I'm about to pull my hair out here. I've had my Samsung Focus for a few months now, and everything's been going great. However, for the last 3 days, my battery life went to shit. I can charge it to full, NOT EVEN USE IT, leave it sitting overnight on my dresser, get up the next morning and the battery's drained. WTF?!

I'll then charge it, use it normally throughout the day just fine, but then the cycle repeats: dead battery when I get up the next morning.

What could be draining it? I'm trying to think of any apps I've installed and am drawing a blank on what it could be.

Did you try this?

Is it really drain? I think after the last Samsung firmware the battery meter on Focus is mess up. I have this happen twice already where it would show that battery is empty but if I take the battery out and reboot then it seems fine (ie battery was actually full but the battery meter was off).

edit: try what MCD said. I didn't know this was a report problem. But yeah, it seems to be the battery meter and not the battery itself.

How does one go about customizing the look of the OS more? I saw someone posted a pic a few pages back.

Edit: Or maybe that was in the "argument: WP will beat out Android" thread.

What you saw in those threads was some really creative use of the various hubs and live tiles to create a unique look. For example, if you want a Tron theme, you can put a Tron pic in your pictures folder, then make that your background so it shows up on the two-wide pictures tile, then listen to the Tron soundtrack which puts that on the Zune tile. Then visit a few Tron sites with the logo and other stuff, you can then zoom in real tight and then pin the site to the start screen so that the tile will have the Tron logo or other Tron art, and you can zoom on black space before pinning to make a dark tile. Finally, move your Tron tiles together, pick a color scheme to match (there are more color options if you jailbreak the phone) and voila, Tron theme. It's a bit of effort, but I've seen some really cool stuff.

Is there somewhere where there is a showcase of some of those? That sounds really interesting, especially for a OS that isn't customizable ...

Why are they implementing Windows Live Messenger in the new versions? It's something it should already have. Gah.

It should already have everything but it doesn't because they have finite time and resources. They have to prioritize functionality and they decided that live messenger was something they could let a 3rd party handle until they could get their official integrated solution out.

The one and only thing that pisses me off about Mango is that Microsoft is moving backwards as far as hardware requirements go.

They should move to a higher set of minimum hardware requirements alongside Mango.

That way, developers can design each app to maximally use dual core A9 processors and a dual core SGX543 gpu.

If the minimum requirements that developers built mango games around was Dual core A9 processors, and a dual core SGX543, then Mango games could look almost as good as NGP games, or as good as Xbox 360 games on a small screen.

Instead of moving up, microsoft is lowering the minimum requirements to a 800 MHz ARMv7 processor. Ugh!

That's actually a second generation Snapdragon with a better GPU (Adreno 205). Not anything to get excited about, but it's definitely not a regression.

Anyway, just about to run the Chevron/Walsh fix. Chris is awesome.

What's great is now that Chris figured out the simple issue (and MS verified), there should be no problem making an updater for Mango :D

It's just annoying that it's a first party property that is done much better on both iOS and BlackBerry.

Spoken like someone who doesn't understand the difference between rendering a game to run at 1280x720 on a 50 inch monitor vs rendering a game to run at 800x480 or 480x320 on a 4 inch screen.
spoken like someone who doesn't understand the performance requirements for higher resolutions

Well first if they were going to create a new spec with that level of performance, who's to say they wouldn't up the resolution along with it? Heck, NGP isn't even iPhone 4 resolution.

But fine, let's assume they wouldn't. Let's compare things versus NGP.

NGP has:
  • Twice as many CPU cores (potentially clocked higher than what a phone would likely use)
  • Twice as many GPU cores (potentially clocked higher than what a phone would likely use)
  • Dedicated VRAM
  • Lower OS footprint and resource usage
  • Can be coded 'to the metal', or at least closer than XNA and silverlight

Is it higher resolution? Sure, but we're talking about 960×544 versus 800x480 (522,240 vs 384,000 pixels). That's 36% more pixels. Yeah that requires more fillrate, but if you think the above spec difference is only sufficient to hit that milestone ... you're nuts. No ... bananas. B-A-N-A-N-A-S.

As for the 360, the NGP - while impressive - is already known to not be quite PS3 / 360 in performance. Given the above, ie. it wouldn't put it nearly at NGP level ... simple transitive logic (a<b, b<c, therefore a<c) tells you how that would turn out versus consoles.

spoken like someone who doesn't understand the definition of almost as good, which was precisely what I said.

