Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

So it seems alright.

Mail app refuses to connect to Gmail for more than 1 nanosecond. It downloaded my messages but insists it needs to be "fixed" and connected. No matter how many times I authorize it.

Edge won't let you move the order of tabs with touch. Nfi why. It works with a mouse.

Upgrading from Windows 7. Been stuck on the "working on it" screen for about an hour. I'll give it one more hour and then I'm calling it, I can't have my OS be messed up the day the only Steam game I'm buying this month comes out.

despite a few small hiccups (like my wacom pen stuff being finicky for OS operations (right click and scrolling is weird and virtual keyboard is always wanting to come on, if you know how to disable it, please tell me)) I'm really liking windows 10 so far :3

its probably because i did a system reset after i first installed it so i haven't been running into driver errors :3

oh, i also tried ds4windows with borderlands 2 just now and everything seemed to be in order. worked fine for me :/

Sorry guys I'm at work and can't read the whole thread, how do I force install this? I'm getting nothing when making w8.1 look for updates.

It's rolling out in waves via Windows Update. That error is because you're not flagged to install it yet on MS's servers.

If you want it now you have to either force the update or download it from Microsoft yourself.

It's fine but you won't be able to revert back to your previous OS if you do.

Here - follow this. It shows you how to use the built in windows cleanup tool to clean out the previous windows install

Thanks, guys. Very helpful.

So I have a couple questions that hopefully someone could help with.

On my main PC I was running Windows 7 and upgraded to the Windows 10 preview. Does anyone know how to upgrade to the retail version and if so will I need my Windows 7 activation key? I don't know know where I put the box with the discs and the password.

Also on my laptop (Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro) it came preloaded with Windows 8 so no activation key for that one either. Will that be a problem?

NEED HELP. (from previous page)

I had the "$Windows~BT" folder (size 5GB) and ran "Media Creation Tool". After a couple of minutes with no text or updates, I choose to cancel it. It asked "are sure sure you want to quit?", I selected yes, than is said it was "Deleting files, this may take a minute".

Now, the "$Windows~BT" folder is only 1GB and "Media Creation Tool" keeps showing the "Something happened" error.

What should I do? Should I delete "SoftwareDistribution/Download" To get the 5gb back?

I have all updates.

I've got the Windows~BT folder and it's about 6GB. Any safe way to force it to do the update? I'm just waiting and waiting and there's no pop-up telling me it's ready.

I'm in the same situation. The number of files and their size haven't changed in two hours so it seems it finished downloading... but it doesn't ask me to start it.

This is so frustrating. Every time I turn off or reset my PC now I get a bsod (kmode_exception_not_handled)

This means that when I try and reset windows so it's a clean install it will never go through with it as it crashes restarting and cancels the reset. Knew I should have stayed with 7 for now.

Edit: Managed to get the reset working in safe mode. Fingers crossed I don't experience this issue after the clean reset.

I pre installed the files last night on my tablet, how do I go about forcing an install now? windows update says it's set to auto and nothing is to be done, can I use the command prompt line again to force it a second time?

Argh, I tried to force it to start installing with that method of deleting stuff from SoftwareDistribution/Download folder and using Command Prompt, but that didn't help. I also tried downloading that MediaCreationTool from Microsoft's site, and now instead of one $Windows-something folder (5.93GB), I have two: $Windows.~BT and $Windows.~WS, which are just 100KB (together).

What to do? Damn me and my impatience. I should have just waited for notification to pop up and update it the regular way >.>

i just used the official app someone posted here, it says its upgraded and activated but i have no idea how i can do a fresh install now without a key

I don't know why, but I'm really curious as to what Steam game you're talking about, lol. Absolute Drift?

Also, All these stories about Win10 not working are making me nervous to upgrade when I get home.

Same problem here.

Currently on 8.1 Pro. Can anyone confirm if this free Win10 upgrade is locked to your MB or Live account?

Wondering if I will have to repurchase Windows for my Skylake build in a few months.

Wait is clean install recommended? Is it easy to find all drivers and what not when finished or something? Or do you guys have all your installations on a external drive or something?

I think Microsoft is actually discouraging people from making a clean install. Once you are on Win 10, they rather want you to make use of the new "reset" function in settings.

Is there a gesture for forward/back in edge? I tried it briefly in PC world (they've upgraded most display models in store) and I couldn't figure out any way to do it. Liked the metro browsers swipe to go back in win8.1

I'm getting 80240020 as well.

The temp install folder has 15,999 files and is 4.56GB.

Oh well, I'll give it some time and hope the rest show up or I'll force it when my connection rolls over to off-peak. Gigabytes are a precious commodity in Aus. Can't use them all at once.

English International is UK etc. right ?

The English International keyboard layout makes it possible to write letters with accents by typing apostrophes, commas or tildes before letters. So if I press the apostrophe (') key and then the "e" key straight after I get "é". Or ~+a=ã, ,+c=ç, ...

Oh man, here we go! I choose to doba clean install, it only deletes the main partition files right? Sure hope so

You can chooose to do a clean install? That would be great for me. So much shit on my HDD I'd rather get rid of. And yeah, if it just wiped the system partition that would be great.

Ah, ok. Does that basically do a cleanup of your existing W10 install, getting rid of all old programs and junk? Will the end result be as "clean" as doing a clean install right away?

I am insider member, was running the latest build. Was I suppose to get anything today? Or what I had last week was it? Anyone from inside preview member comment on this?

It basically forces the OS back to a factory default state as though it was a fresh clean install, i used it in 8.1 and it was very easy to do with no issues.

I'd say doing an upgrade install and just using the inbuilt features is best, and then only if you really need to (once upgraded, you shouldn't need to do a reset). Doing an upgrade install is not the mess it used to be, its actually pretty dam smooth and feels just like a clean install - except all your own programs and stuff is ready and waiting for you unlike with a clean install.

It said that I can install the windows through setup.exe. I assume I can also do a clean install on that? Or do I have to do a bootable usb?

Yeah, but I don't actually want all the stuff I have installed on my W7 install. There's auto-update crap running in the background, programs I'll never use again, etc. Yeah, I could manually go through and get rid of all of that, but I'd rather just start over with a clean Windows install. So the post-upgrade reset option will make that happen for me?

yes

Is there anything worth testing out / looking at?

I feel like i need to be doing some new cool stuff, but just doing what I usually do :/

Still nothing on my tablet. Restarted the download three times so far but no dice. 80240020 error.

Hope the process goes smoother on my laptop and pc. They're at 70%.

Wow. Virtual Desktops keyboard commands (Window + Alt) is pretty annoying if you don't want to use the mouse for that (Window + Alt, Tab down to the desktop selection, then enter to tab to find the program there). I dunno if they can rework that to just use alt + 1/2/3/4 to switch between desktops and then have alt-tab switch between programs on that desktop but it'd be a lot better, IMO.

Leave the UI/mouse option the way it is. Let keyboard users get to where they want faster. If IF someone wants to keep that terrible keyboard program selection well... uh... let them enable it, I guess.

Is there a way to merge windows accounts? My xbox is under one and my pc another. Because I'm an idiot. Am I boned for the cross pc/xboc stuff?
