Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

After troubleshooting my Windows 7 which just wouldn't begin downloading Win 10 for most of the last month, I have FINALLY been able to download and install Win 10 today.

And I immediately regretted it. It won't recognize the actual native resolution of my primary monitor, no matter what I try - it displays in 2560x1080, while it should be 2560x1440. I checked, and the highest offered resolution is 2560x1080. I have the latest AMD drivers installed, and the AMD CC panel also doesn't let me select anything above 2560x1080. Acer doesn't offer monitor drivers for Windows 10 yet. Good times.

I need help.

New hard drive. Installing it with a thumb drive. I get to the install screen and go through the directions. Agreeing to pro or home version, terms, custom install ect.

I get to a screen that has this:

Status

Copying Windows files
Getting files ready for installation
Installing features
Installing updates
Finishing up

It goes through all of them and restarts. All good, but when it restarts it takes me right back to the start asking me to start the installation again.

I'm going insane here.

Try removing the USB drive when it restarts the computer so that it doesn't try to boot off it again. It's generally smart enough not to do this but something could be going wrong?

I'm not sure if this is a problem I have specifically with win 10 but it happened while I was playing Fallout 4. The Bluetooth headset I was using ran low on battery so I turned it off while still in game. Apparently either fallout 4 or windows 10 doesn't like that since it froze on me. I couldn't get task manager to display since the screen was black except for the task bar at the bottom. Had to extend to a second monitor and use process explorer to force quit fo4. Almost came close to hard rebooting my PC, something I don't think I've done since vista.
I've had other instances where other games would freeze on me while turning by headset on or off too.

Likely a form of your USB port drivers running into an issue causing the whole PC to lock up. I get frequent lockups when booting because my USB ports from the Mobo have some sort of issue with my devices. Once it boots properly it's alright, but sometimes there are exceptions. I actually think the issue is coming from my USB headset, but can't confirm yet.

I don't know what happened, but I restarted and had 2 cmd pop up on start. But couldn't see what they did before disappearing.

Probably already answered in this thread, but I installed Windows 10 on one of my laptops and now it will not wake from hibernation. It looks like this is a known problem, but I haven't found a good solution yet. Does anybody here have one? Laptop is an HP G60.

Is there anyway to fix the mouse wheel scroll bug? My mouse wheel craps out on me on W10. It either skips or rolls once in the opposite direction.

That's usually just a hiccup in the restore process. You can power down the notebook completely (usually by holding down the power button for 5-10 sec.), and it should boot up with the option to either delete restore data or to attempt restore. Choose "delete", and you should be fine.

Alternatively, either your user profile or Windows itself is corrupt and it'll be harder to fix the system.

I want to upgrade without deleting any of my files. What options do I need to check when I am ready to do this?
Windows 10 does that by default. However, I'd backup anything important beforehand. I'd also detach any other hard drives you have in the system just in case.

Is anyone experiencing issues with hibernation? Sometimes both my laptops refuse to hibernate. Like, the screen dims but the lights are still on. Pressing a button instantly brings up the login menu. It doesn't matter how long I wait as I've had both laptops die (from 100%) after I thought it hibernated.

It happens way more often on my personal laptop.

This never happened when I was on Win 8. Both have SSDs.

Didn't see this until now. It does this every single time it tries to hibernate. >:|

Are you pressing a key to launch from USB when it restarts? If you see that screen, just don't do anything and it let it boot from the HDD. Since you changed your BIOS boot order to USB first, that will keep happening.

With SSDs it's recommended that you do not use Hibernate. Have you tried Sleep?

Hibernate might not be working properly, so maybe use sleep mode instead. Fast startup can also be a problem, so if you're having startup problems, try disabling it.

I'm trying to install Windows 10, but the upgrade tool doesn't work... When I select 'upgrade', it just closes the tool and nothing happens.

So I've downloaded the official exe that forces it, and now I get the message that my monitor is not suitable for Windows 10. It's a Dell (U2414H), only a few years old, use hdmi output. Don't know why I'm getting this and how I can fix this. Is this a common issue, anything I can do?

What official exe did you download? Are you talking about the ISO creation tool?

