I guess I'll never learn. IM+ won't be great. Why not? Because Microsoft doesn't allow other 3rd party developers to create a (better) Live messenger. This sucks. WLM users have to wait for Mango to get a better messenger.

I don't think the WP7 spec allows for anything that will blow my socks off, unfortunately.
Good looking hardware with a high build quality is not bound to the WP7 spec.

I would like to hear Microsoft's rationale for this one.

WPCentral uploaded a preview video of the app and it does look good.

Instead, take a gander at our video tour of the new, near universal instant messaging app that supports AIM, Facebook, Google Talk, ICQ, Jabber, MySpace, Skype and Yahoo! The one omission is MSN, which is evidently due to a Microsoft mandate (more on that later). No biggy though, as we'll have full integration with MSN and the OS in Mango this fall.

We'll have to wait for that.

IM+ can't use Windows Live Messenger due to Microsoft policy

They are seemingly taking Apple’s approach, and not allowing apps that they think will duplicate functionality. Of course, that functionality doesn’t exist yet, so maybe there is something else going on that we don’t know about. It is worth nothing that IM+ for Windows Mobile also doesn't support Windows Live Messenger, so it's not an OS thing.
http://www.wpcentral.com/im-will-not-support-windows-live-messenger

It's not an OS thing, but it's allowed on other platforms like iOS, Android, Symbian and Windows? Really strange. And it's cool that Mango has it build in, but with this almost non-existent notification system it would be great to have everything in one app.

The US version of the Omnia 7 would be the Samsung Focus. I have the Optimus 7 and the LCD screen is okay, the camera is average. I got it, because it was much cheaper than the Omnia 7 at the time when I bought it.
Here are the prices of the phones at one of the retailers (all unlocked, prices in AUD):

LG Optimus 7 16GB: $499
HTC HD7 16GB: $429
Samsung Omnia 7 8GB: $399
Samsung Focus 8GB: $529

In comparison, the iPhone 4 16GB is $859 :P

Might it be worth getting the Focus instead? It's the most expensive, but I'd be willing to pay quite a bit more for expandable storage. I'm also considering the HD7 but I've heard the screen has ghosting issues.

Announcing ChevronWP7 Labs

It’s been a while since we posted something. Between fixing state machines and avoiding the paparazzi, we have been busy tinkering with Microsoft behind the scenes.

As you may remember, one of our goals was to make Windows Phone development more accessible. Plans have recently solidified and we can now reveal a solution we’ve been working on.

As announced on the Windows Phone Dev Podcast, we will soon be launching an approved Windows Phone unlocking service as part of ChevronWP7 Labs. This will be available to developers across all skill levels and all regions.

The service will require a small fee — currently via PayPal — to offset costs but we assure you it will be more affordable than the App Hub. Those who wish to write and immediately publish apps are recommended to sign up to the App Hub instead.

We’re excited to be making this service available to users with the support of the Windows Phone team.

Follow us on @ChevronWP7 to know the moment we launch.

So right now there isn't a decent Facebook messenger app is there?
fim?

The notification system on the OS needs a little work in my opinion. I would like the notification popup to remain at the top until you select it, or have it disappear after a few minutes. Too often I do not see missed calls or text messages in the titles. My eyes miss it if I'm looking to navigate to a specific app

What about the icons on the lockscreen?

Sounds stupid but I honestly barely notice it, aside from emails from my Gmail account. Maybe the icons on the lockscreen could each have a different colour as they are all white at the moment. Perhaps its the similar reason why I miss them in the tiles; the text in the tiles are always white. I do have the Light theme which probably doesn't help.

About that: For some reason I am significantly more accurate in typing on the screen keyboard when the background is white, and the keys are black. And about the SMS thing; why is there no draft feature?

I don't know if you're willing to import, but the Optimus 7 can be purchased for ~285 AUD (including delivery with DHL) from handtec

I'm considering upgrading to a WP7 phone. I just personally like the OS better than Apple's, but I'm curious how people enjoy it. My time with it has been somewhat limited.

I have had mine for a few weeks now and I really love it, no regrets. The OS imo is fantastic. Looks good and is fast as well. I have the Focus and have already convinced a buddy to get one as well.

