Will Wright's Spore

I could not believe this. It's a thirty-five minute demonstration of Will Wright's new baby.

Nevermind, just found an older thread with the same subject. Sorry.

i suspect that playing it will be less fun than watching that demonstration. but what a demonstration!

Every thread on every messageboard on the Internet should have been about nothing but this game ever since that presentation. Game developers should have committed seppuku en masse as penance for wasting their time on shit while Wright was out there making this.

If I were a game developer watching Will Wright's fantastic demonstration of just what games are capable of, I would be fucking embarrassed. Dozens of Tony Hawk games. Probably as many Tomb Raider games, Deer Hunter games, Madden games. Diminishing returns. Sequel fatigue. And all the while, Will Wright was quietly working on this.

That it's going to be published by EA will undoubtedly be one of gaming's greatest tragedies.

I like this post, and I mean that in a good way.

In order to raise the spirits of an Italian prince burdened by the cares of his position, a musician created for him a cat piano. The musician selected cats whose natural voices were at different pitches and arranged them in cages side by side, so that when a key on the piano was depressed, a mechanism drove a sharp spike into the appropriate catÂ’s tail. The result was a melody of meows that became more vigorous as the cats became more desperate. Who could not help but laugh at such music? Thus was the prince raised from his melancholy.

viral marketer.

a very clever viral marketer.

i hope this title sees release on Mac as well. its a long shot but playing this on powerbook anywhere i want seems far too tailored. :)

Anyone who watches the video for that game and doesn't become a viral marketer for it free of charge is not a gamer.

Will Wright makes great sandbox games. He should stick to them. The action bits of Spore look downright dull. Especially on land.

This game looks too friggin big. I'm never gonna have the time for it. Nor the PC power =_=

Looks like it might get boring too. Not sure how in depth each game feature is i.e. trade and negotiation etc but if each "game-type" is a bit weak it could fall down.

Awesome demo though. The activity when you view the whole world was pretty insane.

Has Will Wright ever made one?

Well, he made Sims Online, SimEarth, SimAnt, and plenty of other turds that almost reduced Maxis to "EA's Simcity intellectual property." So your implication that Will Wright is somehow close to infallible does not sway my opinion that trying to make many loosely related, high quality games-within-a-game is a recipe for failure.

I don't think he had anything to do with Sims Online. And both SimEarth and SimAnt were fantastic and deserve sequels. Hater.

He's also made more great games than almost any other game designer. You have no taste if you hate Sim Ant. That game needs a sequel.

If you're going to put your name first in the credits, and for Game Design, you're either responsible for the design, or you're a tremendous jackass.

And, ugh. SimEarth was awful. One of the biggest disappointments for me all-time when it came out. SimLife was even worse. Spore is simply another go-round on the same themes. My prediction: an interesting high concept but poor execution results in a game that provides 10 hours of novelty (don't get me wrong, novelty is a good thing, and all too rare nowadays), 10 hours of pushing the sandbox's limits, and about 5 hours of boredom before it is forgotten. IGN will give it a 9.7 and be ridiculed for years afterwards.

I'm not a hater, so much as someone who thinks worshipping the guy who squandered one of the biggest PC game budgets of all time on the second-worst MMO of all time is silly.