Hey guys, I'm a little confused post W10 upgrade from W7. I've got a SSD on my rig and it used to take <5 seconds once i logged in on Windows 7 to get to my desktop (granted shit was still loading but at least I could move my mouse around, open my browser while my startup programs loaded in).

Post W10 upgrade, when I hit enter on the login screen, it takes a good 10-15 seconds before I can even see my desktop...It would be one thing if all the programs it needed to load were already loaded, but they are only being loaded when the desktop is being shown. Is there some setting i'm missing?
To clarify: I enter my credentials, hit enter, I get the circular loading icon for about 10-15 seconds (this part used to take <5 seconds), then my desktop shows up and then the startup programs load in.

Check the BIOS and make sure it's set to ACHI.

Not really desirable. I prefer to boot up with everything like I left them, but there's a 16 hour gap in between so the battery will be dead by then. Don't really care about the extra writes degrading the SSD lifespan.

Hi guys - I apologize if this has already been asked dozens of times. Please keep in mind I'm a total n00b when it comes to this type of stuff.

My father has a desktop running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. I would like to replace his HDD and have already bought it. After that is over I'd like to get Windows 10 running on his machine. Now my father lost the COA a long time ago. Can I replace his HDD and then download Windows 10 all without knowing the COA? If so, any recommendations for free HDD movin' software? Thanks in advance. I wanted to get him squared away with a free copy of Windows 10 while there is still time.

If the old HDD still works, upgrade that to win7 to win10 and that system will now be able to have win10 installed again (on the new hdd) without ever having to put in a key again. (Unless you change mobo)

I don't know if you actually need to go through with the entire upgrade, I don't know when it makes it's hardware ID List.

You should always know what your Windows key is, so your best bet is to extract it beforehand. There are tons of tools out there that'll do that, but Hiren's Boot CD is an indispensable tool, and the one there works fine.

For HDD cloning software, the ones I've been using are Acronis TrueImage and Macrium Reflect. I don't remember if Acronis is available for free, but Macrium is for personal use.

Thanks for your thoughts, CSJ and 4Tran. I was concerned that if I upgraded his machine to Windows 10 and then did the HDD swap that it would invalidate the "free" version.

This is a new one to me, Windows 10.

Trying to remove properties from a JPEG and get an error "The action can't be completed because the file is open in COM Surrogate"

Same error if I choose the create a copy with all possible properties removed.

Workaround I found online is to End the COM Surrogate task with the dialog box open and it can make the copy or save the file again via MS Paint. Anyone know of a permanent fix to this or ran across this before?

Not sure what update caused this =/

Okay I figured this issue out and it is a pretty stupid bug. Apparently if you have auto-hide on your taskbar enabled, it causes windows to slow down up to 30 seconds when logging in. As soon as I disabled it, my login became as fast as it was in Windows 7. Apparently this has been a bug since the preview for windows came out and has never been fixed.

Hey everyone, I would like some help with doing a clean install of Windows 10, from Windows 8.1.

According to the sources I could find (this, and the W10 section in the GAF build a PC thread), the best way to do this is from a USB flash drive.

However, they only USB stick that I have is one that I turned into a USB recovery drive (one that I probably wouldn't know how to use and fortunately never had to). Is it possible to use this USB drive for putting the W10 ISO and motherboard drivers on? And if so, should I wipe it first, and how?

Yeah that's possible. I use a utility called ISO to USB.
http://www.isotousb.com/

The utility will automatically format and put the ISO files on there for you.

Have you seen this? This came out in the past week.

Sorry if this has been answered, but I couldn't find it. I'm a PC noob. I upgraded my Dell laptop from 8.1 to 10. It worked for a couple hours, but now it won't boot. It says your PC has ran into a problem and needs to restart. Its the driver_irgl_not_less or equal message.

Anybody run into this problem?

That message should also include a file name, which would let us know possibly which driver is causing the problem. If you have any usb peripherals then unplug those too.

Check support.dell.com for all the latest Windows 10 drivers for your system and any new BIOS update as well.

Help! I upgraded to windows 10 yesterday, and everything seemed to work fine. Today, the pc does not recognize any USB mouse or keyboard, regardless of USB port. Plugging them in after boot doesnt work either. What have I wrought?

EDIT: both work in BIOS, just not on the desktop.

