Someone on reddit said clear out your \windows\softwaredistribution\downloads folder and that worked for me
This works for me too I am now installing Windows 10 as well. First it downloaded 5.4 gigabytes of data in the software update thingSomeone on reddit said clear out your windowssoftwaredistributiondownloads folder and that worked for me
Doing this might work. It started the install for me.

Getting this screen every time I restart:
It is just on the C: drive for me. But it is a hidden folder, so you would need to enable viewing of hidden system folders.
indeed.
Thought this was pretty cute:
I did that but it's still not showing up, not sure what's going on.

The upgrade to Windows 10 window appeared and now I am on a black screen where it's telling me it's upgrading windows after restarting
Reddit method worked here too. 2.6gb isn't a bit low though?
Nah. Mine went through that whole process. It's just prepared for installation, it didn't actually let me do it yet.My download finished, now it says preparing for installation. Word? Maybe it will?

I'm sure this has been answered before (hopefully by MS), but I have to ask.
If I install this now when it's available, over my W8 install, will I be able to use a CD key MS gives me for W10 to do a brand new fresh install of W10 on my drive in the future?
Upgrade and clean install done, time to set everything up.
Maybe you're lucky. I'm just gonna go play some Rocket League and try back later.AwwLucky UKers already installing it by now.
Ah, not sure then.I did that but it's still not showing up, not sure what's going on.

works indeed
for other people
step one C:/windows/softwaredistribution/downloads clear out or rename the folder
step two start CMD as admin and enter wuauclt.exe /updatenow
do this now it started to update
If you update can you clean install later? Id love to do a clean but I need to transfer files over to an external first, which will take a week or so.
There's no need to do that. Just go to Settings -> Update & security -> Recovery -> Reset this PC
Did you do it from an ISO or from in Windows 10 itself?
The command line trick refuses to work on my desktop. It's on Window 8.1 and has every possible update. I deleted the SoftwareDistribution folder, but that didn't work either.
Woah just tried this and it's working for me too. Windows 10 is downloading now. Success! Now to see if it actually allows me to upgrade.
I think it's just luck of the draw. Wouldn't be surprised if the people the various tricks are working for have had the switch flipped and are in a particular wave. The command line trick refuses to work on my desktop. How does upgrading affect secondary drives? Does it only make changes to the C: drive?
Windows 10 will associate your Windows 8 product key with your Microsoft account when you 1st setup Windows 10. Afterwards, if you clean install Windows 10 and then sign up with your Microsoft Account, you will be automatically activated! No need to enter product keys anymore!
So is this the Microsoft account Windows 8 asked about when I installed? I don't keep any of that active or connected to my Windows 8 environment now. When I install Windows 10, will it give me the option to create a Microsoft account to associate the Windows 8 key with Windows 10 from there?
My download finished, now it says preparing for installation. Word? Maybe it will?
Yup! Exactly! Create a new Microsoft Account during the Windows 10 install process or sign in with an existing Microsoft Account that you created with Windows 8, up to you.
USB ISO.
For me the Windows Update Fixit worked. After that run the cmd thing and you are good to go.The command line trick refuses to work on my desktop. It's on Window 8.1 and has every possible update. I deleted the SoftwareDistribution folder, but that didn't work either.
