Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

Not sure if this goes here, but I guess I'll try asking anyway. So I'm currently on 8.1 and thinking to do a clean install for 10, the matter is that some 6 months ago a I got a code for a free year of Office 365(recently the Office applications updated to their 16 version), could I still make use of the remaining 6 months once I've installed 10?

Why wouldn't you? Office 365 is a subscription model, just like Xbox Live. Updating your OS doesn't invalidate your subscription to an entirely different product. :)

Oh thanks! I wasn't sure how it worked I thought it was like that but oddly I couldn't really tell, the thing that made me doubt is that the things allows to register 1 PC, 1 Mac and 1 Windows Phone, and I thought that in the case of PC it looked at the OS' validation or something. :X

I guess I'll install 10 on the week-end. :D

I can't get Netflix to play on Windows 10. I have the app from the store and it won't play any titles. It will say that streaming isn't available for this title. Does anyone know a solution for this issue? I even did a clean install of windows 10 to try to solve it but no luck. I must be missing something I need to install. Please help. This is the error code I get.

I'm in a fit of rage towards MS. I started my PC, launched iTunes, and then went downstairs to stream stuff from my PC. Halfway through the first stream, the picture and sound get weird. Then a few seconds later picture and sound gets cut off completely and the AppleTV ends up at the home screen.

I run upstairs to see Windows 10 install in-process. I was pissed.

The upgrade completed about an hour and a half later. I was calm again. Since I value security I figured it's best to get the latest security patches and updates before doing anything. I do that and then my PC is gets stuck at the spinning dots loading screen in the boot process.

I restored the system to the point prior to the update installs and I'm able to log into Windows. Ok great. Now I try to run the updates once more. Same issue returns.

After many hours debugging this shifty OS I'm going back to Windows 7. Fuck MS. And FUCK Windows 10.

Inherited an old computer from a friend to donate to work. She updated it from Vista to Windows 7 but the only disc should could find was a windows XP disc. I thought no problem I'll just put Windows 10 on it and do a system wipe and restore so we can give it away after taking off her personal files.

Windows 10 installation hanged repeatedly and would not install until I removed the DVD drive. It went through but hanged on the Windows Complete screen so I did a hard restart and it booted into Windows 10 and I get the Hi there! Lets get some basic things out of the way! and it hangs there again. No matter how many times I reboot I cannot get past this screen. The HD light stops flashing completely and it just sits there, I can move the mouse around but I cannot select anything.

After a bit I was able to get into the Advanced Recovery screen and let the system do a reset, again telling it to erase everything from the pc. The reset completed and it still hangs in the same spot. Only now I cannot access the Advanced Recovery screen because it tells me I need to log in with an Administrator account but there are no Administrator accounts on this PC.

I'm at a completely loss about what to do now. I can't go forward and I can't go back. Do we need to purchase Windows 7 again to get it working?

I'm so frustrated now. It's like I take two steps forward and a hundred steps back. I managed to get the DVD ISO i made to work but now it tells me Windows is not activated and it will not take the product key on the bottom of the PC. I called MS and they told me had to buy W10. My question before I just throw this computer away because I called HP and they told me the computer is obsolete so they don't make recovery disks or anything else for it. How long can I run 10 without it being activated?

I had Windows 8.1 Home installed and did a clean install of 10. Unfortunately by accident installed Pro instead of Home so my key is not accepted.

How can I download Windows 10 Home 64 bit, I have an ISO of Pro and when I use the Media Tool it only gives me the option to install Pro as well.

Any ideas?

Edit: When using Media Tool, I get the option for Windows 10 Home but its called Single Language. Firstly is it the same as usual Home and will my key work?

OK I'm officially fucking fed up with Windows 10. I've lost count of how many times the task bar just decides to not work, lose all it's icons and become unresponsive, or the start menu just refuses to work at all. How was this considered ready for release?

I'm a new Windows 10 user (just upgraded from 7, though I had this issue there too). I'm trying to figure out how to set up different user accounts, but have it so each account has totally separate access to files and apps. In particular, the Bluestacks Android emulator. I want it so that each account has to do a separate install of the app and each virtual Android tablet then has its own separate device ID.

On my wife's MacBook, it was as simple as creating the new user accounts. But she's getting sick of me always using her Mac, so I need to figure out how to do it for Windows. I've searched online and found nothing that works.

Any tips?

Theoretically, it's an app issue and not really a Windows 10 issue. Most applications nowadays (well, since Windows XP introduced user accounts and user spaces) give you an option to either install the application for all users, or just this (the one on whose account the installation is launched) account. Moreover, most applications keep settings and user data in user folder, so each user can configure the program as he wishes without affecting other users.

