Windows 8 Release Preview

That thread actually isn't as bad as I thought it would be, but it once again demonstrates people's misconception/misinformation about Windows 8, including and especially the developer that made the comments.

After Minecraft landed on the Xbox and other app stores, I find it a bit hard to take Notch seriously when it comes to discussions like that. He doesn't want the game on Steam, because he doesn't want to give Valve a cut, but it's fine everywhere else? Or am I wrong with this?

Yeah as far as I understand the Windows Store is very friendly to developers, much more so that the Xbox currently is (you don't get charged for patches/updates).

He doesn't want the game to be on Steam because the PC is an open platform and he has the choice of self-publishing.

The Xbox is locked down, and he does not have the choice to self-publish. On Android, most people don't know how to install from unknown sources, so the only practical option is to release on the Play store.

That brings up something I've been curious about/people around the industry have brought up. Do you guys think MS is going to move away from the 3 year updates for Windows?

On one hand you have iOS and Android with their yearly release cycle, on the other hand... you have Android, where, as of august 2012, 60% of users still sit on Gingerbread.

Given how much (game) developers talk about pirates to legal users ratio on Android, I would say that most people do know how to install from unknown sources ;)

I'd think they have to, at least to the WinRT platform. The mobile market is (roughly) on a one year cycle and WinRT is still pretty far from mature. 3 years with the limitations currently in place would be terrible.

I'm sure they'll move to yearly updates, but they won't be called Windows 9,10,...
I'm not really expecting huge UI changes, but I think they'll offer new APIs for developers and other smaller refinements. I'd look at things Windows Phone have that Windows 8 does not.

I hope we see a lot more updates to the built-in apps (maybe every three months). They should try to at least match their Windows Phone counter parts as soon as possible

I was reading this today.

Jesus, by December most iOS users will be on the latest version, while most Android users will be on a version that is 2 years old.

That is with factors inherent to mobile like device turnover. It boggles the fucking mind.

It's a good thing for developers that Android users don't really surf the web or buy apps. That means everyone can just focus on iOS. :P

can you make win8 boot directly into desktop mode
essentially turning in into an improved win7?

the desktop improvements regardless of all the metro crap are still nice in 8 so

If there isn't something that does that now there's probably going to be something soon since so many people like you complain and can't just press the windows button after booting up.

I've been using Windows 8 since the consumer preview was released; I really like it and want to buy a copy in October, however, I have a concern with compatibility. There are several programs and games which completely refuse to run in Windows 8. Is there a chance the compatibility issues will be fixed upon the proper release? I've visited the Windows 8 forum and posted there... Do the developers actually look there?

Thanks.

I think someone posted about a program that did just that somewhere in this thread.

But I don't think it's a big deal either way. When you start the system you usually want to start some programs anyway. The start screen's pretty good for that.

And sleep mode (or hybernate?) should wake the pc up in the same state it was left in. So on the desktop.

There is a tile of Fable 3 on there in the games area. Is that an indication that Fable 3 is available on the marketplace, or just that the profile has played Fable 3? I don't think I have ventured into the games app in the preview. If it is available, I how on earth does that support touch screens, which I thought was a requirement of apps on the marketplace. Or is that just a link to download the game from a website?

EDIT: Nevermind, it is most likely just a reference to the 360 version with the ability to click, "Play on 360"

EDIT 2: People tab doesn't look like a complete shit fest now.

Notch sort explained his concern of Windows 8 on his twitter after he feels people are trying to bait him into bashing Windows 8. He is a not a fan of the store but he think the rest is ok.

Smartglass looks like a rebrand of Xbox Companion. Hope it got some new functionality (like working as a keyboard for the xbox)

edit oh SHIT METRO SOLITARE AND MINESWEEPER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good to see they made a bing app. While it would be nice to have bing as deeply integrated as it is in Windows Phone (including local scout, vision, music, voice), they just couldn't do that without being fined billions :)

The bing app will probably also use the search charm. Can't remember: does the search charm in the RP already do web search? If not it will now.

oh god just installed this in vmware player....
LOL HOW DO I CLOSE THE SETTINGS.
oh i have to click and drag it down to the lower left hand corner.

taskbar looks weird without the start button.

otherwise it's running fine. wish i had a touchscreen device.

