Do I have to upgrade before doing a clean install right?
Is it safe to delete the Windows folder from Windows.old? Installing Windows 10 took up 10GB over 8.1, and space on my boot drive is precious.
It's rolling out in waves via Windows Update. That error is because you're not flagged to install it yet on MS's servers.
If you want it now you have to either force the update or download it from Microsoft yourself.
It's fine but you won't be able to revert back to your previous OS if you do.
Thanks, guys. Very helpful. Here - follow this. It shows you how to use the built in windows cleanup tool to clean out the previous windows install

I've got the Windows~BT folder and it's about 6GB. Any safe way to force it to do the update? I'm just waiting and waiting and there's no pop-up telling me it's ready.

Upgrading from Windows 7. Been stuck on the "working on it" screen for about an hour. I'll give it one more hour and then I'm calling it, I can't have my OS be messed up the day the only Steam game I'm buying this month comes out.
I pre installed the files last night on my tablet, how do I go about forcing an install now? windows update says it's set to auto and nothing is to be done, can I use the command prompt line again to force it a second time?
Wait is clean install recommended? Is it easy to find all drivers and what not when finished or something? Or do you guys have all your installations on a external drive or something?
So it seems alright.
Mail app refuses to connect to Gmail for more than 1 nanosecond. It downloaded my messages but insists it needs to be "fixed" and connected. No matter how many times I authorize it.
Edge won't let you move the order of tabs with touch. Nfi why. It works with a mouse.
English International is UK etc. right ?
Oh man, here we go! I choose to doba clean install, it only deletes the main partition files right? Sure hope so
I think Microsoft is actually discouraging people from making a clean install. Once you are on Win 10, they rather want you to make use of the new "reset" function in settings.
Ah, ok. Does that basically do a cleanup of your existing W10 install, getting rid of all old programs and junk?
When doing a clean install, do you insert your Windows 8.1 Product Key online?
It said that I can install the windows through setup.exe. I assume I can also do a clean install on that? Or do I have to do a bootable usb?
I've read that you can't do a clean install until you've already done an upgrade and generated a Win10 keyWhen doing a clean install, do you insert your Windows 8.1 Product Key online?
It basically forces the OS back to a factory default state as though it was a fresh clean install, i used it in 8.1 and it was very easy to do with no issues.
I'd say doing an upgrade install and just using the inbuilt features is best, and then only if you really need to (once upgraded, you shouldn't need to do a reset). Doing an upgrade install is not the mess it used to be, its actually pretty dam smooth and feels just like a clean install - except all your own programs and stuff is ready and waiting for you unlike with a clean install.
Yeah, but I don't actually want all the stuff I have installed on my W7 install. There's auto-update crap running in the background, programs I'll never use again, etc. Yeah, I could manually go through and get rid of all of that, but I'd rather just start over with a clean Windows install. So the post-upgrade reset option will make that happen for me?
Anyway to fix the 80240020 update error?

Already did that last night. So, there's an option for reset when I run the setup.exe and not just upgrade?Upgrade first, then use reset within that.
