Will consoles eventually become a thing of the past?

For just over a year now, there's been a lot of hype about consoles dying just because Xbox has fallen. Sorry, but no, Switch 2 has broken records at launch and PS5 is generating more profit than any other PS for Sony (and next year with GTAVI you'll have crazy sales).
Sadly record profits aren't translating to good products and services.

Commodification will push the console industry toward an open model more similar to "PC" in which the platform is represented by the 'soft" part (software and services) and not the hardware; the need for custom hardware will dwindle over time.
Nintendo will still produce dedicated hardware (consoles) decades from now.

It will seems to be the case in the long run.

I think there will be always consoles, or let's say:
  • Dedicated gaming device connected to the tv to play locally, and cheaper than a gaming PC
  • Dedicated portable gaming device with traditional controls (buttons, sticks, dpad)
But over time both their hardware and OS will be more and more similar and compatible with PC and mobile, so all 3 will start to merge and we'll start seeing more multiplatform ecosystems and games. Meaning, you'll buy a get a game let's say in PSN, MS store or Google Play and will be able to play it in almost every device.

Basically the trend we have since many years ago will continue.

Well yes. Everything is slowly getting to the inevitable streaming services. Stadia was too soon but everything is going to be that in the near future. I think even Nvidia shitting on local PC hardware and games/consoles becoming too expensive are simply moves to make local hardware/software less appealing for that reason.

No, actually it's not. I talked about how much I loved the PS2 and 3. If you check my posts, I rip pretty much everything. Gaming is fucking shit in 2025. Including your precious PS5. There is just so many PS fanboys here that are so sensitive and feel the need to pretend that this gen is great. It's atrocious for all of the big 3.

I guess it is normal for some people to be overly emotional invested, to the point where they became denial.
