will XBOX NEXT offer anything unique?

How about some good games that are not named HALO.

OK now to all the MS fans... don't get upset but... COMMON MAN WE'RE TALKING ABOUT MICROSOFT HERE, this is a dumb question. A unique feature? Microsoft hasn't invented a "unique feature" in the software business the last... wait... how much years MS exists? Unless they buy someone to invent this unique feature or they steal it and then pay it's price in the courtrooms, it is impossible. I'm even surprised that you're discussing this.

Hey! You win idiot of the day award!

For reference, Microsoft as a company has the largest Research and Development budget of any software company in the world. Yes, MS spends more on R&D than any other company in their industry. It may surprise you, but it's true.

Now, if you're going to argue that they're moving towards being the next Xerox (creating great ideas but being completely unable to bring them to market), then I might agree with you.

I can give some solid controller details..

First off, there's nothing quirky. No touch-screens, gyroscopic thingers, etc. It's basically a refined Xbox1 controller with a few technical enhancements to make it more versatile and comfortable.

Any info on whether they're considering wireless controllers out of the box? God, please give us a first-party wireless controller and a wireless Live headset option...

Doubtful. Microsoft laughed at the idea of wireless a couple years ago and I doubt they've reversed course on that for the system.

I hope to God that Nintendo comes through with wireless out of the box.

The scroll wheel is the best thing to happen to mice since the 2nd button. I love the scroll wheel, it makes so much sense!

And I believe MS invented the scroll wheel.

I hope you are right fugimax as it will determine whether i buy the thing or not.
There is definitely a great wireless solution for the system. Whether it will be pack-in or not is unknown.

Fugi, do you know what we should be expecting out of the Gates keynote? Any new info? Demos? There is scepticism that he'll take about Xbox 2 at all, and that has me a little :(

but ... what will we do without rumbles!?!

Who gives a shit, rumble is the most overrated piece of crap ever invented. Nintendo should be ashamed.

And che, while MS didn't do it first(Xband anyone). They have developed and made it more mainstream, that is called pioneering whether you like it or not. They werent the first but the did develop it further and made it more mainstream.

Alright, last thing I can say then I need to stfu..

As I posted in another thread (or maybe earlier in this one?), Gates should at the very least announce Xbox 2 (unless things change). Expect a few details about the system. If there are demos, I highly doubt it will be running realtime, but it will be representative of what we will see out of xb2.

Note that I am only working on rumors (though rumors very close to xb's home-base, if you will).

Thanks for your take on it Fugi. I hope your right...

...except on the non-realtime demo bit. TBH there's no excuse for prerendered demos this gen, imo - the realtime graphics should be enough. I can see why they might do that if there's no final hardware though =/

Gah, I might have to retract my statement about what's going down tomorrow. (I literally talked to someone "in the know" just now).

Things are very up in the air. Reason for a no-go tomorrow may be lack of decision on a name for the stupid thing...which means it probably wasn't going to get any more than announced tomorrow anyways.

Less than 24 hours to go and we'll know what we'll know.

would they just call it "Xbox Next" and be done with it?

Xenon has an "X" in it, but it doesn't tie strongly to the Xbox brand

Anything with a "2" in it is going to be seen as inferior to the PS3

Xbox Next is as good as anything else they've got.

Well, if we look at MS' track record, they're good at skipping versions for marketing reasons (look @ MSN vs. AOL for example).

Maybe we'll get Xbox 3 ;)

They could just keep referring to it as "the next xbox" until they have a name. Sony strictly referred to the PS2 as "the next playstation" or "the next generation playstation" during its initial "a glimpse of the future unveiling", before they labelled it Playstation2 officially a few months later.

I was actually just wondering about the system's name myself today ;) "nextBox" as a name would be a bit silly imo, as "next" relates to the future, and there will come a time when it is no longer an element of the future, but the present.

I give a big fingers crossed to Progressive scan situation being sorted out in PAL land. I can't play halo 2 on my flatmates HD projector because my unmodded xbox only does paly 50/60 and 100 inches really needs the HD treatment. I can play halo 2offline (UGH) on a modded xbox though through progressive :(.

you need to take that up with the European Union, not MS.

man, they should really call it xenon. xenon is a cool name. anything else sucks.
BTW fugi, you work for MS or game development somewhere else?

Is there anything stopping them, legally etc., including hi-def output on the european xbox2? or does that automatically imply progressive scan which raises legal issues?

That really sucks if true. I have hi-def, and really would like to take advantage of it with games, but I'll probably have to buy my systems locally if i'm to play online :(

I'm pretty sure not, it just doesn't get included because the tellys can't handle it (which is getting less and less true every day).

Hmm, but the american console has to handle output for hidef and non-hidef TVs too, so why not just leave that functionality in there for the european console? It'd seem to me they'd have to go out of their way to take it out..which suggests there are other issues at play here :(
