If Apple does release a alternate cheaper iPhone model then Microsoft will be under pressure to respond to that, especially from an OEM like Nokia.

Oh and Microsoft needs to do something about their Mango browser. It's very disappointing.

It was always part of the Microsoft + Nokia deal to release cheaper Windows Phones and it will happen in 2012.

We'd raised our own concerns in interviews with both Stephen Elop and Microsoft's Aaron Woodman in the past week that Nokia could have difficulty pushing the Windows Phone platform low enough to fill the holes left by Symbian's departure in the bottom rungs of the market, but the Nokia CEO is making it very clear that he thinks that won't be a problem. In a talk with Finnish journalists on Friday, Elop said that it has become "convinced" that it can hit "a very low price point" and do it "very quickly," a strategy that will be key to converting significant swaths of Symbian market share into Windows Phone market share without losing it to other manufacturers or platforms. Of course, something tells us the leaked design concept (pictured right) doesn't represent the types of hardware Nokia has in mind for those low price points -- but no single device or market segment is going to take Espoo to the promised land here.

What is wrong with ie9 again? Aside from the UI, I mean. That's clearly a step back.
 
Windows phones are already super cheap at both carriers and places like Ebay. Price is not the limiting factor imo.

Also, the biggest problem with IE9 at this point probably has to do with the user agent not being flagged correctly by most sites. I think if we consistently got the iOS version of sites I'd be ok, and the html5 video is a bit wonky still, sometimes it doesn't work when it should. I'm coming around to it, I thought it was a huge disappointment when I first picked it up, but more and more I'm thinking it's a problem with sites giving us the wrong version when they see the UA string.

It doesn't render pages 'properly' the way mobile webkit browsers do.

Windows phones aren't directly available for prepaid at carriers. That's a significant limiting factor.

I don't know what exactly is the cause of the web browser problem is but at this point I don't care why it's that way. Just get it fixed asap, by hook or by crook. It's especially annoying because Microsoft won't let third party developers like Mozilla and Opera provide the platform with real alternative browsers.

I agree. It took Apple ages to finally allow other browsers on their devices and I don't get why Microsoft isn't learning from them. Even if they'd allow it, without an NDK, Mozilla or Opera can't even start to port their browsers over.
 
Most mobile sites just render horribly, and I can't think of any other reason than UA string. Espn, Engadget, and some others just render some weird version of their page. The Neogaf app is mostly fine. When a site loads the iOS version, it looks fine. If they load the desktop version, it looks fine as well (though obviously not optimized for touch). But its frustrating when they load a weird version that reminds me of how sites loaded when I had a non-smartphone, or they don't wrap text correctly.
 
Stopped beating around the bush and just got me a proper WP7 phone, the Omnia7. For it's price (200 euros) I can't believe what the exterior brings. full metal cover, flash camera (finally) and a great looking phone to boot (compared to the first galaxy which seems ugly in comparison).

Now to get this baby fully naked and explore it's every feature :)

Microsoft:
Something else that might also come in future is the ability to build alternative browsers. "You won't see native code Opera or Firefox at launch," Watson confirmed to us, but he did hold out some hope.

It's the best? Damn, it's the cheapest I could find so I assumed it was lower end

Pretty great the best WP7 phone can be found for that price, shame Microsoft isn't selling more of them :/

At launch it was at least. The Focus is the NA equivalent, but the Omnia has a sexier design.

All of this is IMO of course.

Ah I see. It's pretty much the same as Android where it comes down to preferences with most phones being the same. I do agree the NA one is less sleek (but probably fits in your hand nicer)

Yeah, there has to be more transparency on these disappearing apps. It really saps consumer confidence when you can't be sure your app isn't going to disappear or be neutered even after you've paid money for it. How can I feel confident about building up an app library on this ecosystem?

Expecially when the applications are quite expensive- it will drastically lower customer confidence.
 
The Omnia 7 is the best phone I've used in awhile.

Windows Phone 7 is also the best phone OS currently imo. If it had more support it'd be an orgasmic platform. By god did they nail the design aspect of what a phone OS should be like though. I fucking love contact cards, they're so convenient.

Mango goes RTM

Microsoft today announced that Windows Phone team signed off the release to manufacturing (RTM) of Windows Phone Mango . This enables handset and mobile operator partners of Microsoft to optimize Mango for their specific phone and network configurations. So you can expect Windows Phone Mango based devices this fall. Terry Myerson, Corporate Vice President of Windows Phone Engineering blogged on this update just a moment ago.

That explains the launch event of the Fujitsu mango device today/tomorrow in Japan. They're streaming it. I'm not sure if they should've announced it, though. People will get impatient. "OMG, Mango went RTM last month and they still haven't released it!!111". I'll be one of them and I'll be worse than Thurrot. Guaranteed.
 
So those of us on the beta would get a firmware upgrade to the RTM version? That would certainly make waiting for a new device more bearable.

I don't think there will be an update from beta to RTM. Those with an AppHub account will be able to download the Mango RTM, just like they were able to download the beta 2. After rolling back to NoDo, they can install the RTM. That's what the instructions say, when you get the beta from connect, hence the warning to backup your backup of your NoDo backup.
 
heh.. early mango RTM copy.. sounds sweet.

Remember he promised developer devices running mango to a couple of people yesterday as part of the WP7 Challenge.. and he mentioned twitter and linkedin integration.. which are not present in the beta 2 build of mango.

He probably knew that they were close to RTM.. and intended to give them devices with mango RTM that had all of the finalized features.

Mango has still a looong way. OEMs have to include their and the MOs modifications, everything needs to be tested and then certified by Microsoft and we still don't have the Mango RTM dev tools. Just because it's RTM now, it doesn't mean we'll get it anytime soon.

Well, with nodo they had hardware surprises from samsung and delays from carriers..

The first of these issues is why some samsung focus folks just got NoDo this week.

Microsoft's development of Mango is complete.. now it's up to the device makers and then finally carriers to test and sign off on it.
