What's the use case for those of you who want a really small smartphone? The main things I do on my Focus are web browsing, gaming, pictures, video, and podcasts. For most of what I do, a bigger screen is better, so long as its still "pocketable" and doesn't feel awkward or heavy to hold. And 4.3-4.5 still meets those criteria for me. I don't see the appeal of having a smaller phone.

If I want a bigger screen I can hold the device closer to my face. There's nothing I can do if I want to make a phone smaller.

Size and pixel density matter more on a phone or a comp screen verses a TV because of what your trying to do and trying to display. I'm down for a larger screen (one reason at the time I liked the Focus was it was 4" and there weren't alot of 4 .3" phones like now). 4.3" is as big as I would go though, but I need the resolution bump because of the comp like tasks you end up doing on a phone. TVs aren't really text machines so it's just not as big of a deal.

Today's the day I pick up a Samsung Omnia 7 waka waka waka.

I live in Australia so I'm too impatient to wait for those sexy Mango Phones. The Omnia 7 will probably hold up fine for now.

Are you getting it through Optus?

Too bad you can't make your fingers smaller, eh?

Good to know about it going gold. I'm almost certainly losing my Blackberry in 6 weeks and there's no way in hell I'm going back to my iPhone 3G. New Mango phones asap please :(

Microsoft is saying all current WP7 devices will be able to recieve the Mango update. Also, it's dead simple to put the developer beta on it. Just Google how to do it.

Also, apparently Dell's selling the Venue Pro's for 99 cents for 8GB, $49 for 16GB and $99 for 32GB on contract on their website for Tmobile and AT&T (and also an unlocked 16GB version for $300 if you're into that).

Never used one, but it certainly looks sexy and has a portrait keyboard if you need that.

Yeah but if I can have new hardware I want new! I really wanted the Dell Venue Pro but their lateness in getting out fixes to issues makes me wary. I mean, Rogers was supposed to release it about 4 months ago but didn't probably because of how bad Dell screwed it up.

Bought one last week for $300 unlocked. Put Mango on it. I have to say it is an awesome OS. I'll be passing this on to my dad after a few weeks (I am just testing it to make sure it is working ok), but my next phone will most probably be a WP7.

Has there been any news in regards to using Microsoft Points with the WP7 App Marketplace? My dad is not happy at all with me being forced to use his credit card to buy apps, which is ridiculous. He actually found it hard to believe me when I told him you could use MS points to buy music/videos and Xbox games, but not WP7 apps.

What issues were the Venue Pros having and are they all fixed? Seriously considering getting one at 300 unlocked.

http://techie-buzz.com/microsoft/microsoft-brings-in-app-purchases-with-microsoft-points-to-wp7.html

That's the last thing I read anything about it which is even more ridiculous, buy in-game dlc with points and not the game itself.

Bastards.

4.3 Super AMOLED Plus. So yeah, it'll be awesome.

The SUV of phones and probably gets about the same mileage.

I'm currently rocking a 3.6 inch screen but I've been wanting to move up to 4.0. I can't imagine a 4.3" though. That might be a bit much for me. Or maybe it's like my TV. Once I moved up to a 60" screen I can never go back to something smaller.

Samsung puts decent batteries into their phones. Its HTC you have to worry about, they make huge phones with tiny batteries.

And yes, once you go big, you probably won't go back. It feels cramped when I use an iPhone 4.

When I made that list of (un)announced mango devices, I somehow forgot the biggest monster out there.

HTC Eternity:

4.7".

I'm happy with my LG. Despite the 3.8" screen, it's one of the bigger Windows Phones and I love the weight.

The stupidly high minimum screen brightness on the Omnia 7 is really starting to bug me. Makes it almost impossible to use in a dark room:

Omnia 7 on left, iPhone 3GS on right - both on lowest brightness

How are things like this overlooked? Is it an issue with the OS? Problems like this (along with the volume level) just make it seem like there is sheer lack of coordination, whether it be in Samsung, Microsoft, or both.

EDIT: Apparently this is an issue with many Super AMOLED screens. Unlike Android, though, there's no way to decrease it below the default settings in WP7.

Anyone know if it's possible to register the HD2 as a dev phone?

How can you do it below regular settings on Android? My Galaxy S has kind of the same problem (although it's not impossible to view or something, just annoying)

I had similar issues with the Samsung Focus, at time during the night, when trying to use the phone, I feel it is too bright even though it is on the lowest brightness level.

