Windows Phone 7 |OT|

I've been using my Focus for a couple months now, but I'll be darned, and learned a few things from a recent Windows Team Blog entry on the keyboard.

Itai’s 7 favorite keyboard tips for Windows Phone 7

1. Type fast and trust the keyboard to correct you.

2. Double-tap Space at the end of a sentence to add a period and capitalize the start of the next sentence.

3. Tap & hold various keys to reveal hidden menus. The period key is especially handy.

4. Boost your speed: Tap the Shift or Numbers/Symbols key, slide your finger to the character you want, and then release. Saves you a tap.

5. In the suggestion bar, tap “+” to teach the phone a new word.

6. To undo auto-correction: tap the word, then tap the first candidate (the original word) in the suggestion bar.

7. Multilingual? Go to Settings>Keyboard to select other keyboard languages.

Science behind the Keyboard

Alright, I bit the bullet and ordered myself an unlocked Focus on ebay, I remember reading a bit about that SD card fiasco when the phone first came out, can anyone make any suggestions? Sticking in a 16 gig card should do me pretty nicely, so something with that capacity would be great. Sorry for asking questions I'm sure have been asked many times before, this thread is huge and search isn't playing friendly with me.

Thanks!

The only official SD card is a 8 gig SanDisk class 4. The host of the windows phone podcast has been using a 16 gig Kingston class 4.

I haven't picked one up yet but probably will soon.

Worth getting Samsung Focus for $350 brand new with unlock code today?

I have an iPhone 3G and I'm having a hard time with how slow the phone has been lately.

Trying to figure out if I should make the move...

Thanks for the help guys! Just figuring out the ins and outs for now. Not to be a downer, but going from my previous nokia n85 to the venue pro seems like a downgrade in some aspects. But I have to figure out tons of things yet, so my opinion will probably change.

Nokia phones can win a spreadsheet feature war, but I guarantee you that the Windows Phone will be a better overall experience, especially if you take full advantage of its strengths, namely Zune, Xbox, Office, and the hubs.

My email and overall office integration is leaps and bounds ahead of everything else I use - iPhone included. The "I am gonna be late" button is simply epic. Zune, as everyone else points out, poops on iTunes from the sky.

Now that I have cut and paste, I am 100% happy. Games and apps have a way to go to catch up, obviously, but right now it's a very, very excellent experience for me. Again, more work than pleasure. YMMV.

Anydody else uninstall apps that are good but have butt-ugly Start Tiles?

Yea... I will give up some funtionalty if you ugly up my purdy screen. ;)

Even have a dialogue going now with a very cool dev on a very cool app to fix his tile logo and he is actually working on it... cool

Id say $350 is worth it.... really you should go to your local retailer and try one out yourself before making any decision. Assuming you like the apple way of doing things you will like wp7. wp7 is closer to ios than android but it lives in the middle between them.

It's really the little things that are bothering me. The fact that you can't select multiple contacts for deletion, or all of them was a problem for me. I can't set any MP3 as a ringtone, which probably should have been there from the start. I cant set the phone in mass storage mode so that I can easily access the files, and copy/paste them(though i'm finding the zune software to be competent enough for these purposes).

I am really beginning to appreciate the synchronization of contacts though, it is rather brilliant. Also, I cannot access the marketplace from the phone even though it was launched early last month. I had to use a workaround for the PC, but it should have worked out of the box, since there is no other way to install applications.

Overall, I am really beginning to like the platform. Here's hoping future updates really help it mature into a strong one.

gotta share this app with you guys... Voice2mail Plus...N ew PLUS version hitting marketplace tomorrow hopefully.

one button record and sends wmv to email of your choice with predefined address lists and or text notes and attach pictures (with location and mapping attached)

this dev is good, everything is smooth and thoughtful. You can save on phone or just have all emailed to yourself which will then be on phone, PC and or anyone else's email with voice, text and picture notes. the little touches like add from contacts and then saving a contact list within the app...brilliant.

crazy good for anyone on the go or doing business or traveling that wants notes and or pictures sent while on road and have it waiting for them in email or to have shared with someone else's email. It is what One Note is trying to be on the phone but is far too complicated because of the cloud.

the current version is on the MP now as voice2mail but I would wait for plus with the new features. can only be sent as WMV ATM (Due to APIs unfortunately, maybe?) so no opening voice notes on iPhone

I am excited because I will use this for my work every week now

LindyReader logo is pretty ugly but goddamn if it isn't my most used app to date.

Reading manga on the go have never been better.

Ugh more cockteasing.

This phone is almost a year old and it better not release at 199.99 with new 2yr.

Plan on getting mine off contract anyway. Not gonna get stuck with a slightly updated 1st gen phone for 2 years ...

I didn't have time to read the whole thread.......

I want a new mobile so I am considering a few. Can someone advise me for these prices which is the best value for money. I am leaning towards the HTC Trophy.

These are the prices I can get them for...