Everything that's inside the C:/Users/%username%/ folder is inaccessible for other users (unless they have admin privileges). Everything outside that is accessible for all users.

So I'm having an issue with my mother in laws email. I set up her penteldata email in outlook, and can send and receive emails just fine. I set up outlook as the default email client for Windows 10 also.

The problem is using the "send link / page by email option in I.E. It opens an outlook email just fine and populates it. She clicks send and it goes away as expected. The problem is that the mail never actually sends unless you open Outlook. It then automatically does send/receive. I've never had to keep outlook open before. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Having a problem with the major update, my internet suddenly won't work. Troubleshooting gives me this “one or more network protocols are missing from this computer”. Made the mistake to delete the old backup. I also tried every fix on tenforums and not one worked. Also tried to reset my w10 which was a bad decision. I'm desperate here..

Just thought I'd share a tip with you guys in case someone had the same problem as me. I was having an issue with my theme not syncing. I checked my account and my Microsoft account was logged in and everything. When I went to sync settings, the sync settings were grayed out. After some searching, someone in the microsoft forum said that logging out of the Microsoft store, then logging back in worked for him. Sure enough, this worked for me. I had this issue for months, but I was too lazy to fix it until now.

So I bought a Surface Pro 3. I put down that I'd be using it in English but otherwise Finnish settings. Now it set my OS language to be Finnish and (this is the weird part) the audio devices are in Danish. Any way to fix this or should I just put it back to factory settings since I've had the device for only a few hours?

E: fixed display language, audio devices still in Danish.
E2: apparently you can just rename them. That was easy

Memory leak? Fully updated?

so the fall update has failed to update multiple times and I havent been able to install the latest nvidia graphics drivers.

good stuff :(.

Uhh, yesterday I made the mistake of believing the Microsoft store was something else than a flaming piece of shit, silly me.

Context -
So I wanted to offer a game to my mother and as she have already 100%ed Mahjong Artifacts 1, the sequel was in my line of sight.
Issue 1 - The trial version download failed. Out of my rear end I think the store wants to erroneously download the full version and the process evidently fail. Maybe I'm wrong.
Issue 1b - I'm stupid and buy the game anyway when a sane person would see that the stars are not aligned right for that.

ISSUE -
Issue 2 (THE BIG ONE) - Well I have the full game. I think. I'm pretty sure of it. Buttt... no metro icon.

In fact the metro icon was blank, I deleted it in order to re-activate it from the app search, it seemed the logical thing to do... but the app while indeed being installed is not found when I search for it, windows 10 only shows me the first game. So I'm stuck with :

- No metro icon for the game.
- Only possible to launch it from the my games section of the store.
- I can't find how to uninstall it in order to reinstall and pray this was an isolated issue.
- Truth be told I have managed to somehow place a shortcut to the game on my taskbar but the icon is blank and I don't really fancy keeping it that way.

Please Gaf, send help.

So out of the blue, something crazy is happening with my ram and I cannot figure out what.

I have 16GB of DDR4. For some reason, my committed ram just keeps climbing higher and higher until eventually I'll be playing a game and I'll get a low memory warning.

The thing is, in resource monitor, it doesn't add up. I don't understand.

OeaBsck.png

Anyone have any ideas what I can do? As you can see in the screen shot, right now I have 8.5GB committed, and this is after my PC has been running for a little over a day. As you can also see, if you now add up my in use/available values, they don't come close to 16GB anymore.

I am having issues with the taskbar being cutoff after resuming from hibernation on a thinkpad yoga 12 I have had for about a week.
If I hibernate the pc by start menu - power - hibernate or by pressing the power button then the clock/calendar on the right side of the taskbar is cutoff when I wake the pc.
I can fix it by clicking the power icon or by turning tablet mode on then off again but thats a pain to do every time I wake the pc.
Now the taskbar is not cutoff upon wake if I hibernate the pc by closing the lid. But that means the pc will hibernate every time I close the lid and I dont want that.
This is on Windows 10 64 bit. I have updated every driver I can think of including the gpu (hd 5500) and intel chipset and the lenovo power management software.

Is there a way to updates Windows 10 on a 32GB of storage PC? I just got one of those cheap lower end models with 2GB RAM/32GB of storage and aside from the ass performance I also can't update Windows.

Whenever I try to update it takes forever to "Download" and install everything and then it says Windows 10 cannot be updated because there isn't enough free space or something to that extent. Then I go and clear my "old" Windows Update files to free up space and try again it and repeats the process of downloading everything and saying you don't have enough space.