I had an iPhone 3G prior to this and never experienced an issue as such. Hopefully they look into it for the next generation of the devices.

Is that to scale? The Eternity is gigantic!

Did anyone else notice that installing Mango frees up ~650MB of space?

Also, wireless sync is amazing (not talking about Mango, just in general).

EDIT: I've got another problem with the Omnia 7 (surprise surprise). Inexplicably, plugging in headphones causes the speaker volume to be boosted substantially after the headphones are unplugged, with no change in the actual software volume level. I'm not sure whether this is a software problem or what (it certainly wasn't fixed in Mango, at least). Rebooting the phone is the only way I've been able to fix it (ie, reduce the volume to what it was originally).

I've heard of people complaining about the loudness and lack of volume variation in the Omnia, but I'm not sure if this is linked to that somehow.

If someone can test this out it would be great, if only so I can get my phone replaced if it's specific to my device. Just reboot your phone, and observe the loudness of the lock/unlock sounds before and after headphones are inserted and removed.

4g isn't until Apollo, right? I can't believe MS skipped on that this year, but I guess Apple may do the same as well. I'm not worried about 4G coverage now, but I'm pretty sure it'll be a big deal within the 2 year span of my contract.

We might get one from HTC, the Prime. Check the last page for all announced and rumored devices.
I see it now. It looks shitty. I have developed a severe aversion to small screens, and there's no good reason for them to get back to sub-4 inch screens surrounded by a huge circa-2001 bezel.

I hope that isn't the case. You won't have a competitive phone on Verizon or Sprint without LTE/Wimax.

yup, it's even gonna look bigger thanks to all that bezel. i hate the edge to edge screen on my hd7 for gaming purposes but damn is it a sexy beast.

so apple is said to be ramping up for an early to mid september iphone 5 release.

how do you guys think microsoft should respond? get the second gen mango phones out to stores before iphone 5? or not respond at all?

I think Microsoft should ignore the rumor that apple is ramping up to release the iPhone 5 and finish Mango in a timely fashion and release as planned.

Rushing won't win them any customers and it could hurt the quality of the software.

How are they supposed to respond? They have a schedule, they'll stick to it. Mango is going RC sometime next month, finishing the the RTM build probably a month later. Then there's carrier testing for new and old phones. God I hope this won't be another update drama.

basically what the other guys said, MS isn't in a position to "respond" to an iphone launch, its probably better to be about a month after it. Get mango right and get it out the door when its done. I'd probably stay away from the launch window of the iphone. At the very least they could do a full mango OS reveal around the launch of the iphone

Because they don't control the hardware, its more difficult for them to react quickly. Apple can launch when they feel like. If MS wants to push the launch for September, they have to RTM Mango a lot quicker to give time for all the tinkering and certification that has to happen on the OEM side. Personally, I'd rather them not rush it. This is their most important software release, and possibly the platform's last chance. A late September launch isn't unlikely, but Apple will probably get their phone out there before MS does. And I also think that they should stagger the releases anyway. Get an HTC and LG phone in late September, drop the Samsung and the Asus in October, Get the Sea Ray and another HTC phone in November, etc.

Is the beta Zune software required to continue syncing to a Mango device or is it just needed to install Mango itself? I'd like to downgrade so I can use Zuse again for Last.FM.

i think mango is further along than microsoft has everyone believing.

I'd love to have the latest build. The one we have needs a good bit of polish, even if it does run really well for a beta. A lot of little quirks in there still.

s the beta Zune software required to continue syncing to a Mango device

You need it for sync.

I'm sure I could Google it so I don't need the link but suffice to say, Gaffers have done it and have it working well?

Where have you been? That's all we talked about for like 10 pages straight a few weeks ago, lol.

I'm still not getting an update notice for my Omnia for that update that was mentioned last week

I'm currently running 7392. Is that the latest version?

Yes, 7392 is the latest build. The updates that are coming now are just firmware updates, not OS updates and not everyone will need a firmware update.

ahhh, ok. thanks for the info.

I just realized I'm running 7390 not 7392. I'm afraid this may have to do with my Walshing my phone for NoDo. Anyone else with a Walshed Focus have this problem?

If it can't be rectified I guess I have no choice but to look into getting Mango on my phone.

Does anyone know why on earth WP7 will not allow you to enter wifi addresses by hand? Why does it have to be visible for it to connect to the access point?

So annoying as my work wifi is hidden and I would love to stream off of it since I have the log in info.
