Hey guys just a heads up if you can't find your product key for some reason and need to pull it off your computer you can create a notepad file with this code

Set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
MsgBox ConvertToKey(WshShell.RegRead("HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\DigitalProductId"))

Function ConvertToKey(Key)
Const KeyOffset = 52
i = 28
Chars = "BCDFGHJKMPQRTVWXY2346789"
Do
Cur = 0
x = 14
Do
Cur = Cur * 256
Cur = Key(x + KeyOffset) + Cur
Key(x + KeyOffset) = (Cur \ 24) And 255
Cur = Cur Mod 24
x = x -1
Loop While x >= 0
i = i -1
KeyOutput = Mid(Chars, Cur + 1, 1) & KeyOutput
If (((29 - i) Mod 6) = 0) And (i <> -1) Then
i = i -1
KeyOutput = "-" & KeyOutput
End If
Loop While i >= 0
ConvertToKey = KeyOutput
End Function

rename it whatever you want, like "Product_Code".vbs run it and it should be able to pull the product code directly from your registry.

Is this for after or before you install the update?

I decided to upgrade and left the room for like half an hour, I come back and I have a completely black screen but I can see the mouse cursor...not sure if I shoot wait or repower the pc

It does actually it's the best way to do it but for some odd reason it ate shit on my laptop and couldn't be recovered from an install usb. GPT is supposed to be able to be recoverable but it's still new to me so I may have missed some obvious step to recover it.

Amazing I didn't think it would go so smoothly. Updated to Win10 and everything still works. Good job MS!

Nice! At first I thought it would give me the generic key which you can see using something like Belarc Advisor or "slmgr /DLV", but nope. Thanks!

I've just upgraded and am now on 10 via windows update.

If I want to do a clean install and wipe my harddrive do I need my Dell Product Key?

How do I find it? Is it the same as my 8.1 Product Key? I do have my 8.1 key from using the Belarc advisor program.

edit

I'll try this

Before, so you can enter your product key when it asks. Or does it even ask?

No problem, my physical code got lost during a move a while back and this was how I recovered it. Now I just have a piece of paper in a file with it written down.

Decided to go balls to the wall and reset. For some reason W10 has decided to add the first letter of my surname to the user folder, so instead of C:\Users\john it's C:\Users\johnx. That's going to rankle me.

Are the tiles in the start menu supposed to do anything? I just have static tiles:

I never used W8 so I'm not sure if this is how it should be. Would be nice if I could quickly see weather info without having to click on the tile.

Haha yeah it did the same with me. It named my folder to "music" which I did not want so I followed the top answer here: http://superuser.com/questions/495290/how-to-rename-user-folder-in-windows-8

You have to run them at least once and set them up. They'll then start animating shortly.

I want do install a fresh W7 on my new SSD and then upgrade it to W10.

Which windows updates are essential for the upgrading process? Because I sure as hell don't want to download all of them.

everything working fine. just had to reinstall adobe creative cloud and AVG.

question: can I change the background of the log in screen? I found the option to change the background of the lock screen but not for the log in screen.

Have you at least opened the apps? With Weather you have to set a city or town before it displays information on the tile.

Right clicking and resizing the app forces the tile to refresh also.

About time to update my bios and everything as well. I took pictures of all my overclocks and saved a profile, but I think that will get wiped. Hopefully the update doesn't cause my CPU OC to go unstable though.

if they work like win8, then yes - but you'll probably have to go into the apps to add your calendar account/location info for weather etc.

I wish the upgrade tool wouldn't redownload the entire install again. I have the 6.4GB downloaded on my desktop machine, it could just copy that to my USB drive. But no, download it again..

Yep, they do. To Activate the Live Tiles you have to open the App at-least once, and for some apps, they may have a special setup (in the case of weather, setup your location). In addition, some apps may only have a Live Tile on certain tile sizes, but most developers have their Live Tiles work across tile sizes so that's usually not a problem

I tried upgrading now my computer is bricked...any advice?

Edit: ok I figured out that it didn't recognize my nvidia drivers so the screen was black

So i installed a fresh 8.1 yesterday and, even with the "3 different methods" batch file, i can't get the taskbar icon to show up.

i wonder if they deactivated that 'workflow' entirely or they're just slowing down the "invites" because everyone and their mom is currently updating to Win 10.
Not in a hurry, but i'm kinda stuck with a bare-bones "Win 8.1, all updates, nvidia drivers, NOTHING ELSE KEEP IT CLEAN!" install and i just found out that i could be pre-ordering Legacy of the Void and play the prologue already...

Beyond the taskbar "upgrade reservation" what would be the post-release way to install windows 10? or is it the same thing pre- and post release?

My "Get Windows 10" icon dissapeared from the task bar after running Windows Updates, as I wanted to see if that was why I did not get the option to upgrade yet. Anyone else had this happen? And if so, how did you solve it?

You don't need to give windows 10 any CD keys.

Does Edge really lack the ability to save download files to a manually-specified location(heard this from The Verge's review)?

That could be a really big issue for me.

Graphics (Nvidia) driver gave me some trouble but seems to be working now...but for some reason everything feels kinda laggy right now. Just going to let it settle a bit and maybe give it a few more restarts. Hope it goes away soon.

I thought so.. but mine are remaining static. Except for certain ones like photos.
Weather/News are just basic tiles for me. Wonder if there's another way to fix it.

When you open the Weather, Go to your city and then click the star.

If it doesn't work, right click the tile and select "Turn Live Tile Off" then right click it and select "Turn Live Tile On". You could also try Unpinning then Pinning again

What the hell does this mean?

I have the BT folder and all. If I go into the folder and press the setup executable it says that it "can't find the required installation file [boot.vim]" or something. I guess my installation isn't done? But then why would it say that Win 10 failed to install?

EDIT1: Restarted my computer and it said that Win 10 install failed as soon as I went into Windows Update. Seems like it fails everytime I restart.

It was this error code that prompted it, 0x80070002, and here's what MS wants me to do: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/910336

EDIT2: Screw it, I'm downloading manually, the files seemed to be corrupt or something.