Taskbar start menu and Cortana stopped working. I've tried the powershell thing but it Does not work for me.I've rebuilt my index and even system restored.

Anyone else have this issue?

Anyone else have a problem where Windows suddenly decides to lose random files, folders and shortcuts from your desktop? Second time this happened to me, first one was just after the November update. The files are nowhere to be found. Avast or Windows defender did not find any viruses. Maybe time to format my SSD and do a fresh install.

Hey guys, I have a weird problem that I haven't been able to solve.

I own a set of Creative Gigaworks G500 speakers. They're pretty old, probably almost 10 years old. However, they work and sound great. The problem is that no applications in Windows 10 will use the subwoofer. I get sound from the speakers, but nothing from the sub. The strange part is that when I'm in the "Configure Speakers" section of Playback Devices in Windows, when I test the subwoofer, I get a thundering boom out of it. So it's there, and works, but for some reason, I cannot get this to work outside of that screen.

I've tried removing and reinstalling the device, checked cables and device settings. Nothing seems to fix it. There are no drivers available for this device, due to the age of the speakers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey GAF, my girlfriend has a bit of a problem - I don't think this it's neccessarily Windows 10 related, but I didn't want to open a new thread, and couldn't find any other general PC troubleshooting one.
So she got a new Laptop (this one) and the WiFi acts up. It's connected to our home WiFi (full bars) and surfing and downloading work flawless, but the thing just can't upload anything. Text-only emails from Thunderbird work, but as soon as there's the smallest attachment they stop at 96%. Can't upload pics to abload etc., can't attach pics to facebook messages (or smoothly scroll down the news feed), speedtests crap out at the uploading part - all browsers show the same. Other devices (including her old laptop) are connected to the same WiFi, and work flawlessly. It worked once these last two days, when I was literally holding the laptop up next to the router, but that doesn't work anymore either.
When I use my cell as mobile hotspot everything works fine, so I'm kinda guessing router problem, but I couldn't find anything there (it's a nice FritzBox, dualband, and always chooses disruption-free channels, so I guess that can't be the problem). As I said, every other device has no problems.
I researched and the WiFi card seems to be a bit crap (Qualcomm Atheros QCA61X4), but why would it work with my cell if it was busted? Drivers are up to date.
I checked everything my Google-Fu let me check (really not a computer guy), and I guess we'll just send it back if we can't solve the problem today. Windows sees no problems with the connection or the card. I repaired and updated Windows, tried safe mode, updated drivers, meddled with the energy options for the laptop and the card, I really don't know anymore.

Also, the ipconfig/all. I have no idea what any of this means (sorry for it all being in German, will translate if you need me to).

I've been having a lot of issues with Blue Screen of Death for a while now. They can happen every couple days or maybe just once a week. It's been happening since about November. I thought it was maybe that large update that Windows 10 got then but I'm not sure. I built my PC almost exactly a year ago and it was running fine. It's only the last 4 months or so it has been happening and I haven't managed to sort it out.

It could be my GPU but that's fully updated to 16.1.1 drivers. I might try going back to Catalyst drivers. I also installed 16GB ram so will try putting my old 8GB sticks back in. I have just updated my bios. I've read not to do that unless you are having a lot of issues. I was on version F4 (H97M-D3H) and i've just updated it to F7. I guess a clean install will need to be done too.

Other than that is there any other suggestions on what to try? I can't seem to find any error logs. When I boot into safe mode and go to Device Manager my monitor has a yellow ! mark beside it but it's not like i can update drivers or anything for it.

generally my windows 10 install works well - for normal programs. But anything that is native W10 - like cortana, W10 apps like plex, or even the damn calculator - are just super slow and laggy.

Is there anything that can be done to fix that?

So I just upgraded a day ago, and for the most part it has been painless. There is one annoyances... my clock seems to be ahead/faster. I'm having to manually change the time quite often.

I've tried changing the site which the clock synchronizes to, disabling auto sync, and changing Windows Time to auto in services.

This wasn't an issue on 7. Any suggestions?

Have you checked the windows time service in services.msc? Make sure that not stopped.

Yeah, I've restarted the service a few times with the same outcome

"Usually, this issue is caused by Windows Time service corrupt. You can try to take following steps to troubleshoot this issue.

Click Start.
Type ‘cmd’ in the search bar.
Right click Command Prompt in the list and choose “Run as Administrator”
In the Command prompt type the following commands one at a
time and press Enter.

a. net stop w32time

b. w32tm /unregister

c. w32tm /register

d. net start w32time

e. w32tm /resync

Then, please restart the computer to test the issue again."

