No, according to Microsoft, Mango is the Windows Phone OS version 7.5. The rest of the branding is just "Windows Phone" from now on and the document clearly says that. No more "Windows Phone 7", just "Windows Phone".

I prefer the numbering personally

I'm sure this has been asked many times at this point, but what's the best Windows 7 Phone to get right now? My HTC Magic is really starting to show it's age and Android is dull. I'm desperately trying to hold on until the new generation of phones are released, but things are creeping along slowly and I don't know how much longer I can tolerate the insane lag on my phone before I toss it out a window. My dad has the LG Optimus 7 and I love playing with the OS, and have been a proud Zune, Zune HD owner for quite some time, so I know what I'm getting into with this.

I'm leaning towards the Samsung Focus or the Omnia 7. Which of the 2 is the better option?

Most of us depending upon where we live have a Samsung phone. Just depends on which phone if your in say Europe or North America.

I hate how everyone is calling Mango "Windows Phone 7.5". That's not the official name.

Seems like hair splitting now. I think we all know what we mean when we say mango, 7.5, and windows phone.

Maybe. I'm probably just annoyed by the shitty reporting and copy/paste articles from most blogs.

Here's what Rafael Rivera wrote right after MIX.
Dropping the ‘7’

With the next release of Windows Phone (codenamed Mango) inching closer, Microsoft has understandably dropped the ‘7’ version reference in the product’s title. The platform will now be referred to as Windows Phone. When referring to specific versions of the platform, expect to see the ‘OS’ suffix tacked onto the end (e.g. Windows Phone OS 7.0, Windows Phone OS 7.1).

when are going to see newer windows phone with next gen hardware?
Probably this fall.

There are probably others but as someone who has owned both an iPhone and Android phone, I've filled most of my app needs already, which I didn't expect to happen so quickly.

Totally agreed here. This was the one area I thought I'd have to shrug and wait till the apps made it to the platform, even if they ever made it. But I've been very surprised to see the major apps, nearly 98% of the apps I had on my iPhone, available on Marketplace. I've been impressed in the app selection, and they definitely deserve some kudos for making the young platform enticing enough and easy enough to code for.

I've had the Omnia since the European launch, love it. From what I've heard, it's a "superior" version of the Focus in terms of looks (I remember Americans bitching on how Europeans got the best phones).

Fuck phoenix. He doesn't know what he's talking about. As I said in that thread, wp7 is already the third best app store, and its only been out since late October. He's making shit up, the app situation on wp7 is one of the things MS should be getting praise for. And it'll get even better once mango comes out. There are two gaps I can think of, both API related: video chat and IM. There are probably others but as someone who has owned both an iPhone and Android phone, I've filled most of my app needs already, which I didn't expect to happen so quickly.

This. All I want him to do is explain his claim, not drum up BS. The only thing's holding the WP7 app market back is the lack of API's and MS's slow release cycle. Otherwise, growth is great.

Speaking of Mango, seems as though you'll be able check in natively:

Sounds like it's going to be powered by Facebook Places though.

Microsoft says they're taking WP7 seriously as a gaming platform and then give us nothing but overpriced Atari 2600 games with achievements for 3 weeks.

There's a disconnect in their messaging here that I'm not sure they're aware of.

Maybe IYO, but fuck no IMO. I'd much rather have it like for the Contacts list, much easier to find stuff that way.

yea that is the way it is going to be after Mango
Windows Phone 7.5 ;)

and I like that, but another hub or two where other like minded apps could shortcut from would be good

You could probably go the middle route and just offer an option of grouping apps. Let the users do it if they'd like. Though it'd be interesting if Microsoft incorporated more hub possibilities, the integratedness of the current hubs is awesome.

I got this Samsung stand for the phone since the USB cord always fall behind the nightstand, not sure if I like it. I am not thrill with the design (Samsung seems to like to ape Sony design) and I also don't like that it is actually two pieces with the clear plastic snap on to the rubber part.

Here is a picture wihout the phone on it.

Anyone here have recommendation? I saw a few of the iPhone stand but not sure they would fit the Focus. I need one for my bathroom since my wife always have her make-up everywhere >< on the counter so I rather not use the rubberized type as they tends to pick up all the small particles.

what is that clock and weather app please? :)

EDIT: found it. now I just need to find a cool water drip pic. :)

oh and nice stand but I keep my phone under my bed at night so emails don't wake me up. l(

It's BigClock app. It's ok, some number fonts are kinda funky looking but I like that it does weather and let you choose background from your pictures (though it doesn't scale well either).

The raindrops on window pane is from XDA site. (One of the wallpaper pack, I don't remember which one it was). :/

Peter over at gdgt had a few interesting things to say concerning the ways in which Microsoft could build the platform quicker.

Four moves Microsoft could make in mobile

TLDR?

1. Bring Zune to iOS and Android
2. Bring Gmail to Windows Phone
3. Buy Skype
4. Bring Office to iOS and Android

I've been saying this about Zune for years, the walled garden approach is unassailable now. The market is hyper competitive and garnering a big slice and luring customers over with exclusive features has very little chance to succeed. I say open the flood gates. Put me in the agree camp with Peter.

