So there are now paid apps in the store, and also this for non-MS and non-metro apps:

Just bought a new SSD and decided to run the Win 8 preview for the next few months until release instead of installing 7.

It's not so bad. Old habits have to be changed in regards to the start menu. I had some trouble finding things at first but I think I'm getting the hang of it.

What's the logic behind not having a shut down button anywhere though? I find that rather odd. Having to hit Alt+F4 every time I want it to go to sleep, restart or shutdown isn't a very good design.

In the Metro Start Menu pull up the charms bar. Then hit settings and look for the power button. Boom done.

The other day I had to use my brothers PC to print something and for the life of me I could not figure out how to turn the damn thing off after I was done. This is going to be monster headache for many

I just cant get pass how a billion dollar company can overlook such glaring potential backlash and also costumer service nightmare as I bet they will be inundated with calls and emails from people bitching and clueless.

There is a shut down button on the right hand side bar inside settings. I guess they could put shutdown in that bar under settings though as it will still look ok.

Ahh there it is! Hiding like a secret passageway in an old mansion.

It's going to be hilarious watching my grandma try to figure that out whenever she gets her next comp.

going to start to find the shut down button wasn't exactly intuitive either. I think its just people were used to the old way. Microsoft just needs to tell users about the corner UIs and i think people should be ok.

I think that MS didn't really worry about slapping you the in the face with the shut down button because they want and assume that users will just allow their computers to sleep via closing lids on their laptops or sleeping after a certain period of time instead of doing full shut downs on their computers all the time.

Do most people shutdown their computer still? I haven't shut down my laptop, I just simply push the power button or close the lid and let it go to sleep. Computer at my work never get shut down, you just log out and it just goes to sleep.

Also they are putting tutorial so people know about charm bar (what a stupid name). I understand the concept behind setting being on charm bar and the side because they want consistent experience from app to app but it will take some getting used to.

I gave windows 8 a run last night, after 45 min. decided to reformat my SSD and re install windows 7 again......DID NOT LIKE IT AT ALL !

Care to elaborate?

Well first off, considering its being beta tested on a desktop and is clearly not designed to work well with one is absolutely obvious.

The UI is absolutely horrible with all of this useless unused empty spaces in every app you open. Its not even particularly nice either, its just really really simplistic and ugly. It looks like it was made in a high school project or this new companies first attempt at an OS. But it definitely doesnt feel like an MS product.

Everything seems to take extra steps and is not intuitive at all. Example, before i actually used it, i was planning on installing it and using the old desktop part as my main screen but if you do, then that its actually worst than windows 7. Everything seems to takes extra steps to get anything done. Wanna close the computer? In 7 it was simple, start menu/shutdown. There you go, 2 steps. But now? Hover the bottom left corner, press start when it appears, go to the top right corner now, wait for the settings to appear, go to the bottom, select close. Oh wow, how intuitive! Im in the desktop but i have to go at a completely different screen (and take unnecessary extra steps) than where i am to simply close the computer. Even the settings menu seems to have less options than the regular control panel, but then if you wanna use the control panel instead, they make it hard to find without a simple start menu option like it was before.

I absolutely despise the lack of a start menu in the desktop part of the OS. It makes everything more difficult to find and ultimately makes the old desktop section of it practically useless.

The UI is overly simple and ugly, the old desktop is now a pain in the ass to use without any real start menu and looks and feels like it was made by amateurs. Ultimately this OS is a huge step backwards and its clearly not designed with regular desktops in mind.

I get what they are trying to do, have one interface for all devices like that users can switch easily from device to device without hassle of relearning the OS but in the case of the desktop computer, it doesn't work. Windows 7 destroys this garbage. Its not even close. Its definitely worth 40$, not a penny more.

All Windows 8 hardware sold should have a physical power button on it.

45 minutes is not nearly enough time to get used to it. Give it two weeks.

You didn't have to open the Start menu to bring up the charms bar on the right. Just go to the bottom right corner, hit Settings then hit power. Or hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and hit the power button.

Don't even bother with the Metro Apps. The desktop is a desktop just like Win7, now you just have a fullscreen Start Menu.

Also you can get to the Control Panel by moving to the bottom left corner and right clicking.

A full screen start menu? Sounds like a smart idea to me. Incidently im investing all my money in Zepplin stocks! Those things are gonna be big!

Windows 8 is a half assed os. Half assed tablet ui stuck on top of a desktop ui. In lamens terms, its lamentabley stupid. Microsoft couldnt do better then 'durr people buy our desktop os, lets use that to gain tablet market share and hope it flows on to our stagnant mobile os!'

Its sad because microsoft is always playing catch up, but in the zeal to get ahead of apple, they fell over their own ass backwards into the dreaded 'usability' pit and decided to go all in. But it was dark, so usability is 'learnt' because its not more usable, its just different for no reason.