Since it's windows 10 right click the start button and just hit command prompt (admin)

Try that and make sure you have the most recent chipset drivers.

Perhaps your PC is overclocked ;)

I know this is late but it sounds like a router issue. If you have QoS on your router somewhere check and see if it has WMM and it's enabled.

Should also delete the saved profile on the PC for the wifi, have it re find it and re set it up.

Unless your wifi hotspot is using something like Wireless G and your Router is using say Wireless N and she might have settings on it that are messed up or maybe just borked on a certain wireless range.

:/

Edit: Forgot I had changed from time.windows.com to time.nist.gov. Re-did the steps above without issue. Hopefully it will stick.

Edit 2: Didn't work. I updated the chipset driver as well :(

Hey, superthanks for the reply. I kinda did something on my router having to do with priorities and whatnot, and set the profile up from scratch, and what do you know, it worked! I mean, it works right now (it used to work for a day sraight since we bought it occasionally), but we're quite happy right now :)
Since I made that post we got a new laptop (same model) from amazon and I had a loooong conversation with a very helpful Fritzbox dude, but nothing helped, so fingers crossed!

The last few days both the start button and keyboard shortcut have become unresponsive after my computer being turned on for a few hours, have to CTRL/ALT/DEL to turn off, how do I fix this?

Hope this is the right place since Edge is part of Windows 10.

When log into certain websites, such as T-Mobile or Chase, I input the password and click log in. It waits a few seconds like it is logging in then shows the log in screen again.

I can go use Chrome to log into the websites.
I did clear data cache, browsing history, etc.

Any other things I can try?

Thanks,
Da Bears

Is there a way to force the Groove W10 app update my collection? Really frustrating when I add music via the Groove browser app at work during the day, but there's no way to get it to show up in the app until it decides it's ready.

Even the W10M app is faster *and* has a sync button.

Anyone had problems with resolution which does not fit to screen?
I am having this kind of problem now using an LG 22MN43 TVMonitor and GTX960 on my i7 8GB Ram machine. Done all the updates, chipset, card and the windows ones but i m having a black vertical stripe on the left and NVDIA Control Center say that it scans at 58Hz only while at 1920x1080.

Any clues?

Is it just me, or is Virtualbox on a Windows host kind of broken?

I'm having trouble getting 3d acceleration to work with a Windows 10 host and either Windows 10 or Linux Mint guest. I'm running Virtualbox 5.0.18 with the newest guest additions. When I start a VM with 3d acceleration enabled, it crashes with a "the memory could not be read" error.

I've had issues with Virtualbox running Linux guests on a Windows host in the past, but I was hoping Virtualbox 5 would improve on that.

Looks like I'll have to use VMware player instead. The interface and the feature set isn't as nice, but at least everything works...

Had Windows Store apps update issues on my current user account, so I decided to create a new one for the supposed problems to appear.

But while logged in the new account, Windows Store icon does not appear at all on the Win10 Start menu. Even when I reset the cache or reinstall Windows apps through Powershell, it refuses to install. Either the message that Appmanifest.xml is missing or that the Store process is paused. Even though I see that the xml files are created in the process.

Cant believe how that platform is advertised for gaming.

I read that the best solution is to clean install Windows again, though I doubt even that will work. This feels worse than the Win95 days

I guess this is the thread to ask this in. For the past month or so, my Mail app no longer functions. It either crashes on startup, or as soon as I click on anything. There doesn't seem to be a way to uninstall and reinstall it. Suggestions?

Try this:

Microsoft really has to either get their shit together and fix all those problems with apps (hanging/crashing on launch or not launching at all) or build in the option to redownload all/selected apps somewhere in Settings/Store. I find it unacceptable that everyday users have to fix apps on their own using Powershell commands with administrator privileges.

Hmm, nope. It didn't uninstall it. Still crashing.

Hey guys not sure if this has been discussed already but my laptop is super slow and when I open task manager disk usage is at 100% and a bunch of programs are running all at once. How do I fix this?

Does anyone else have a problem where it just wont shut down?
You select Power off, it does everything it needs to, even puts the monitor into stand by mode, but the PC itself just stays on, until I have to power it off manually.

Its as if it turns everything off but cant tell the PC to turn off.

I need help.

New hard drive. Installing it with a thumb drive. I get to the install screen and go through the directions. Agreeing to pro or home version, terms, custom install ect.

I get to a screen that has this:

Status

Copying Windows files
Getting files ready for installation
Installing features
Installing updates
Finishing up

It goes through all of them and restarts. All good, but when it restarts it takes me right back to the start asking me to start the installation again.

I'm going insane here.
