Figured out how to determine the size of that folder. The size of that folder on my laptop is currently 6.23GB and 4.70GB on disk Now to wait until the download starts.

Someone on reddit said clear out your \windows\softwaredistribution\downloads folder and that worked for me

Can confirm this worked for me, downloading win 10 now

Getting this screen every time I restart:

This works for me too I am now installing Windows 10 as well. First it downloaded 5.4 gigabytes of data in the software update thing

The upgrade to Windows 10 window appeared and now I am on a black screen where it's telling me it's upgrading windows after restarting

Reddit method did something:

Edit: Just realized that by following the Reddit method, it deleted the pre-cached Windows 10 pre-load that I had and is now re-downloading it.Ok....at least I have a decent internet connection, otherwise these 5.0 GB+ would've been a nightmare to redownload all over again!

works indeed

for other people

step one C:/windows/softwaredistribution/downloads clear out or rename the folder

step two start CMD as admin and enter wuauclt.exe /updatenow

do this now it started to update

I'm sure this has been answered before (hopefully by MS), but I have to ask.

If I install this now when it's available, over my W8 install, will I be able to use a CD key MS gives me for W10 to do a brand new fresh install of W10 on my drive in the future?

Upgrade and clean install done, time to set everything up.

Windows 10 will associate your Windows 8 product key with your Microsoft account when you 1st setup Windows 10. Afterwards, if you clean install Windows 10 and then sign up with your Microsoft Account, you will be automatically activated! No need to enter product keys anymore!

If you update can you clean install later? Id love to do a clean but I need to transfer files over to an external first, which will take a week or so.

Woah just tried this and it's working for me too. Windows 10 is downloading now. Success! Now to see if it actually allows me to upgrade.

The command line trick refuses to work on my desktop. It's on Window 8.1 and has every possible update. I deleted the SoftwareDistribution folder, but that didn't work either.

Im up and running. No major issues so far upgrading from 7

Quick notes so far
  1. New start menu while not as shit as 8 isnt as immediately great as 7. Once I get around to customizing it it should be fine. Default icons are all bullshit
  2. Wallpapers were confusing me at first. On this computer I have 2 1600x900 monitors. In 7 I had a slideshow with mainly 1920x1080 wallpapers that used "stretch" mode to downsample to 1600x900. Windows 7 would then show the same image on both moniters. 10 at first was taking the 1 image and stretching it across to the extended display. I tried playing with the options and eventually tried Fit which turned out awesome. Now it grabs 2 wallpapers from my slideshow folder and puts 1 on each monitor. When I click Next Desktop Background it rotates only one of them, alternating. Really awesome
  3. Final Fantasy XI worked perfectly nearly immediately. Upon trying to run windows informed me that it needed DirectPlay installed, let it install and BAM, ffxi running flawlessly
  4. had to reload motioninjoy drivers (for PS2 controller mode for FFXI) these reloaded fine based on the DS3tool install (the drivers didnt carry across during the upgrade)

It didn't work for me either, but after waiting like 5 min and then clicking on Check for updates, it started redownloading the entire update (5.0 GB+)

Is it possible to re-download Windows 10 somehow (via W 8.1/GWX)? I have it downloaded (~6 GB) and ready but I realized I used the wrong language in Windows when it downloaded, so I have a Windows 10 ESD with the wrong language.

I think it's just luck of the draw. Wouldn't be surprised if the people the various tricks are working for have had the switch flipped and are in a particular wave.

So is this the Microsoft account Windows 8 asked about when I installed? I don't keep any of that active or connected to my Windows 8 environment now. When I install Windows 10, will it give me the option to create a Microsoft account to associate the Windows 8 key with Windows 10 from there?

Yup! Exactly! Create a new Microsoft Account during the Windows 10 install process or sign in with an existing Microsoft Account that you created with Windows 8, up to you.

Whenever I reboot I'm stuck on a black screen with just a mouse cursor. And so it begins... :(

For me the Windows Update Fixit worked. After that run the cmd thing and you are good to go.

Edit: If you want to know that the files are getting downloaded, check the network activity in the task manager and look after svchost.exe