Edit: Also it pretty much does everything I need it to, like the comment below it is missing some stuff, but Mango will be a nice upgrade.

If you're in it for the interface you won't be disappointed. I simply can't go back to phone UIs that are just ugly little blocks. Until Mango pushes out later this year WP7 is down some features from other major OSs but everyone should be fairly similar after that.

So basically yeah, get one. You'll very likely love it.

$175 for a brand new Focus a good deal?
very good deal. (I have an optimus 7 which i got for $160)

Edit: are you getting it to use as your primary phone, play around with, or develop for?

Wait a month and Charred will sell you an Omnia for cheap. :P
In a month I should be getting the Pre3 but I'm still going to keep the Optimus 7. <3 Zune Pass.

So... I might start to think Omnia 7 was a bad choice. The sound problem is pissing me off and now that I actually tried listening to music with headphones, I noticed that the quality is crappy or to be more precice, there is a constant noise in the background :/

Awesome. Great to hear. How's the App market on the phone?

Expectedly small but growing at a very rapid pace. Most of the "biggies" are here: Netflix, various RSS/Twitter clients, stuff like that. Anything in particular you're interested in?

As you might expect Microsoft has put a focus on games as well. There are Live-enabled games with achievements and everything. They tend to be more expensive than the typical $.99 iPhone apps but they all have demos available and are generally of good quality. Many are iPhone ports at the moment but that's slowly changing.

Mostly productivity applications and the like. I heard Office, upon release, was sort of an abridged or neutered version, so I'm curious if MS has added to Office or if someone's come out with an app substitute.

Unfortunately I don't have a ton of experience with Office yet. Viewing stuff is just fine; editing it seems a little difficult due only to the small screen. Hopefully someone else can give you some more information.

Come this fall when Mango is pushed out (yeah, you're going to hear that a lot for now unfortunately) my understanding is that there will be tighter integration as well as better Skydrive integration, which I assume is good for stuff like Office.

Thanks for the info. I'll keep my ears open and see how it goes.

Sounds from games etc. are way too loud, on level 1 it ridiculous. I can't even go up to 10 because I am in fear the rear speaker is going to burst. And there are 30 levels, right?

Do transparent wallpapers require any sort of crazy mod? Looks pretty nifty.
Nope, pretty easy. You have to mail the picture to yourself and set that picture as wallpaper directly from the e-mail.

I think it's an awesome idea that they're approving it/helping with it but still keeping it unofficial and optional. It puts the responsibility on the users if they (the users) screw anything up. I'd be really disappointed if pirating apps start popping up, though.

yeah but I feel like there's a great opportunity to get a developer community going here and piracy concerns shouldn't stop that

I bet we see some great apps hobbyist just put on github and whatnot because they can't be arsed doing the apphub stuff

A lot of people aren't looking to make money which seems to be the focus of the walled garden approach.

post some good ones. I'd like a new wallpaper.

Did she pick out the Qunatum and Focus from the list of WP7 devices? I'm curious why she/you didn't just go for the ones already available on T-Mobile...

Wow, cheers, that's a steal for that price.

On another note, though, what sort of hardware updates are going to coincide with Mango? Is it worth waiting for a new set of phones?

Second gen Snapgradon with better efficiency and better GPU + an optional gyro. That's all we know so far.

I picked it because it was the lightest device with an SAMOLED display. She doesn't have data so the T-Mobile AWS frequency in the Venue Pro and HD7 wasn't a factor.

Why do apps have 'lite' versions when they could just offer a trial?

What's your fave craiglist apps? I can't choose between the many alternatives... after browsing and trying a bunch of them, I've narrowed my list down to Craiglist A+, Craigslist deLUXE and Craigster.

I'd pick it for the same reasons but I'd imagine anyone who usually takes a purse around and/or has long fingernails would prioritize other features (I'm assuming about your sister of course, pay me no mind if she sticks her phone in her jeans' pocket and trims her nails often).

Charred Greyface said:

Maybe it's just laziness. They already have the "lite" code from the iOS or Android version, so they port it over. Or maybe they just don't know about the trial option.
