pretty cool

It does work very well.... the only issue is the top row doesn't work right because of the way the spacing is designed. In the comments the author also posted a website where you can create your own tiles for categories you want to add yourself.

Any word if the upcoming Mango phones will support nVidia Tegra2 or Tegra3 chipsets....

I would really like to get some dual or quad core love on WP7 :)
No multi CPU SoC for Windows Phone OS 7.x. The kernel doesn't support SMP. That will change with a new CE7 or W8 kernel in the next WP release.

They definitely will not. The only vendor that is currently making SoC for Windows Phone 7 is Qualcomm. Also, it sounds like the version of Windows CE that WP7 is currently running on does not support multiple cores, so the best we're likely to see if the 1.5 GHz Snapdragon in the HTC Flyer tablet (or the 1.4 GHz Snapdragon in the Palm Pre 3).

The initial release of Windows Phone supported the 8x50 SoC
Mango is adding support for the 7x30 and 8x55 SoCs

I'm guessing that "Windows Phone 8" will have a Windows 8 ARM core, which will have support NVIDIA, TI, and Qualcomm SoCs.

Would you advise people who don't upgrade often to check out WP when 8 appears?

I don't run on a two year cycle compared to what most people do with electronics (i.e. laptops, cell phones).

I advise people not to buy phones that are subsidized by the carriers. Buy them unlocked, as open market devices when possible. That way you can sell your phone whenever you want, get a new one whenever you want and it sells better, because it's unlocked.

But seriously, right now it doesn't feel like the first gen Snapdragon is holding back the current OS build. People forget that, unlike on Android, the whole Metro UI is GPU accelerated, making it as smooth as iOS. It's fast, smooth and responsive. I obviously can't tell you how the OS performance is going to be after the massive Mango update, especially with the new multi-tasking scenario. But I doubt that Microsoft would release an update that cripples the performance. In fact, Mango even improves the performance in certain scenarios, like scrolling in 3rd party apps.

Win Embedded 7 certainly supports multicore CPUs. In fact multicore is basically the way to go.....the GC should run on another core to maintain a responsive UI.

Windows Phone 7 uses a CE6R3/CE7 hybrid kernel, iirc, but it's mainly based on CE6 R3, not Embedded 7. Embedded 7 went RTM this year.

I can think of two reasons:

-the launch period is long gone with no new phones out (htc hd7s should've been out by now) I'm actually surprised the displays stayed up that long. In my local store, they are STILL up. But I guess that was what "premier partner" meant. I'm willing to bet they have sold more wp7 devices than anyone else.

-I'll have to look this up, but I'm pretty sure they'll be doing another similar promotion with the mango devices this fall. What I would change if I were microsoft is the fact that, although the displays were nice, it was clear that the employees were not properly schooled on the benefits of the os.
I am thinking they are resetting for the two new phones HD7s and Dell Venue Pro V.2. Its too bad we are not getting more mid year upgrade phone. ATT version of Samsung Omnia would be nice to round up this rumor 2nd line up.

I went to my local at&t store today and they have completely remove all Windows Phone 7 display .... there is not a single sign left. All the demo phones are gone. Not sure if they are planning a new promotion or what.

Anyway play with the new Infuze, that is one big screen. It would be nice to get WP7 version of that phone.

I hope that means new phones are coming in. I went to costco to look at the Samsung Focus (i was close to pulling the trigger on it) and they stop carrying it. I did clarify with the guy if they stopped carrying it and he said yes. "New phones coming in and we have to make room". Note he didn't specifically say new Win7 models, but I assume he meant that.

Looks like Costco is also clearing out the LG Quantum, they're offering 3 months of Zune pass if you buy the Quantum by June 24th.

I hope they're new handsets coming out in the next couple of weeks. I was all set to buy the Focus, but now I'm going to wait a little to see what MS shows next week.

What 8 may offer is a pretty big unknown.

Assuming we don't hear much about it when Mango hits, it would be hard to state either way. I will say that with Mango (7.5), we will have an OS that is on par with anything currently available in terms of features, plus all the things that differentiate WP7. So to be honest, I wouldn't see an issue recommending either getting a current phone (since they'll all get Mango) or grabbing a Mango launch phone.

Obviously hindsight is 20/20, so WP8 could end up being something incredible ... but given the current smartphone OS landscape, WP7 seems like a decent enough bet.

Well, the problem with getting the phone now on contract, you would be subject to another round of carrier "testing" before Mango get release to current phones. If one can wait I would go with fall/winter hardware and see what available. 2nd camera would be good and with multitasking a faster processor probably doesn't hurt.

On another note, I was looking at the Nokia phone N8 (I think) and they are really pretty!

The only handset we know that is coming out on AT&T in the next few weeks (or anytime now, actually) is the HTC HD7S. There is also the Dell Venue Pro, which just recently got AT&T bands. Don't hold your breath for anything else until the Mango phones in the fall. If you want a Focus, it's still going to be one of the top phones until the fall, and it's available everywhere else, so I'm not sure why costco isn't carrying any more, probably a space issue on their part. But like I said, we have no indication that there will be a slate of new WP7 devices before Mango on any carrier.

What reason would I use to justify why I would give my wife my focus and use one of our upgrades on the HD7S? :)

She needs a new phone. Or should I keep focus?

I'm in the same scenario: in need of a phone and with an upgrade to use. I'm thinking the HD7S is going to be $199 with the two year. For that price, or a little more, I can get a mint Focus on Ebay, and keep my upgrade for the Mango phones. But really, the only reason I haven't pulled the trigger on an HD7S is that it's not available at the store.