HTC 7 Mozart @ $545 NZD = $440 USD
HTC 7 Trophy: @ $455 NZD = $367 USD
HTC HD7 8GB @ $545 NZD = $440 USD

If it worth the extra $80 for the HD or Mozart? and if so, which one is the better of the 2?

Now that Bing is going to be the default search engine on the BlackBerry OS with more integration on the OS level in the next release, do you think it's going to be better than the WP7 version? :lol

The Trophy and the Mozart are pretty much the same phone. The Mozart has a 8MP cam instead of 5MP, but it doesn't take better pictures. If you like 4.3" screens, get the HD7, if not, get the Trophy.

Windows Phone 8 sure as hell better require every single phone to have a Dual Core A9, 768mbs of ram, and a gpu atleast on par with a SGX540MP2 as a absolute minimum baseline.

That way, the games made for it can be halfway decent and I might actually consider getting one.

Halfway decent? Have you even played all the games available?

Also: What is SGX540MP2? Google shows me absolutely nothing (zero results) so what are you talking about?

Yeah gaming really isn't a problem compared to other mobile phone platforms. Its come along quite well and has some hood looking titles.

Have you seen games in the hood? Shit's not pretty.

He's talking about SGX543MP2.

Thanks. Seems to be the iPad 2 GPU.

I still don't understand what his point is. Windows Phone needs a GPU on par with iPad 2 to be able to run halfway decent games? That's bullshit, because there's currently no mobile gaming system that has this hardware (except the iPad 2, of course) and you can find halfway decent games on any of these.

Mobile games in particular work so great because they're not built to be fascinating technical achievements, but because they're designed to work on mobile platforms. It's ridiculous to even assume that there's that much hardware power needed to develop a great game for any platform. Is he a developer of Windows Phone 7 games and disappointed with the hardware? If not; there's no reason for him to even post such a statement.

We have lots of games, lots of rubbish, but we have excellent ones as well. Devs are complaining about the tools given by Microsoft (or at least they were), not about the hardware itself.

I'm waiting on quad core multi-GPU hardware so I can run Wordament with no slowdown.

Wordament has slowdown? I'm on a Focus and haven't experienced any issues, other than the sneaky siphoning of my battery power.

The new update is out.

Without a delay. I'm impressed.

Were they? I was under the impression that the tools were best in breed, but it was a lack of APIs that were hindering them.

The complains had nothing to do with the IDE per se. The biggest complain from game devs is the lack of native development, which is more of a political decision, I think.

SGX543MP is a fantastic gpu. Runs circles around the Tegra 2 according to anandtech's benchmarks.

That's why Sony opted for it for the NGP.

Apple's strength comes from the fact that the devs have a couple of standard sets of hardware to program around, similar to consoles. They can maximize the capabilities since they know what they have to work with.

Developers are greatly limited when they have to code their software to work on much weaker phones as well.

MS can easily beat apple at it's own game if it mandates that each Windows Phone 8 has at a minimum, a dual core A9 cpu, 768mbs of ram and a SGX543MP2 gpu at least. That should be the baseline, not Tegra 2 which performs far worse.

If MS does that, you will start seeing some truly epic games on the platform, because every developer will be able to program around that hardware.

How's that different from Windows Phone 7?

Can anyone tell me what the lowest I could pay monthly with any of the carriers with a Windows Phone? Lowest voice package, 2gb (or so), and unlimited text. I'm looking to trim down so my bills monthly aren't so high. Currently paying $70~ to my dad while I use the family package with my Focus. Just wondering if there is a cheaper solution around $50. Doubtful, but I figured if anyone knows it's GAF.

I don't think you will get lower than that with all the things you ask for (such as 2gb data, unlimited message). You are already getting discount being tack on to your dad account and not having to pay full price for a line.

All the others main carriers are the same if not higher (Verizons).

I don't know what company your dad work for but my company offer corporate discount for At&t (it's not much but I take whatever saving I can from At&t).

Yeah, I didn't think so. He currently works for GM, but he tried getting a discount and it wasn't doable. Didn't know if there was a pay as you go kinda thing, but I'm pretty sure that's a rip-off anyway. Thanks for the help.

So now Bing search and Bing Map is going to be on RIM devices .. what's next? Bing on Apple ...oh wait.

I don't mind them putting their products on other platform as it is a prudent thing to do but when their own platform is getting left behind and they are wondering while their stock price is sinking and they have images of slow and clueless ...

Can you live with 200mb data? I know it is very limited but that will give you another $10.00 off. If you have constant access to Wi-fi then 200mb is not bad as you can still check email and do some search without exceeding it.

Look for a local cell provider they tend to be cheap.

True. Aren't most CDMA based, though? I'm probably completely wrong. I know I could go with Cricket, but I'd need a CDMA version. Sprint is that, correct? And they have a WP, I believe.

simple wireless is cheap but they lease tmo's network so who know what will become of them a year from now if the att acquisition goes through. 3g will also be an issue if you have a focus. 2g will work but not 3g.

They tend to be yeah. Check how simple mobile is in your area, coverage wise. They share t-mobile bands though, so you'd have the choice of an HD7 unless you bring something in from europe/canada.
