I had the folder, now it's gone. I'm trying to figure out if it's downloading stuff anyway, but not sure where to see that. I did notice this using my bandwith is that good?

So.

Is there anyway to force this bitch to download yet?

It's the 29th here in Australia and I don't see shit happening.

Hidden folder is at 140mb.

One place you can look is C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\, as that's where some people mentioned where it's temporarily storing stuff before moving it to the $Windows.~BT folder.

Can I delay the install? I signed up for it on the work computer but I'm a little skeptical now if I should go through with it, don't want things to break.

Once it's downloaded, it'll apparently wait for confirmation from you that you want to upgrade rather than doing it automatically.

That folder is 3.18gb with only 346 files. My Windows.~BT folder did show up again, but it only has 1 folder in it and nothing else. I guess it's making progress.

Mine only has 34 files at 513MB in the SoftwareDist/Download folder so it's defo getting there for you!

Did some research and found a redit thread mentioning that what you mentioned. And i guess i do have that file/folder in the SoftwareDistrubtion.

ok:

so i'm currently
* downloading an 8.1 installer ISO to create a bootable USB drive (via Bootcamp on my Mac ... )
* to do a fresh install of Win 8.1 (on an entirely new, just unwrapped SSD)
* which i will then enter my legit Windows 8.0 key into
* and have it perform all the Windows Update stuff
* and eventually upgrade me a relatively clean Windows 10 after roughly 20 reboots tomorrow

is anything about this plan super dumb? any of these steps bound to fail?
(like me losing the free upgrade due to the new SSD? the 8.0 key not working on 8.1?)

can i do the same to the Windows 7 machine of my girlfriend's mother, later?
(i.e. do a fresh Windows 7 install on a new SSD in her laptop, have it upgrade to Windows 10 via windows update later) ?

it seems to me like this will be the soundest way to go about it, seeing as i want to have a relatively fresh install, yet can't be arsed to either do an upgrade onto my current system and THEN replace the ssd, maybe having to re-authenticate my license... or wait another week or so.

I have the folder. It started at 140mb, than I left the computer for a couple hours, came back and now it stopped at 3.28 gb.

Anyone else at 3gb?

EDIT: So between me seeing it stop at 3 gb for a half hour, than taking a screencap and posting it; it has now jumped an extra 2 gb. That's one sneaky Microsoft-ware download

I have the folder like you guys, but I'm wondering if the folder itself can be loaded onto a USB stick and then used to upgrade different PC's that are elligble instead of waiting for each of them to download.

If you don't want to download to multiple PCs, there will be a way later this week to download once and install to multiple PCs.

Don't try to use this folder to do so, it likely won't work.

WTF BBQ?

So I have to HDDs with two different versions of Windows installed.

My Windows 8.1 doesn't have the folder.

My Windows 10 Insider Edition has the folder. Wasn't expecting that. Says it was created on July 10th.

Edit: A new folder just appears on my Windows 8.1 install. It's a series of letters and numbers. It was created two minutes ago. This might be it.

How does the update from technical preview work? I installed the preview from a genuine 8.1 version. Now Windows update says Windows 10 home and activated. Does this mean I'm good to go? Some things still don't work though ( like the mail app)

Ah ok. I appear to have it.

Does that mean I can install Windows 10 right now? :o

The size of the folder is 5.88gb, and 4.36gb on disk.

Yes, you can't use the setup in the folder but you can make your own iso from the Install.esd file you can find in /Sources and then do an upgrade right now. That's what I'm currently doing.

If you don't know how to make the iso, follow these instructions. https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/3ee1gx/windows_10_10240_esd_download_here/ctemjfk

I love how every time it installs updates automatically it cripples my computer until I restart it. Time to go through that irritating process to disable this crap. Sigh. Also, I take it classicshell is here to stay. I had hopes they would make a start menu option with a desktop in mind. They had one several versions ago, but like update options it's vanished as new builds came along. Speed increase is nice though when it's not pestering updates.

edit: changing everything to meted connections seems to be an easier fix on the update thing.

Don't read into the numbers too much. There are a thousands variables which could cause different people to be seeing different things.