It's certainly not implausible for games built optimally to make use of a dual core A9 cpu and a dual core SGX543 can't look almost as good as an NGP games considering they would be running at 2/3rds the resolution and on a smaller screen.

They can still include it in Windows Phone 7 and not just release in a more updated version of the phone. Through an update or something; WLM is a very essential property of Microsoft.

So you're disregarding the other performance-affecting things I mentioned and only looking at number of cores?

Regardless, citing 'almost' is ambiguous. How can you say I don't understand the definition when it isn't fixed to begin with? Most would assume almost to mean nearly ... and given the performance and environment differences, I don't see it as being nearly.

Also, explain how it would be almost NGP, yet equal to 360 when NGP won't even do that?

wifi hot spot support???? woooohoooo!!!

artist wallpaper on lockscreen is a night touch, sht like that is gonna separate WP7 from the other platforms.

Infinity Blade looks better than Every Party.

Adobe needs to fix flash on mobile first. Its fine in android since their browser is sort of laggy at times and the os is also not known for its smoothness, but wp7 stands out with its buttery smoothness and flash would really put a strain on that.

Oh really? Damn, I heard there'd be a dev release much earlier...

Last I heard it was this month........

Edit: In fact I would imagine it will be released after their unveiling of all the features of Mango on May 24th.

An official WLM by Microsoft would be as useless as the 3rd party one we already have. Nobody outside the WP team and few selected partners are allowed to code natively for the OS, not even other teams at MS. Without socket support in the SDK we won't see anything good. Still curious to see how good IM+ is going to be pre-Mango.

As for the "zomg, Microsoft, you so stupid! you lowered the min requirements for mango!". They didn't and we already discussed this. It's not "800 MHz ARMv7", it's second gen Snapdragon. The second gen is with 800 MHz as fast as the first gen with 1 GHz, is more efficient, features a new GPU and is available with up to 1.4 GHz. A dual-core CPU is no requirement (lol), because MS wants to keep the costs for manufacturers down and it's no option either, because the current CE6R3 kernel in the Windows Phone OS 7 doesn't support SMP.

goddamn.
despite all the little quirks, the missing features, the silliness with the update/s, i still love my windows phone... but goddamn does mango make me so, so happy. granted, i'm sure ios5 and android will have a lot of these features but still, this is great news. i'm so excited!

wait what

what the hell microsoft?

gah what is the point of having so many products in your portfolio if you can't even use them. urgh.

Everyone has to use the same SDK and you can see and feel that in Microsoft's apps like Facebook or the WP Help app (or whatever it's called).

Mango is getting out of control. I pray that Microsoft and everyone else involved can sell what seems to be a mini-reboot. Obviously a lot is dependent on what iOS5 brings as well, but I'm increasingly confident that WP will have comparable-to-better features than anything else out there.

Now I know how the Verizon Trophy people feel. The HD7S was announced a long time ago and AT&T said it was due "in the coming weeks". Well, its over a month now and no sign of the phone. No dates or announcements since then. At least the longer they take, the better the chance that I'll just use Android until the Mango phones launch. If they announce new phones on May 24th, or at least hint at something, that will help a ton.

Ultimatum said:

Dev release will probably include the stuff talked about at MIX (developer facing stuff like APIs) and exclude all of these other updates. But yeah, I believe they were planning to push something out in May. Maybe we'll hear about it on the 24th.

The first release of the new developer tools will be released this month, I think. The Mango beta for developer devices however will have to wait a bit longer. Probably around July.

I really hope that one of the thousand+ APIs in Mango gives read/write access to SkyDrive. Every WP7 owner has 25 gigs of storage in the cloud, there is no reason why apps shouldn't be using that to allow us to backup their state.

It kind of sucks that if you delete a game or reset your phone you lose everything.

Hell, I'd like to see xbox use it too :P

So it looks like Mango's release will coincide with a bunch of next generation Windows phones or am I reading all of this wrong?

So so tired of waiting to buy one but Sprint's offering is terrible and I want something big, shiney, and keyboard-less like half of super massive android phones out there. Please tell me my waiting will be worth it.

Yeah, I don't want to post rumors as something official, so I'm gonna wait for the official unveiling.

That's correct. We don't have a date for the new phones, but they're coming with Mango this Fall.
