Yeah I really don't know how busy the high streets will be. Nothing really to judge it against. Could be dead, stuff could be closed, or could be busy with so many off work. I imagine there's a fair few who have taken this week to go abroad anyhow.

Best of luck to you on your big day too!

The last thing i remember that was similar was Diana's funeral, the shops were deserted then (but open nonetheless!). My local comic store is closedthough, that sucks.

And thanks, I'll need it :)

I hope there are more than 2 billion people watching. It will mean I can chill the fuck out at work and read comic books since no one will be working.

It seems like every third post in this thread is either, 'no way 2 billion' or 'I'm not interested it's boring'

If you're not interested why post in the OT? Do you go through every thread on the gaming side saying 'I am not intersted in this game and can't see why anybody should be'

Either way I'm looking forward to the spectacle, should be fun, I think I'll bust out the England shirt for the first time since the World Cup.

I already made this argument.

Clearly didn't deter them, *sigh*.

I don't believe in the 2 billion watching hypothesis.
The world cup, is the single most televised event in human history. And that brings in about 750 million viewers.

Not even close, Diana's funeral was 2.5B and it's the not the biggest according to wiki.

There are alot of old people in the world tho.

I don't think people really know why they're watching this themselves.
Everyone I know that is watching seems to have vauge thoughts of: "Royal Wedding -> Proud to be British -> Might as well watch it". For old people it's just the thing to do.
At best this is an excuse for a day off and a chance to get pissed and eat party food. At worst this is a celebration of a quintessential British institution.

ITT: Americans act confused at people's displays of irrational, mindless patriotism like they haven't had the monopoly on that shit for decades.

Something I remember quite vividly about Diana's funeral was my bemusement at seeing no traffic on the M1. Just nothing in either direction. I don't imagine it'll be like that tomorrow though.

From what I can tell, anything that claims to have 1B+ viewers is based almost purely on speculation (and I'm sure some highly exaggerated counting methods as admitted by FIFA and the NFL).

Anyway, it'll pull in a lot of viewers simply cause every broadcast channel the world wide will be showing it.

On the left is Diana's 'friend', James Hewitt...

Mmm hmm.
I didn't see this answered, but I thought it was fairly well established that Hewitt didn't even meet Diana until Harry was around 2 years old. Besides, even if he was, Harry doesn't have much better to look forward to:

It's just some Gaffers trying to act above it all. For every Gaffer yawning at the wedding there are thousands upon thousands of Americans who can't get enough. Our local news affiliate sent people over to report on the wedding for the past week. If you dare to read Yahoo reader comments on wedding stories, even the Amerika Fuck Yeah! crowd are talking about America and it's good friend the UK and how we will stand together bullshit and how great the Queen is.

Last night I tried to find some news on the tornadoes. CNN and Anderson Cooper were all about the wedding. Tried Fox News, they had a couple of minutes of breaking news to update on the weather and then switched back to SKY news so that we could watch British coverage.

I am amazed that the world is so into these two getting married. I find it fascinating that those in the UK are fine supporting a vestigial branch of government.

More like it shows how tawdry our society really is.

Not only did they meet long after Harry's birth but if there was any chance that Hewitt was Harry's father, he would demanding DNA tests and money everyday of the week. The guy is scum.

Harry takes after Diana's family. At Diana's funeral he looked like the twin brother of one of her sister's sons. He also looks a lot like Earl Spencer.

It's all estimation/guesswork/specualtion when you reach such high numbers. Should they not estimate because some people wont believe what they come up with? This is the media, they love throwing around numbers.
The only "authoritive" piece of research regarding record global television numbers I could find was this article which has exact figures (or as exact as they can be) correlated from agencies such as Nielsen saying the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics was watched by a global audience of 984m (593m of whom watched all 4 hours in it's entirety).

Yes because getting excited over a royal wedding once every 20+ years is so much more tawdrier than watching Jersey Shore, 16 and Pregnant and a bunch of overpaid goons running after a ball every Sunday and then spending hundreds of dollars on jerseys to show your support of said goons.

2 BILLION?!

WHAT?? NEVER

OMG I'M NOT WATCHING IT

*yaaaawn*

smh

Ps* Jay & Silentbob will be covering it live, so you know I'm going to be watching that!

Wow, everyone meet the most excited person in the thread.

I wish I was over there this week. But I do wonder what all the citizens think of the American's over there. They made a joke about it on the Today show earlier about it.

Silly me. I forgot to go into an OT thread act misserable and uninterested. What can I do to redeem myself, should I type *yawn*, is that edgy enough?

I'm in the mood to watch this now for some reason... Was gonna just watch it for the laugh but now i actually want to see it for the spectacle. Hell i was doing all the Wiki reading up and jesus it's a very meticulously planned event.

I just like all the uniforms, insignia, and rituals. Like being back in Victorian England. The Coldstream Guards are a favorite.
Love George MacDonald Fraser books. Especially the Flashman series. And the Patrick O'Brian
books featuring Jack Aubrey.

Still you are acting very extra as if those not interested fall into stereotype, many, me included have said we are watching.

They aint got shit on the Life Guards.

The only issue I had is with people in this thread saying stuff like people who watch this need better lives, how boring it is, who cares, it's tawdry when we spend time watching far worse shit on television.

Yeah but who's it gonna be? Anyone really think she has the balls to come out in the outlandish Alexander McQueen Ice Queen outfit that many seem to be predicting?
Frankly, I dont give a toss.

I know you're not being serious.

I genuinely do not understand why so many people find this interesting.

We have no royal system in the U.S. so people are just fascinated by this sort of thing. If we did, no one would watch that shit if it were aired, like they do with the William and Kate wedding.

What makes me confused more than anything is the (mostly American, but often not) 'all or nothing' stance that decrees the British monarchy a threat to the very fabric of democracy itself. I believe it comes from the same crowd that labels Obama 'left wing'/'socialist' because he isn't as right-wing as Rush Limbaugh.

Will be watching tomorrow. Unlike people doing their best impressions of ostriches in this thread, I can acknowledge the importance of tomorrow's event even if I don't in theory like the existence of the Royal Family.

I'm of a similar view. I've been annoyed by a lot of the faff in the runup to the event, but the event itself... it'll be a nice day, good to do something as a country, should be nice and golly and wish them the best and it's an important moment.

Tell the truth politics rarely diverge on to British monarchy so I'm not sure were you are getting that from.
