Trying to install Windows 8 on my friend's laptop is just serving to reinforce my strong beliefs that SW/HW should never come from different vendors. At least I personally would never use such a device.

That's true, that Cintiq touch would be pretty swell for it actually.

Even the small Bamboos can be used as multi touch trackpad.

I would hate to only have one hardware vendor. that is the main reason I don't use OSX and will probably be switching away from iOS (well, price comes in play as well). Anyway what problems are you having?

Can't find a driver for VEN_8086&DEV_1E3A&SUBSYS_06451025
Lost my desktop tile, and search won't find anything named Desktop...

Probably going back to 7, which is a shame as I really liked the design and smoothness of 8. Don't even mind the metro screen. They could have just kept the start menu in addition to the metro screen and it'd be all fine for me. I added the start menu back with the classic shell program, but it does feel like an add on and not as integrated as Microsoft's own start menu.

weird. since 7 I have never had problems with windows not finding drivers for my PC. And I don't know what to do about the Desktop thing, haven't encountered that bug. Restart maybe? /shrug

Next time, don't download the N version.

It's an Acer Aspire laptop. Restart doesn't bring the desktop tile back unfortunately.
Seriously all MS had to do was not throw away the start menu and I'd be very happy with Windows 8. I'll give the driver thing a pass as it hasn't been released in retail yet.

I downloaded the normal version, from Microsoft's partner portal, after being unable to install the N version. So this is the normal Windows 8 that I'm having problems with.
Ouch. I've never had an issue with drivers after windows 7 on any of the multiple laptops I've tried, though maybe the final release will have more than the RTM does.

If you press win+D does the desktop show up?

How could you lose the desktop tile. It's not like you could uninstall desktop - it should still be there among other "apps".
Happened after I installed the classic shell program. It was there at first. Still my biggest issue is no drivers for something that I don't even know what. That's why I don't like having an OS independent from the hardware manufacturer.

I know it's Intel and has something to do with the chipset, although I installed the win7 chipset drivers, it still hasn't gone away. Of course the laptop manufacturer has no win8 drivers on their site.
Edit: I got some drivers for Intel "desktop" boards from Intel site and it worked! No unknown devices left in device manager.

One last question, how can I make the IE and Chrome tiles launch their desktop versions instead of the crappy metro versions?

Well internet explorer isn't metro for me and i'm not sure about chrome besides pinning it to the taskbar.

whatever browser is set to default will open up in metro when pinned to the start screen. Cant have both. The IE one is miles ahead of the chrome one imo. When pinned to the taskbar etc.. they open the desktop version.

I don't know about Chrome but for IE just start the desktop version, click the tools icon, click 'Internet options', click on the 'Programs' tab and in the 'Choose how you open links' drop down menu, select to always open on the desktop.

You're right about IE, it opens a new window in the desktop. Chrome, on the other hand opens its own window in Metro. How can I make it work like IE?

Anyone use Storage Devices yet? Does it work well?

Once I start putting games on this with my 256 GB SSD, I may want to slap another SSD in there to expand.

Unpin it from Start and pin it to taskbar. That's what I do. There's no point to metro chrome, especially considering it's an entirely different chrome..you'd have to log into your google account and sync to get bookmarks.

Figured it out, thanks!. I really like Win 8 and the loss of the start menu is alleviated by right clicking where it used to be. I think I can get used to this.

Ugh I'm going nuts. I tracked down Chrome.exe (it's not in Program Files WTF?) in appdata directory and pinned it to the start menu. However it disappears after some time? I am very disappointed in Chrome and the fact that it doesn't install to where all other windows programs install. At this rate, I'm hating Google, while MS is becoming more appealing to me. I also found out that this "metro" feature in Chrome can not be turned OFF.

I want NOTHING to do with ANY metro apps what so ever. Full screen apps on a laptop are pointless. Why is it so hard to make it behave the way I want? All I want from the metro start screen is a nicer start menu that can be navigated by keyboard and has nice tiles. I want ALL apps launched from there to launch on the desktop, no metro!

chrome should be under all programs (right click the start screen). Pin that to the taskbar.

Yes just pin it to the taskbar. I only use the metro incognito version for Pr0n. Other than that you don't even need to touch the metro chrome.

and about the metro chrome off/on. That is all google's fault. IE has a option to change that. Chrome when set as the default browser will always open in metro when clicked from the start screen.

Unfortunately that results in a shortcut to the metro version...I want a direct link from the start menu to Desktop Chrome, while making Chrome the default browser. I don't think that's possible at the moment with the current Chrome version. I'll have to make IE the default browser I think. That's still not optimal because I want to be able to launch desktop versions of both IE and Chrome with a single click from the metro start screen.

hmm must have changed since i las used it then. It used to open the desktop browser when launched from the desktop and metro when launched from the start screen (when set as default).

Anyway, that is all on google.

Well, I haven't done it, but it should be possible.

Find the chrome.exe that launches the desktop version. I think Google puts it in user files instead of program files.

Then create a shortcut. Copy the shortcut to something like %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows so it stays put. Right click on the shortcut and "pin to start".

It still works that way, but I want it to always open the desktop version, even when clicked from the metro start screen. Currently that is not possible with Chrome as default browser.

You are right on Google dropping the ball on this though. Not Win 8's fault.

oh. Well it seems like it is still in beta so maybe they will add those options like IE has.

Search the chrome.exe (it should be in C:\Users\You\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome) and pin that to start, it works even if Chrome is your default browser.

EDIT: I see that is what you did, is weird because it works for me without issue

You can pin any exe or file to start. I think the problem is how Google installs chrome to a ridiculous location, so the desktop chrome isn't showing up in all apps. You just need to find the EXE, create a shortcut, and pin to start.

Did all that, and the shortcut worked for 2 minutes. Then it magically disappears. It's still in my start menu folder, but invisible in the metro screen!

lol. Maybe the location to copy I provided is invalid, it's a bug, or google update somehow ninjaed it. I wonder if the shortcut is invalid if the google.exe is replaced by one of the hundreds of google updates that runs over the week.

It's really ridiculous. I have a working Google Chrome shortcut in C:\Users\User\Appdata\Roaming\Microsoft\Start Menu\Programs folder, right next to the IE shortcut. IE shortcut appears in metro, Chrome shortcut doesn't.

This has really soured me on Chrome and Google in general. In the future I will try to avoid their products, except probably for search.

Its a beta product, I wouldn't judge it until its a real release. Or did the metro support end up in a stable release?

its in the stable release, but i still think they are working on it. (at least i hope they are, their metro browser is awful).

Made IE default browser, set to never show me a Metro version, I'm happy.
Chrome sucks for not providing that option like IE, so no default browser for you.

Chrome is always in Alpha/Beta stage... desktop version performes worse in Win8 vs Win7 - for instance, flash videos are jerky sometimes which never happened in Win7 on same computer.

We can't have our own custom picture in the Metro background? Really Microsoft???
I know you can probably hack it but seriously some really questionable design decision here.

I've got Chrome set as my default and where it's launched from determines what version of the app runs. If I launch it from metro I get the metro app, if I launch it from the desktop I get the desktop app.
