None, considering that the vast majority of developers will end up using live tiles for some purpose. Customization would completely invalidate that ability.

Well, you can currently change the background on the Metro Apps, what I'm trying to find is a way to get custom images on my non-metro apps.

The most plausible way seems to be creating a Metro App on VS2012 that simply launches the .exe, and giving it whatever image you want for tile.

There's also MetroTiles, which adds a custom image to Start made of a couple Tiles, shouldn't be too hard to get an app that creates tiles with a on click action of launching an exe. I'll have to look into it.

There is an app in the marketplace now that lets you use images to launch exe. Can't remember the name of it though.

Let us know if you remember what app it is, that's exactly what I'm looking for :)

there are a couple of Stores for x86/64 applications in the store now.

Valve needs to make a steam application.

btw, searching "/" in the store is a good way to see all of the applications at once. I assume "*" would probably work too.

1275 applications in the US store at the moment.

MetroTiles

looks like you can just make images into tiles, not add a shortcut to them though.

I guess the first metro complete media player is out:

PowerDVD is a bit pricey (15 dollars), but it plays mkvs.

It is also the first metro app for non arm architectures i've seen (only X86/x64)... I actually didn't expected to see many of those... Hope it's not a trend...

Of any app? How?

there have been a lot of desktop applications in the store for a month or two now.

So it really allows you to launch an exe through the tiles created? I guess I'm getting it then, thanks.

Edit: Double post, fuck.
no it does not. just allows you to make images into tiles.

Desktops apps yeah, but purely metro was a first for me... Though, it seems you just posted a few others too :P

Hopefully it's not a trend... WinRT was supposed to enable apps withing different architectures with pretty much the same code. (I guess codecs with hardware acceleration can be a little more trick)

Those store apps could be a great tool when setting up Pcs for parents... Just tell them to only install things from the app store or from those metro stores and they won't have to disturb you when looking for a specific app, nor will they get viruses...

Upgraded my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 to Win8 Pro x64 and loving it. Its been a few days and I'm completely acclimated to the Metro interface and store etc...

Loving it so far.

Damn that was fast. It took me a few weeks to get rid of my old habits.

I don't think I've mentioned this before, but I was having issues with playing any music or video with the Metro Xbox media applications.

I kept getting the error 0xc00d11cd ([something]ffff). I could download music (w/ Zune Pass) but could not play the file, nor any DRM free mp3s. The video application could not play any mp4 files either. WMP on the desktop couldn't play any files either.

The issue (finally!) was the Audio Driver I was using (realtek something or other). I just reverted it back to the built in one by Microsoft, and everything works fine now. I guess I will have to wait until an updated Win8 driver for my Chipset is released.

But I thought I would post this just in case someone has the issue and they come across this.

I don't know whether it's a new feature or if it was already available in Win7, but I've just noticed that by shaking a window (dragging the titlebar left and right) you can minimize other windows. :D

Uhm ... welcome to E3 2012?

To date, our success with Xbox has been led by a box in the living room. Moving forward, Xbox will go beyond the box to reach all new families of devices. Just as Xbox has grown to mean more than just games, it also is more than just a console. This year, Xbox becomes the premium entertainment service for Microsoft. Whether on your PC, tablet, TV or phone, Xbox will be a gateway to the best in music and video, your favorite games and instant access to your friends. With the launch of Windows 8, we’ll bring Xbox entertainment to everyone. With Xbox on Windows 8 devices, we rapidly accelerate the reach of Xbox entertainment from more than 60 million people to hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

I really don't understand them using the Xbox branding all over Windows 8. When my mum opened music from the start screen for the first time she said "Xbox music? I don't have an Xbox... where's my music?" She was confused, she thought this was a feature for Xbox owners and dismissed it immediately.

It's just Microsoft being Microsoft.

It's the same as them renaming their mail service "Outlook" even though the name has been associated with their mail client for years now. It sure won't be confusing.
And what about Zune? Is it a media player, media service or a (failed) mp3 player? Seriously, for a long time I didn't even know that Microsoft has their own media service because every time I heard "Zune" I thought about the mp3 player.

infinity would be such a corny name. loop would also fit the theme, could have a cool font and be easily recognizable.
the video game industry is full of corny names so it should fit right it. I mean come on, xbox? playstation? and I don't get me started on wtf wii is. that is more horrible than corny though.

I'm unable to set Chrome as the default browser, it seems IE still has some defaults assigned. Any idea what to do?

Also, Infinity is a cool name.

Xbox

DirectX (box)

(x) box - where x is the variable. X = entertainment, X = games, X = music, just no work :P

that's why Xbox works.

playstation is a play on workstation

wii is just stupid

if it's so dumb, why is it gaining significant traction?

just like how ipod and iphone iwhatever is dumb... basically the same concept.

About the 40 bucks Win 7 whatever to Win 8 Pro offer that some people have talked about in this thread, do you know if it's exclusive to the US or something? Is it hidden somewhere in MS website or not up yet? The only upgrade offer I can see in the Spanish website is just for PCs bought since the beginning of this summer, and not for everybody.

It's in "131 markets" They'll probably put more info on their websites on launch day.

So once Windows 8 comes out, I'll be building a new PC to replace my old one still running Vista. Will I be able to download Windows 8 on my old PC taking advantage of the promotion then install it on my new PC or will I have to buy a retail disc?