I'm sure the app will have significant updates before the consumer release date of Windows 8, along with the final release of the updated dashboard this fall for the Xbox.

You could search charm with the Metro IE. Doing it with Bing will be nice.

Metro apps are not meant to be closed, they automatically become "suspended in memory". But if you really want to close one you can drag down from the top, Alt + F4, or pull up the app switcher bar on the left and right click, close.

I kinda expect all the local scout, vision, music stuff to be in the bing app.... if not now I think it will come in an update.

They showed it at e3... going to do all kinds of stuff with the xbox.

So Google Chrome must have updated on my machine yesterday and now it also has it's own Metro Start Button icon and also will load up in Metro if clicked from there and not the desktop. Funky!

Chrome has been a hybrid browser for a while now. At least on the dev channel.

I wish Microsoft would just give us the download .iso. That way it wouldn't be illegal :C
-edit: since the windows 8 N RTM was leaked.

What programs and games?
The programs are mostly inconsequential. The ones I recall not working came with my GPU, motherboard and keyboard. I'm more concerned about the games. LA Noire, Jagged Alliance 2 and Spiral Knights crash upon start up. In the case of LA Noire, a workaround was found after a lot of effort from SPUF, the others are still "dead" though. Shogun 2 has random crashes on Windows 8, a developer from Creative Assembly is trying to find the root of the problem there, so that should get sorted out at least.

I obviously don't own every game there is so I'm not sure whether there are others with issues, the above affect me personally. I'm wondering whether the changes that need to be made for compatibility need to come from Microsoft or the game developers? I'd imagine it could come from either end. I can understand developers waiting until the official release to provide support for Windows 8 - that is likely the case with regard to LA Noire and Spiral Knights. However, where does that leave Jagged Alliance 2? Does it fall back to the modding community, or will Microsoft do what they need to do to get it running? Is posting on the forums the best way to bring it to their attention? I know it's getting on a little bit in terms of age now, but it's still - and probably always will be - my favourite game. It's important to me that it runs in Windows 8.

I also have a bizarre graphics issue with Red Faction: Guerrilla, although I'm not entirely sure whether it is caused by Windows 8. Buildings, objects and people literally disappear and reappear as I move around... As I said, bizarre. It's still playable, however it becomes a little frustrating when I'm getting shot by invisible enemies.

You gotta love the Gaming side logic "W8 is an abomination, no one will use it because is so diferent...

People are going to run to Linux"

Windows 7 reviews were up a week after the availability on MSDN. If it's the same with Windows 8, they should be up by the end of the month.

Thanks, looking forward to it. Hope they added back the option to change fonts and tweak other system metrics. It's one of those minor things they took away in the previews that really, really annoys me.

Windows 8 Secrets: RTM Setup Animations Revealed

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEUunlvWR58&feature=player_embedded
Because Windows 8 is such a major change from previous Windows versions, Microsoft struggled to determine how much in-box training they needed to provide. The spectrum was fairly broad, of course, ranging from no training at all to “heavy” tutorials that would step the user through every possible new feature.

What Microsoft found, however, was that the sweet spot involved not overwhelming the user, but rather just providing them with the basics for finding some of the core new Metro UIs, like the Charms. And the way that Microsoft decided to implement these pointers is via a set of two animations that appear at the end of the so-called Out of Box Experience (OOBE), which is the part of Setup where the user enters basic user account information and picks a color scheme.

The animation(s) you see will be based on the capabilities of your PC. If you have a touch-based device, like a tablet, you will be shown the animation oriented towards touch followed by the version for mouse usage. Otherwise, you will only see the version aimed at mouse users.

Are reviewers doing to review the RTM in a few weeks or are they going to wait until the October launch?

I don't even know if I want to see the reviews. I bet most are somewhat negative ("sucks with mouse", "sucks with touch because desktop", "hardly any apps unlike iPad", "jarring transition between metro and desktop", "not intuitive, everything hidden","the next vista",...). Will probably get worse reviews than Mountain Lion.