I thought this slide from a MIX session was pretty interesting.

The display and GPS sensor don't draw as much power as I thought.

so which is better in your opinion?

I do like the bigger screen but wonder what else I'm going to miss?

How is that possible? On what carrier are you?

Samsung Omnia7, bought separately and unlocked, running it on a ePlus/BASE simcard in Germany. Still saying 7004 is the newest available version.

Could you check again? Microsoft stopped any updates for the Omnia7 few weeks ago, but the next roll out started yesterday.

Just did moments ago - no dice.
And I can´t get the patch program to run, as my phone is not entering "download mode". Instead I get a white picture showing a phone, laptop and usb cable.
Ideas, anyone?

This can't be right. If you go to "settings", then "about", does it say "OPN" as carrier? Did you try another PC with Zune installed? Is Zune up-to-date?

edit: Damn, you'll have to wait a bit longer.

Today we restarted updating Omnia 7 phones. The restart is happening in phases. Go to the Zune software and manually check for an update. If you don’t see one today, look again next Tuesday when we plan to deliver updates to additional Omnia 7 customers. Operators being targeted in later phases include Deutsche Telekom, Orange, and SFR.

What will be in the update? If you haven’t already received the March “copy and paste” update, you’ll receive one update that includes both “copy and paste” and 7392. If you installed copy and paste before we halted updates to Omnia 7s, you’ll just get 7392. You can learn more about our updates and how to install them from Update Central.

We don’t yet have an update readied for the Focus variant, but we are making solid progress. Mike or I will jump online when we have it definitively scheduled for you.

One final important note. A small number of people who’ve already installed the March “copy and paste” update on their Omnia 7 might have trouble installing 7392, but Samsung today published a new tool designed to fix this. If you get stuck during installation, please see this support article, which contains troubleshooting steps and a link to the new Samsung tool.

I guess you have a T-Mobile branded device then. This sucks.

You could jailbreak it and remove the branding (if it's there).

Got PacMan CE DX yet? I'm actually impressed with it, it's pretty faithful and the controls aren't a garbage virtual thumbstick. It's best described as gestural: swipe up to go up, expand pinch to bomb. I'm really digging it, I hope the $7 price point doesn't scare people on my friends list away from getting it.

It's virtually identical to the XBLA version (resolution difference obviously) so the price is almost a bargain.

I'll pick it up when I get home tonight. I was going to download it during my morning commute, but the 105MB download put a stop to that.

do people actually use camera phone pics for anything other than posting on the web, facebook, or email? i really can't see the need for using any resolution higher than 2 megapixel from a camera phone.

Im in the sign and graphics industry and have turned to my phone as the main source of General image capturing. Obviously not for artwork but surveying and proofing. IMO, its the lens and anti-shake/blur that needs upgrading 5-10mp is plenty. Still having a hard time getting crystal clear pics.

An update about PacMan CE DX, there aren't as many modes as I originally thought (CE2, Manhattan and Dark Cave?) but I'm still really happy with the purchase, it's as addictive as it is on the Xbox.

Hard to say without the HD7S being out. For one, the camera on the Focus is the best on WP7, and we don't know if they made any improvements for the S. Also, are they going to be packing a bigger battery on the S? The Focus gets decent battery life, while that will be a major concern for the S. But again, until the S comes out and is reviewed, we won't know if the improvements go beyond just the screen (and even in that case, we need to know if it's anywhere near SAMOLED quality, which I doubt).

Rumors about new HTC devices, eh?
According to detailed tips to reliable sources, HTC is working to expand its WP7 market share by building two new handsets.

As reported by the supposed leaks, the first handset in question is the HTC Eternity, a Mangoed WP7 device that will sport a 4.7″ AMOLED screen, and a 8 megapixel camera capable of taking wide-angle pictures. It will include microHDMI out capabilities.

The second rumored handset is dubbed the HTC Omega, and is a much cheaper device. WMPowerUser compares it to the HTC Trophy, a somewhat popular current WP7 handset. It will sport a similar camera, but only a 3.8″ screen.

Each handset will run on a 1.5 Ghz processor, providing more than sufficient heft to handle whatever Mango may bring.
Edit: MicroHDMI out doesn't sound very Windows Phone-ish, though.

batt life on my hd7 is horrendous. like evo horrendous. luckily, eBay has travel chargers with extra batts for dirt cheap. I think I got a charger w 2 batts for $10 shipped.

Could you explain how long your battery life is?

a 4.7" screen is insame, almost a tablet! My 4.3" HD7 is envy right now (I must have that device too, but my pockets are small - money and size wise.

heavy usage, half a day.

Then you should not complain about it. My experience with the HD7:

- Normal use, some calls, e-mail and other stuff checked every 30 min: 2 days
- More use, a lot of calls, e-mail and some stuff done on it: less than a day
- High usage, gaming sections continually: 2 hours tops.

Isn't the HD7 pretty much an EVO with no 4G? Same Snapdragon, same sized screen, etc.

That's what I was thinking. Every one I know of who has an HD7/EVO love their devices but say battery life sucks....lasting on average half a day.

I'd love a device 4" Super AMOLED screen and some decent specs (hopefully to Sprint).

What constitutes decent specs? This is a WP7 phone.

samsung focus owner...how the hell do you control the volume on a call besides loud as hell and pretty loud??

is there a setting somewhere that is hidden? did i mess something up when I unlocked?
