What do you guys think about this dude's reasoning?

What Windows Phone Needs to do to Survive

In essence he throws the following suggestions out:

Promote the damn thing.
Give the damn things away.
Get your services in order.
Get your phones in order.
Unveil those new phones like a champ. Get people excited about Windows Phone! (and to add to this myself, release your phones right before your competitors for Van's sake)

It seems the immediate need for the platform, or rather the largest hurdle to jump now, is perception. Feature wise, I'd say there is very little of the LARGE features that are missing. Even apps when you slice it for most users, most are accounted for. So they're just dealing with the perception of a platform that is in last place, that's not selling well, that doesn't have as many apps, that's less powerful that the latest phones. To overcome those things, they better have their A game gearing up for some laser pointed promotions that detail how those negative perceptions are overcome, or are irrelevant. They need to get the phones into people's hands, using all the leverage they have. The guy's idea of giving away phones with Windows? Great idea. Do the student thing like they've done with XBOXs. I've sat and watched them muck up how to handle building hype, and promote their product with the Zune since the beginning. Zune was never meant to be a market leading device, but Windows Phone is clearly Zune's ultimate end game. They can't handle the promotion of Windows Phone like they did the Zune. Seriously, mimic Apple's methodology of building hype, and unveiling a product, and promoting the shit out of it. It works. And with how solid the OS is, on most any phone, once you change people's perception and get them in more hands, I think the snowball will roll enough to carve out a nice chuck of the marketplace.

Thoughts?

I feel like the lack of support for native code and OpenGL is killing the games market at the moment. No one wants to port their games to Windows Phone if it means they have to rewrite most of their code.

Just been reading through this

Tons of Mango issues being reported. Did some get a bad Mango?

Getting a few of these

  • GPS not being able to lock
  • Keyboard disappearing
  • Tiles not updating

My battery seems to be updating fine though on my Optimus 7 though. Hopefully MS or LG pushes an update soon enough to fix these gripes.
I've really had absolutely none of those issues at all on my Omnia 7. Am I just in the minority here?

edit: Judging from the comments, the Omnia 7 isn't having any of the issues mentioned.

*pats Samsung on the back*

My Omnia 7 has had the disappearing keyboard rather often, I just have to press Back and then tap the text again. Switching between keyboards (I have five now, used to have four) seems slower than pre-Mango. The fifth keyboard is the Japanese 12-key.

My Omnia has crashed once since Mango, not a dealbreaker obviously.

My biggest gripe is how fs you have WiFi enabled, and you turn it off, 3G doesn't work until you reset the phone. The icon will be there, no 'no connection' messages will pop up, but nothing will load. Going in and out of Airplane mode will sometimes fix this, but restarting is often the only solution.

It sucks.

Was creating a custom ringtone there now for myself on my phone and realised that there is no option for custom alert tones yet, hopefully that'll come too.

Also, Bing Audio, does it actually work for anyone?

Can't recognise a single song for me, whereas Shazam is almost flawless in comparison.

Bing audio works great for me. even found song playing in the background of a movie, something shazam couldn't do.

Mine must be broken then, sits and does nothing and after whatever the timeout period is says it cannot identify the song.

Mine works almost flawlessly.... by far the fastest and most accurate audio recognition app/service I have tried.

Also saw this today (and didnt see it posted here yet).... finally some real console/phone integration is coming from xbox/wp7..... http://wmpoweruser.com/hooray-wp7-h...ll-offer-real-time-maps-for-xbox-360-players/

They really need to start doing this kind of thing for ALL their ms developed games....

It might be US-only.

It's not. Works fine for me here in Germany. :)

Has anyone successfully downloaded a Podcast via the phone? I've subscribed to a few but all of them are stuck ('pending') and none of the downloads have even started?

And now that I start bitching about it Bing Audio not working it's started to work, although it's taking around 10 seconds to get songs.

Still it's an improvement at least, I'll bitch some more and maybe like GPS (which still has it's moments) and Xbox Live it might work properly.

Pretty sweet.

Like you said, hopefully it's expanded.

Bing Audio worked fine for me and recognized Great Big Sea so it even has Canadian music on it. I had written some notes on what I tried to get it to identify and I think the success rate was about 90% from what I played, about the same as Shazam.

Ringtone lovers, try this new app:

Already got my Guile theme covered and oh, the preview sound is usually low so don't worry, it sounds fine when you download ringtones.

Where does it download the ringtones to? I downloaded a classical one but it's not showing up anywhere and the app has a nasty habit of opening IE and loading a rather annoying L'oreal ad.

Think I'll uninstall it, I don't trust apps that automatically open IE.

Wonder if there's an issue with your mic then? The service itself is cloud based ... all the phone is doing is streaming the audio to the server

When I try it with Shazam it's flawless though.

Different algorithm, etc.

The point is no one else seems to be having your issue ... and since it's cloud-based, the likely failure is on the mic end.

I'll just stick it down to a random bug and hopefully like the others it'll cure itself. Earlier it wasn't working at all so it's at got a bit better.

Settings --> ringtones.

Never had that ad stuff happen to me though.

Yeah, that's where I figured it would be but it wasn't. I'll give it another try, maybe I messed up and accidentally hit the wrong ad when I shouldn't have or stopped the download.

Thanks for the tip though, it's a great app...I just hope I can get it working properly.

Ever since Mango, app updates don't automatically show in the marketplace for me. I have to manually go into the App's page, back out, and go back in for the update to show.

What gives?

I think the notification is just slow.

Next time, try to wait a bit more instead of forcing it.

And you are welcome, SeanR.

October 26.

Don't expect too much.
Reasoning?

Don't they have at least 3 phones in the works? And it's what both MS and Nokia are banking on.

If the only thing they show is that N6 or whatever clone, I'll be speechless.

Why shouldn't we expect much from the Nokia conference?

Isn't this what MS invested in?
Because 2012 is the year of Nokia and Microsoft. This year is just a teaser. They won't even be able to ship the phone in volumes this year.

One device for 2011, that's what they said, iirc. Phones for the US are still questionable.

e:
"However, according to Reuters, Elop hinted that the company will release Windows Phone "products" in the fourth quarter, an indication that there may be more than one device coming."

I still doubt the mass availability for more than one phone this quarter.

I like how HTC can put out a million phones for multiple platforms while Nokia takes a year to have their entire company focus on refitting an existing phone for one platform.

but..but...different internals!!!! Lol, this wait for mango phones has gone from pathetic to farcical. HTC launched the Titan in EU where nobody even cares about it. We don't have anyone in this thread with a Titan, whereas if this thing had been launched on AT&T already, I guarantee you we'd have some Titan owners in this thread.
