style is a big thing for many. I'm pretty open to many but sometimes you come across a game and it's like I can not see pass the art cause I dislike it so much and personally I hate myself for that cause I'm not a judge a book by its cover type of person otherwise.

I appreciate it very much you'll try and keep me in mind for a code, thank you very much. I really do want to like it from how it all sounds.

I can not judge it before playing it. But I have a few words.

Studios formed by ex-Blizzard can never achieve the polish of prime Blizzard had. Even the modern AAA studios do not have that kind of quality standards. But art direction does not look appealing either. You do not need millions for that.

Let see if they can nail the gameplay. I will give it a try because of the team behind is talented but keeping my expectations in check.

Men_in_Boxes Men_in_Boxes is the type of gamer that game publishers wish we all were.

As for the game itself, I'm neither impressed or disappointed. This game will likely have a small playerbase for a few months until it becomes hard to get a match and dies silently.

How could you not be impressed with a 30 minute Star Trek episode game?

You people have no soul. God has cursed us with the presence of the soulless!