EDIT: alright, I seem to have solved it by plugging in a second keyboard, after which the keyboard and mouse fully worked again even after rebooting. From what I read online this might have been an USB driver issue? Is there anything I need to do to prevent this from happening again, or has it solved itself?

Once the drivers are downloaded and installed, you're good.

When trying to cast or drag the Movies & TV app over to my TV, which is connected using the Wireless Display Adapter,  I receive the following error:

Can't play.

Your TV or monitor does not support the copy protection technology required to play this content.

0xc00d7159.

My TV is a Samsung with a model number of UN32EH4003F, which is listed as being HDCP enabled. Am I missing something else here?

I also tested this on a monitor that I know is HDCP compliant and I received the same error message.

I am able to mirror both Netflix and the Movies & TV app off of my Lumia 640. Both my phone and computer are in the insider fast ring.

Is the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter v2 not compatible with copy-protected content?

Okay, what's the best way to disable automatic updates but still give you an easy option to update when you want to? There's nothing worse than coming into the office and seeing your computer rebooted with all your windows, console prompts, etc closed. The least Microsoft can do if they want to force updates is to take a snapshot of my current working state and then restore it after the computer reboots.

Do you have Windows 10 Pro? There's a way to set Windows Update to "download automatically and let me choose when to install," but I'm on mobile and can't link the instructions atm.
Otherwise, only option is to buy Windows 10 Pro.

I'm not sure if we are referring to the same thing but I can "choose" as far as telling Windows to automatically reboot at a certain time or to reboot now.

The Pro versions of Windows enable this cool thing called "Group Policy", which is normally used by admins to configure and lock down employees' computers.
In Windows 10 Pro, Group Policy can be used to configure Windows Update beyond what the update settings normally offer. On my laptop, updates will automatically download but they never install or reboot my computer without my permission.

Okay so I'm having a really frustrating issue on my computer of late. Basically my computer takes ages to boot up, staying on the logo loading screen for hours even while it loads. When it does eventually load everything is fine and dandy, no apparent issues that I can see as to why it caused such a long load. Yesterday it did the same thing, yet wouldn't let me actually shut down my computer by choosing the option in the start menu, nor would it let me interact with anything explorer.exe based.

I did some googling and apparently one solution was turning off fast boot. I checked my power options and there is no fast boot option, so I'm lost there. I opted into the preview build hoping that may fix my weird update corrupted issue and it did initially, but is now once again taking forever to boot. I got into my computer just before and everything seemed fine yet one of my drives was apparently not responding all of a sudden. I checked for driver updates but nothing came from that and the dialog box froze as well.

I'm scratching my head trying to think what could be the issue and am lost. I feel like my best chance is to just wipe my OS ssd and start fresh.

Ah... too bad I'm on Home, although I am not having any problems with update.

If you still want to disable Fast Startup (highly recommended if you're experiencing issues), you have to go into Power Options, select "Choose what the power buttons do" in the side bar, and then click on "Change settings that are currently unavailable". The "Turn on fast startup" option should show up under Shutdown settings.

The problem with Fast Startup is that it doesn't perform a full shutdown, so you're not booting up from scratch. It does speed up your bootup time, but I don't think the tradeoff is worth it. If you do use Fast Startup, know that restarting will still shutdown properly, so do that instead of shutting down if Windows encounters some sort of glitch.

In your particular case it seems that you may have more serious problems, so a wipe and reinstall might be warranted.

It seems to be a far more serious issue now. I'm at the point where one of my HDD isn't appearing properly and if I try to forma and make a USB ISO it just will not complete. Also apparently I can't even run programs to install either.

Side note, where the hell is the windows 10 ISO? I keep getting windows telling me to download some shitty software, I just want the damn ISO.

Edit - okay so it seems there is Si etching far worse going on. I put Windows 10 on usb and tried to format my computer, however all that happened was it appearing on the screen with the typical purple installation screen but nothing else. Just a blank colour, and I let it sit there for an hour with nothing happening. What the shit is going on...

A couple bugs recently developed for me:
1. Getting "the stub received bad data" when I first try to open some Windows apps like Onscreen Keyboard or Magnifier.
2. Windows Store is forever stuck checking for updates