"If Zune worked on the iPod touch it might be easier to convince someone to buy a Windows Phone, since they'd already have a subscription that worked on that device."

If Zune worked on the iPod touch or iOS in general, why would anyone buy a WP over an iPhone? it would be one feature less for the WP platform. Bring it to Mac OS, not to iOS or Android. Zune is IMO really one of the selling points were you can say "hey, that's really cool. I might get that". I'm not saying it sells phones, but bringing it to iOS or Android would make it just another app you could get anywhere else and not only on WP.

And buying Skype? Huh. I might be wrong, but it looks like this company is going down in few years. In one way or another. And I think Ballmer said some time ago that they won't do big acquisitions anymore. I think Danger in 2008 was the last one.

To be honest, if Android had Zune I would have bought an Android device. Before I bought my phone (Omnia 7) I had never even seen the WP7 interface in person, it looked nice, but I had no clue how much I would like it. I'm now very glad that I chose WP7.

Branching out Zune into iOS and Android would be a bad idea, unless Windows Phone gains a monopoly. I think if more people were aware of the interface and the full extent of what WP has to offer, it'd be a much more viable idea.

Same applies to Office, why take away a key feature of WP?

Gmail on WP would be nice though, but I'm not sure what advantages it has over just adding a Gmail account to the Outlook client?

If they don't bring Office over to iOS and Android, all those Fortune 500 companies that are using iPads will be happy to switch over to the free Google Docs that will work on all platforms, and then they'll start considering it for their PCs. That will deteriorate Office marketshare in the long run, one of MS's 2 big cash cows.

I think they should bring their services to ios/android BUT only if it is a version or two behind whatever they are doing on pc/wp7. That way you get the services out on the other platforms but everybody still knows the best one is on microsoft products.

What they are doing with bing and messenger is a good example how to poorly manage this. Where versions are launching on ios and android before wp7 gets them. That makes ios/android the "preferred" device for those things..... not the right message at all.

In Zune's case, Microsoft can offer these services to build up the brand. Just because the service is offered on other platforms, WP would be the platform that the service is made for. Its similar to Gmail, I can check Gmail on a multitude of platforms but I love the way gmail is integrated in android. There are features offered on android because android is built with gmail in mind.

WP is built on the platform of having all of the services baked in from the go. I think integration goes a far way to sell a product.

I can't believe the iPhone app is so much better than ours. That's like the opposite of exclusivity.

You do have a great point in bringing it to Mac OS before iOS. They should have done that years ago, the Zune brand would have been in a far better spot that it is now. But I still think Peter is on the money. There's a fear in eliminating an exclusive feature, especially in making it available to two far more successful platforms. The Zune Pass subscriber base would definitely jump, but would it jump at the expense of a very young WP7 platform? Probably. I think the key would be to make sure WP7's implementation was the best version, as was mentioned by ep85, and to offer it at a pivotal point in the growth of WP7.

They've finally started extending the amount of options you can listen to music with your Pass, bringing to the 360 late last year, but if they really want to make it a success they need to make it ubiquitous, that's how Netflix is now rivaling Comcast. Anything connected to the internet, Zune Pass should be on it. It's far and away the best music subscription option, and like you've said probably one of the biggest draws to the platform. Why not bring a ton of new users who would love to be able to listen to anything and everything whatever device they prefer, across all their gadgets, and let it be positive experience. By itself, it's a huge advertisement of the company, and a big stepping stone to removing reservations about the Windows Phone platform.

I don't know how they'd differentiate between Zune Pass on WP7 versus everything else, but if they were to find a nice balance of features, with enough lure to experience it on Microsoft's own platform, I think it'd be a win win for them.

What Microsoft should probably do is release a Zune Mac app that syncs wirelessly with a Zune iOS app. That'll never happen so:

I love to have Zune Pass on iOS (or webOS preferably) but Microspft shouldn't release it unless they can make a better app than the Apple's included media player. A large part of Zune Pass for me is the way it looks and works. I don't think Microsoft will be able to keep that aesthetic on iOS so it'd just be another spotify, grooveshark, rdio, rhapsody, on the platform. A Mac OSX version of Zune is much more important. Most the tech media and the music industry (dont ask me for sources on this :P) use Macs. More importantly, Apple can't gimp a Mac Zune app, it doesn't need to go through an AppStore

For Facebook, you can choose whether to only sync with contacts already on your phone. I'm not sure what you mean by email sync, though.

All of my email accounts (Hotmail, Gmail and Rogers/Yahoo) have a manual option for syncing. Facebook doesn't have the option, but I don't believe Facebook does much (any?) syncing until you go the timeline in the People hub.

Thanks for the help guys! Just figuring out the ins and outs for now. Not to be a downer, but going from my previous nokia n85 to the venue pro seems like a downgrade in some aspects. But I have to figure out tons of things yet, so my opinion will probably change.
