Still no notification that its ready for me on the little window10 icon on my taskbar,I clicked notify me when ready...just opened my PC 2 hours ago though so maybe its normal...

darn, so i should just cancel all of this then? it's almost down downloading.

i never managed to get the Reserve tool, so what do i do?
Do you have an activated copy of windows 7 installed?
If so you can just run the Microsoft download as an upgrade.

i do, it's an OEM, but my product key is on the HP case.

i chose direct upgrade vs created media, and it's now creating the upgrade media after downloading it

That never happened for me (just kept saying "reserved"), and I tried all the tricks. Eventually the W10 icon just disappeared, lol (but I could still see it in Windows Update).

Reboot if that was just waking it from sleep.

That didn't work either.

So that's why I decided to use the media creation tool instead (to upgrade, not create boot media). Which seemed to work just fine, until I couldn't activate. We'll see...

So the first one of my 3 machines is upgraded. Went smoothly, looks good, feels faster.

Only complain for now is that Windows Update is forcing the Intel HD graphics driver on me, which is way, way outdated.

Gonna upgrade my gaming laptop next but leave the main PC alone for now I think.

It's actually pretty amazing at the lack of coverage for this launch (and how many outlets get simple information wrong when covering it) given how important of a release it is.

They're probably waiting for a next phase so people don't overload activation and app stores.

I have a new SSD I want to drop into my tower. I was planning to clean install 8.1 into it.

Would you guys recommend installing windows 8.1 on it and then upgrading. Or, can I upgrade to 10 on HDD and then do a clean of 10 with an ISO on the SSD. What's my serial key for windows 10 though?

Are you sure about this? In that case I might be screwed, yay! The license key (of which I can only see the last 5 characters) is the same after the reset as it was before though.

EDIT: The reset procedure (where it reinstalls Windows) didn't ask me for a key either, it just went through automatically just like the original upgrade. Shouldn't that mean I don't need a key...?

The one in the old-style control panel just brings you to the new one, where it fails.
Everyone who upgraded has the same key, depending on the version.

Every plain windows 10 pro install has the key ending in 3V6TT. Etc etc.

If the upgrade install never activated then Microsoft may not have recorded the fact that you upgraded from Windows 7/8 and then a reset or clean install will think it hasn't been upgraded.

If I take the free upgrade is it going to mess with any of my files or programs? Like is all my stuff going to move into different folders like it did when I went from 7 to 8?

You gotta install Windows 8.1 first, then upgrade to Windows 10. Once you do this, the Windows 10 license is synced to your Microsoft ID. Then you can burn an ISO and do a clean install of Windows 10. No serial key needed, just your Microsoft account.

my Windows 10 pro N install doesn't end in that or any of the other generic keys, is that a bad sign?

Finally it is redownloading the damn files again. Now I'll just wait.

So far I haven't seen a need to do a clean install. For piece of mind, I did re-install NVidia drivers but that's it.

The OS is very snappy. Gaming performance seems the same but alt tabbing in n out of games is much faster.

Hoping this is the case, we'll see. I was still at "reserved" status when I decided to go ahead with the upgrade, so maybe the license tied to my hardware just hasn't been activated yet? Or something?

Hmm, shouldn't they record this before the actual upgrade happens, while it's checking if your PC is compatible and all that? Seems stupid to wait until after the upgrade is done, when it might (seemingly?) be too late.

Okay, a few pages back, it seemed that everything was going smooth for people, so I grabbed the media creation tool and started the upgrade process.

I have a registered version of windows 7... I might still be able to halt this. Should I?

It's on "making sure you're reading to install"

Just got it done. I'm really surprised over how much space I got after downloading and upgrading. I freed up almost 25gb from my SSD.

Got it installed. Spent a while figuring out how to turn off the stuff I don't want, mostly failed.

Then realized that the upgrade broke all my file shares and now my media streaming throughout the house is totally broken. If you run into this, settings -> network -> advanced sharing settings -> turn down encryption from 128-bit to 40 bit.

This whole "something happened" thing has an extra special meaning for those who've read Stephen King's new book Revival... I'm just loving it.

Asking for my sister who's frantically texting me:

The install went fine on her computer. It restarted after install, and instead of a login screen, she gets a perpetual loading screen with the circling dots. She's tried a hard reset and she's tried waiting and neither has worked. Anyone got any ideas?

Can someone please answer this ?

I'm using some sound editing programs like FL Studio 11. A new version of FL Studio (12) came out recently and it mentions a compatibility with W10. I wonder if I keep using FL Studio 11 will it be compatible with Windows 10 as well (and what about the VST Plugins) ?

The updates in FL Studio are free but the UI and other stuff have changed a bit and I don't have time to learn about it right now so I'd like to know if I can keep using programs like this (not the latest version) smoothly on Windows 10.

(sorry if it's a silly question)

I reserved my Win 10 as soon as it came available. Is a notification just going to pop up randomly to install Win 10? I on Windows 7 if that helps.

In pretty much the same situation. Been reading this thread for the past day or so, haven't come across an answer.

Just restarted my machine, and now the little notification icon is gone. When I run Windows Update, it tells me Windows 10 is reserved, but the "Learn More" link does nothing. Can't seem to find any downloaded files, either.

Would anyone be interested in a thread like "Share your windows 10 start menu layout"?

I think the new start menu has potential but I'm not sure what to do with it yet...

Is it normal for the 10 icon to disappear on 7? I haven't had it after rebooting last night. Servers are probably hammered right?

The upgrade on my Surface 3 seemed to go off without a hitch. I had used Win 10 on VMs through insider preview and this is my first time using it on a tablet. I don't really have any complaints.

Tablet mode is more than sufficient so far.

Pro N generic key in the product.INI ends in PKCKT

The whole list of generic keys contained in Windows 10 update product.ini is here:

I installed Win10 fine on another PC but after installation it's downloading something at full line speed. I thought it would be Windows updates but I go to see if it's them but there's no Windows update running. What the shit is downloading?
