Windows 8 Release Preview

Disabling the windows driver foundation service has gotten rid of all CPU spikes and slowdowns. Feels a lot smoother than Win7 now that it's actually running normally.

I gotta say, having netflix on the sidebar or whatever you call it is all sorts of amazing. Really want to get a second monitor now. Can you do the sidebar snap thing on multiple monitors or does it just use the second?

Also, would be awesome if they could add ipod/pad/phone support like the ps3 does or atleast let me use a controller.

Even in two monitors you can't have more than one snapped app

Fair enough. Another question. Is there smooth scrolling for apps? I think the one thing that annoys me is how jittery it is going left and right when searching through the store/netflix/ect.

Japan knows how to sell Windows 8

Man, was reading an article about Xbox Music and they mentioned Windows 8 would have a $1.5 billion dollar marketing campaign. Knew it was going to be big but not like that.

Cool. I use Spotify but i'll still try it.

I will try it as soon as I can, but the MS logic on this is so awkward: Free on a device in which you don't pay a subscription, Paid on a device in which you have to pay also for another subscription (Xbox Live gold).

Lets hope MS has a fucking unified subscription for every service together on its sleeve

Well i think their logic is that if you're dumb enough to pay for Xbox Live you are dumb enough to pay for their music service :P

I have a feeling when the next xbox comes around and it has the windows app store or whatever on it then you wont need a xbox live sub to access netflix etc... at least it better not. If it does i wont buy it.

yep, crazy. I think i read that microsoft wanted to get 5 ad impressions for everyone in the US. That is a lot of ads. Apparently that commercial above started airing today btw during one of the football games. I'm surprised i didnt see it during game 1 if the NLCS on Fox though.

I know, but it still bothers me, I already pay for Gold and I think Xbox Music is worth the subscription, I see the value in both services. but why leave out the silver users that could happily pay for XM? It was stupid enough with Netflix, Youtube and other services but they are third party options so MS didn't have the incentive to push them as they do with Xbox Music

Yes, I posted it.

There was a couple new cross-promotion spots during The Walking Dead tonight. One commercial break had like four Windows 8 ads.

I like it. Actually, all of the W8 commercials have grown on me. It used to bother me that the screens were so blatantly simulated, but after getting over that they are actually really well done.

Wait, is MS only going to be selling an upgrade version of Windows 8 through their store if I want to buy a digital copy?

Seems like all retail stores are only selling upgrade copies, with newegg the only one selling OEM copies. No full retail version mentioned anywhere.

Xbox Music releasing tomorrow on Xbox 360 in 22 countrys and the 26th for PCs/Tablets with Windows 8; free, ad suported option for PCs/Tablets on 15 countrys

Looks like Germany is one of the 15. Heise.de reports that the free streaming as well as the 10 Euro/month music pass will be available.

Edit: Looks like the wait for iOS and Android versions, as well as for the web client won't be too long.
Coming soon: Android, iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch (and web). Yes, Microsoft will release Xbox Music apps for Android and iOS in 2013 so that you can access Xbox Music services from competing devices too. Microsoft will also release a web client for Xbox Music, similar to what's available now for Zune (where Zune Pass subscribers can stream music from the Zune web site.) This too will happen early next year.

Is there no separate volume meter for Xbox Music? Also even if it's set to 0 it still plays music, although that seems to be OS wide. Can't find an option to mute other than on the desktop

It would be cool if you could chose to have websites display the mobile site, when sidedocked.

So would something like this be of interest to you then?

Doesn't seem like it.

I don't have that mute problem though. If I'm in an app I just bring up the charms bar, hit settings and drag the volume right down to the bottom until it says mute.

So I have the old Zune Pass that includes 10 DRM-free MP3 downloads per month, and I have an Xbox. How does the "conversion" work from Zune Pass ->Xbox Music? Will I lose my 10 free songs per month?

yes, exactly that! I see myself watching E3 conferences or something in the bigger window and casually reading gaf reactions on the sidedocked webpage.

Yeah I like them as well.

This would be great for stuff like this.

Couldn't you do that though, just force mobile for the site?

See, this I don't get, unless you're talking about Windows RT.

Why not just use sized windows to do exactly that, now, without the Metro crap?

How are you getting it? You have the release preview?

I have the pro version through school.

Doesn't seem like it.

That sounds pretty much useless if that's the case... I'll have to check out the mute thing. I'm guessing its something to do with the speakers themselves and not windows 8 although I don't remember having the issue with 7.

I like the fixed sizes. I already did this with the snap function in W7, but the new ratio seems to be better for this special case. Its not like snapping windows to the side is gone in W8, but this is a feature that I really like.

the desktop is not as touch friendly as the new ui.

(and btw windows rt has a desktop IE as well)

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Well as long as it has the developer tools built in as well, you should be able to change the User Agent string to IE10 mobile.

That's pretty much all what that app in the screenshot I posted earlier is doing. Using IE 10 to render the site, but fooling it with the UA.

I found a few really nice apps that come in handy:

File Manager: As the name implies, it's a Metro file manager. Really well made and polished. It's paid, but the trial has no limitations AFAIK.
Clipboard: Copies data shared using the Share charm to the regular Windows clipboard. Handy if you want to post a link from the Store or a Twitter/YouTube app.
YouTube+: A very decent YouTube app that'll probably come up when you search 'YouTube' anyway. Nice interface and supports downloading. Trial version is ad-supported but I can't find any ads in the app itself.

Doesn't reddit have much worse content than GAF?

If 4chan readers can be made on Windows Phone then I don't see why MS would reject this.

well, here's the certification requirements.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/hh694083.aspx

maybe it would work because of this part

5.1 Your app must not contain adult content, and metadata must be appropriate for everyone

Apps with a rating over PEGI 16, ESRB MATURE, or that contain content that would warrant such a rating, are not allowed. Metadata and other content you submit to accompany your app may contain only content that would merit a rating of PEGI 12, ESRB EVERYONE, or Windows Store 12+, or lower.

We understand that in some cases, apps provide a gateway to retail content, user generated content, or web based content. We classify those apps as either Storefront apps, whose primary function is to aggregate and sell third party media or apps, or Streaming apps, whose primary function is to aggregate and stream web-based images, music, video or other media content. In some cases, it may be acceptable for a Storefront or Streaming app to include some content that might otherwise be prohibited in a single purpose app.

"In some cases". It's not very clear what is and isn't acceptable here. My guess is this exists so companies like Netflix can sell you stuff which would normally fall outside of the strict guidelines.

Anyway, it's not properly defined what would be acceptable in this circumstance so you could spend weeks or months making an app only for Microsoft to tell you no.

Maybe this is a more appropriate place to ask:

If I install Windows 8 and then replace my motherboard in a few years, is it true I'll have to buy another copy of Windows 8?

Windows 7 was cool with me using the same license a second time but I've heard conflicting things about Windows 8.

So would something like this be of interest to you then?

That would be great.

Honestly, being able to switch to the mobile neogaf on desktops would come in handy. Sometimes I'm watching something in a really big window but still want to have neogaf open.

Just had my dreamspark premium account setup, downloading Windows 8 Pro 64bit ..... quite excited.

Anyone have any tips for a windows 8 noob?

use the corners. Right click everywhere and remember that the settings for new applications will always be in the same place. (on the settings menu on the right corner ui bar).