There is a difference between desktop and tablet, between 10 inch and 2 24 inch screens. There is a difference between mouse and keyboard and finger, oh my.

Oh well. I guess me needed company.

The interface seems built with Tablets and pones in mind more than laptops and desktops............But I loved how fast it boots!

how is leveraging your greatest asset stupid? If Apple had 90% marketshare in the Laptop/Desktop space I guarantee you they would do the same thing.

Anyway the New UI works fine, but i still stick to the Desktop mostly because of all the applications and it being better on Multiple Monitors.

Honestly, i rather stick with 7. But thanks, i didn't know that. The whole metro look and usability is just awful enough for me to just completely skip on it.

Wow..so much drama because the start menu is now bigger and more animated.

Because you cant leverage a zoo into an abbotoir without killing what made the zoo special.

Haha, its not drama, I dont mind, I just find it all funny.

yeah that start menu was really something special, so special i never used it. Honestly if you used it for anything other than Search since 7 then i feel sorry for you.

I just don't understand this thinking. Windows 8 is still a complete desktop OS. Metro is fundamentally an expanded start menu that does the same thing the old start menu did (launch programs), while being greatly expanded and capable of so much more. You're only GAINING things with Windows 8.

Change, it had to happen sometime.

That's the biggest reason why I put the Release Preview on my new laptop, its boot up time is downright fantastic.

As for the Start Orb, you've got to remember, its been around since 1995, that was 17 years ago. There's an entire generation of people who haven't lived in a world without it.

As for me, I've stated my opinion on the subject. I get what MS is trying to accomplish with 8. With that said, I've been using Classic Shell because I'm having a hard time adjusting and I'll continue to use it until MS stops it.

I have no need for any of the Metro stuff, its not something that I use.

I used my start bar once today >_< im sorry, I shouldnt have done it, I should have used the whole screen on my 2 24 inch screens to find what I was looking for, its much more intuitive. I need a more 'tabletty' feel for my desktop, because tablet is hip, cool, now, the future, desktop? Thats old news baby.

Again, there is 0 reason for the start bar to be a screen start menu in the desktop os. No reason for the desktop to be a little button you have to click. No reason for any of it. Other then? Half an ass with a side of fries please. Oh and forcing microsoft shit down your throat, xbox video, xbox music, xbox games!

Change for the sake of what? Has it made the desktop experience better? No. And as a desktop user, I think thats pretty stupid.

yeah that 2 seconds i see the new ui when I type something in and hit enter really ruins my day.

For me it has. Once I got used to the way things ARE different I really appreciated how intuitive the Metro is, not to mention how speedy the OS is as a whole. My only complaint is that the Metro apps need to launch faster. Other than that, I love the new start menu and see major potential for it when other developers get on board with more interactive tiles.

Then again...I never was the type that needed to launch 50 different programs every 5 minutes, apparently.

I am not against the way the interface looks, in fact it is orgasmic (IMHO) but the keyboard and mouse combo seems not enough to control it !

It's a cheaper Windows 7 with gimmicky Metro stuff.

I have learned that there are some neat commands you can do - windows key + Q opens an interface to search for programs, windows key + W opens up the same thing for settings. You can open up Explorer with windows key + E.

It's definitely not worth the hubbub though. Ubuntu is better, Windows 7 is better.

Uh what? Fitting the same amount of information on 100% of your screen real estate as you could in 5% works better than what?

Most people are not mouse masters. Digging through folders in a tiny corner of the screen is slower than a fullscreen menu with large icons.

ETA: I see users do this a lot. If it isn't stuck to the initial Start Menu screen or the taskbar people will minimize everything and find it on the desktop. The "All Programs" menu doesn't even exist to them.

Mouse masters? What the hell. Do you find yourself stumbling when trying to click a hyperlink? Though there's no reason one wouldn't be able to make the icons bigger.

Exactly the case with me. I have a ton programs on my computer that made my start menu a fucking mess to navigate (especially if I forgot my mouse and was forced to use the trackpad) and covered most of my screen anyway.

Metro allows me to organise my programs, not to mention GREATLY expands the type-to-search function.

Yes, I misclick sometimes and open things I don't intend. You haven't?

Edited this into my post on the last page:

You can adjust how many recently opened programs it remembers, and you can pin as many to the start menu as you want. Start menu will never cover most of your screen since it only expands in height.

Only in potential, as in, when you're using it to search with Metro apps. But that's still no 'great' expansion. Same with all the other pro's people are posting - they have absolutely 0 things to do with it taking up 100% of an entire monitor. You can do everything the same whilst taking up a less amount of space. In fact everything is already the same AND BETTER in Windows 7 (again, you can search for everything at the same time, no need to select what you're searching for).

If I ever get to that stage I'll just make it slightly bigger, but not fullscreen.
