Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

Lol. Went to manually download Wind10 since my reserved download STILL isn't installing, and when I click "Install Win 10" it says "something happened".

Gave up on the windows upgrade bs, just used the media tool and I'm almost done installing. Ms should have just made the download the default way of upgrading.

What's the point of preloading 6 gigs of you can't install day 1?

So, I have an activated Windows 8.1 pro and did the force download thing, will it ask me for any keys or anything when I'm going through the update stage ?

WIndows 10 Upgrade icon refuses to show up for me, must be because my 8.1 came from Dreamspark. Tried all the fixes I could to make it appear, but it won't. Giving up for now before I start to get frustrated.

Just did a full clean install of Win 10 Pro using the the usb key created with the MS Tool. The machine is a Lenovo Thinkpad T410 that came with Win 7 Pro.

For some reason when I enter the product key from the Windows 7 Pro sticker, Windows 10 says it's not a valid key. What gives?
Windows 7 or 8 key has nothing to do with windows 10.

You need to update from a windows 7 or 8 install, Windows 10 will then activate and link itself to your motherboard/hardware ID.

The only people who need or get CD keys are people who are buying Windows 10. Everyone else who upgrades is getting the same CD key dependent on their version.

If your hard drive crashes once you have an activated copy of windows 10, you can do a clean install on a new drive and it will automatically activate without a CD key.

Are you guys doing clean installs through the windows 10 recovery option because when trying to use disc and format my partition and do a clean install it's not letting me format that partition I get an error anyone?

i can already tell i am going to use a lot more metro/modern apps. Allowing them to be in Windows helps a lot. I had the VLC metro and VLC Desktop app installed. Uninstalled the VLC Desktop app, prefer the modern one now.

How to force the update:

1. Go into "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" and delete everything in that folder, but not the folder itself.

2. Now, run a command prompt as an administrator. Type in "wuauclt.exe /updatenow" with no quotes.

3. Wait a minute, and watch the folder you just emptied. It should start to have files show up.

4. Go to your Control Panel > Windows Update and your Windows 10 should start downloading. Once that is completed, you will be prompted to begin the installation process*

*may not work in territories where W10 is not released

Hope that helps

Im in Canada, Toronto. THis did not work :(

I have been using Windows 10 for a couple of months and never bothered to look at the metro app. I will give it a shot.

I am in Toronto and have Windows 10 Pro installed via the upgrade method. It shouldn't be a location issue.

I get the same error that a lot of people get, but I can't delete the contents in the Software Distribution folder to use Fixit.

Although I get 80070308 instead of 80240020.

My Win 8.1 Pro upgraded smoothly. I didn't need to force or delete anything, just let the update do its thing. Liking Win 10 much better than 8 so far!

So after bearing with the Media Creation Tool for 2.5 hours, it now says that I cannot keep my system and personal files because my current Windows is on a different language.

What the hell. MS? You never let me choose what language to download in the first place.

Thats what im trying, its just telling me to inset recovery media. Which of course i don't have cos i did the update through windows update.

You need to create a recovery USB/DVD

Will it ask for a key if your doing a clean install from the iso or does it look at the existing partition first to see what version your eligible for?

It does ask for a key. Do a upgrade, note down the generic key it gives you when you're booted in and then just do the reset in Windows 10 if you want to do it clean. Easiest way.

Lastpass doesn't work with Edge. :(

Also, is there a way for Edge to clear browsing history and its cache upon closing? Internet Explorer 11 and Firefox have this.

Edge is still in its infancy. Great for fast browsing but little else at this point. I do love how it handles searches and Cortana integration, as well as its reading mode, but it won't replace Chrome for me until it has profile sync and extensions.

You can completely skip the CD key step, its not relevant for people who upgraded and have an associated windows 10 activation.

Hmmm, I got no "generic key" after upgrading.
Microsoft is giving everyone the same keys dependent on version of Windows 10, they don't show it to you. It is hidden in the system and can be found, but it is not needed.

Run Windows update normally, install everything it lists. Then attempt it again. It shouldn't have done anything like you described. It's possible it's not passing the 'ready' check.

Tried it again, and I get this:

Clicking "Check your PC" just reverts back to the prompt to check for updates and that there are no updates to install. "Show all available updates" just shows a blank page.

Stupid windows doesn't seem to want to cooperate. Is there any other way to install Win 10 than through the crappy service? I've heard of an ISO install/direct download but I don't know if I need a clean install for that.

Why is MS trying so hard to kill the classic Control Panel? Sigh.

Win10 upgrade much smoother than expected though. I was honestly surprised.

Nvidia needs to fix their drivers though. What a shitshow in 4K desktop resolution.

Yeah, that's what I thought. My upgrade went through without even mentioning the word "key" once.

Windows activation keeps failing though. It doesn't say why, just that it doesn't work.

Are they? Right click start, control panel. Two clicks away, full classic functionality. How is that trying to kill anything?
